BRONX, NEW YORK, December 11- Former New York City detective Kevin Spellman was convicted in the manslaughter death of Drane Nikac, 66, who was mowed down as she collected cans along Kingsbridge Avenue, back on Oct. 30, 2009.

At the end of nearly a week of deliberations, the jury convicted Spellman, who was only surrounded by a fraction of the supporters who showed up for his arraignment, when charges were first filed.

But the half dozen off-duty cops continued to block photographers as they attempted to get photos of Spellman and his unidentified girlfriend as they exited the courtroom.

Spellman, a 22-year veteran of the force who has since retired from the NYPD, was acquitted of the more serious charge of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide

Spellman was allowed to return home for the holiday's, as the judge continued his $100,000 bond, but faces 15-year's in prison when he is sentenced on February 15.
