A double dip loss for #Yankees puts postseason in jeopardy?

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- The two home runs and seven runs batted in from Brett Gardner were overshadowed Saturday in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. And the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of a Yankee pitching staff that hit their lowest point, and more importantly the two losses to the potent hitting Blue Jays showed that the Yankees are in dangerous territory.

And with another game Sunday afternoon, all of a sudden the Yankees realize they need to win that one against the Blue Jays. Why?  A loss with 21 games to play and their chances of catching the Jays diminish with a 5-½ game deficit and that will make it much more difficult.

Then there are the surging Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins who all of a sudden pose a threat in the AL wild card postseason picture, and from the way this pitching staff has performed, though there still is still time for adjustments, the danger does exist that a postseason that looked secure is in definitely in peril.

So the question is how could the Yankees, who are also not slugging the ball with that proficiency of a month ago, turn the corner from seeming to be secure to the unsecure? And with three straight losses to the first place Jays, are the Yankees in the same class with a team that continues to slug the ball with an otherwise mediocre pitching staff?

“We need to right this,” Manager Joe Girardi said after a long day of baseball. “This time of year we are fighting. We have to reach down.” But after a first game that started after 1pm and a day to night that ended about 10:21 pm, there were not many Yankees fans left in the building that have a thought their team will overcome this latest debacle.

It started with Michael Pineda on the mound in Game One, and ended with Ivan Nova on the mound in the nightcap, a second game that started at night because the Yankees could not finish off the Blue Jays in that first game that went over four hours in 9-5 11-inning loss.

Pineda wasn’t good, and Nova was worse when he could not get out of the first inning by allowing six runs that were all earned. So quickly, Masahiro Tanaka has to be the stopper Sunday afternoon and if the Yankees do get to the postseason, and that now remains in the balance, Tanaka could be the ace and would take the mound in a one-game wild card elimination.

But the Yankees still feel they have that shot to overtake the Blue Jays. Anything is possible with four games remaining between the two teams, but you take a look and now they may be fighting more for wild card survival with Texas and Minnesota within distance, and a review of that uneventful 11th inning in the first game and it is hard to comprehend.

However dissecting that inning, where Bryan Mitchell and Chasen Shreve could not find the strike zone, is something Girardi and the Yankees hope to avoid again down the stretch where every game is significant.

Mitchell, perhaps in a situation not accustomed too, walked two and hit a batter and was lifted after striking out Dioner Navarro on a foul tip. Bases loaded and one out, Shreve gets the call from Girardi and walked pinch hitter Russell Martin on four pitches and Toronto goes ahead.  Then an RBI single, a walk with the bases loaded got another run in, another walk to Jose Bautista and another run scored.

Keeping track was hard to do, and it was also a task for the fans to see an inning of that magnitude and one that that can’t be recalled in all the years of this illustrious New York Yankees history. More so, can the Yankees recover from what has become a nasty five-game losing streak and falling quickly at the wrong time of year?

Girardi said about using Shreve in that situation, instead of Adam Warren who for some reason was not available out of the pen, “Shreve has been more of a strikeout pitcher during the season and that is what I was going for in that situation.” Shreve has an 18.00 ERA in his last three outings.

But it could be a total pitching breakdown. The reliable Dellin Betances gave a fat pitch to Bautista in the eighth inning, his 35th home run, that put Toronto ahead at the time 5-4.

Five straight losses and another one to go Sunday afternoon. Everyone is tired, even the Yankee Stadium security and support staff. And those fans. There was more of a Toronto Blue Jays presence when Game Two got underway, and that could not have made it easier for the Yankees or their hierarchy looking around.

Bautista said after the 10-7 second game and sweep, “It means nothing.”

It may have been worse if Gardner did not hit a late three-run home run in the nightcap. And it may not mean anything until the Blue Jays no longer have a race for the top. But for the Yankees it does mean something, and there is not much time to get things back to normal in order to avoid missing the postseason a third straight year.

“It doesn’t for me,” Gardner said about the first three games going to Toronto and things changing fast. “It could if they win four in a row against us but I don’t plan on that happening.”

Warm Up the Singing Fat Lady:
Tex's Season Ending Injury has Yanks' Season Slipping Away

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- On August 17 in Minnesota, Mark Teixeira fouled a ball off his right leg.

That night, x-rays were negative and it was determined Tex had a bruised right lower leg. He was out the next seven days, but started at first base on August 25 and pinch hit on August 26. On September 4, he was placed on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to August 27, with a right shin bruise.

Teixeira met with the press at Yankee Stadium on September11. Earlier that day an MRI proved that the injury was a fracture and would miss the remainder of the 2015 season.

Teixeira spoke about his immediate reaction when the injury took place, “I felt when I got hit it was really as painful as I’ve felt on the field. It’s been really painful since day one.”

Up until the fracture was found, Teixeira had made an attempt to play, “I have a high tolerance of pain. I was trying to play every day. We were trying to figure out why it wasn’t healing. Today we did find out it was fractured.”

The 35-year-old, first baseman, performed excellently on-the-field this season in the 111 games he played. He belted 31 homers and knocked in 79 runs. He had achieved a team-high on Base percentage (obp) of .357 and a slugging percentage of .548.

Teixeira is being replaced at first by Greg Bird. The rookie is currently batting .241, but has hit five home runs and driven in 17 runs in 24 games. Teixeira praised the youngster, “It’s been great seeing Birdie step up.”

Teixeira described his feelings of missing this year’s post-season and not being with his teammates, “I really can’t put into words how disappointed I am. I really think this team [Yankees] has a chance to win the World Series.”

The absence of Teixeira in the lineup may lessen those chances greatly, especially with how well he played this season. The Yanks were in first place on the day he got injured in August, but were 2 ½ games behind the Blue Jays on the day of his press conference.

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Residents are relieved that members of two rival gangs who battled it out for control of the crack trade in Soundview are now behind bars thanks to the feds and NYPD.

Law enforcement officials announced the unsealing of two indictments charging a total of 17 members and associates of two Bronx-based street gangs, the Taylor Avenue Crew and the Leland Avenue Crew, with various racketeering and narcotics offenses, including two murders of rival gang members.

Twelve of the 17 defendants, James Capers, Tommy Brown, Jesse Irvin, Edwin Moye, Unique Christopher, Dante Rodgers, Irvin Ortiz, Elijah Davila, Ricardo Garcia, Pablo Chevere, Gladys Morals, Kenneth Mercado and Andrea Bell were taken into federal custody.

Four of the defendants, Marquise Rochester. Christian McKnight, Samuel Serrano and Messiah Perry are currently incarcerated in state custody on other charges, and will be presented at a later date.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “Members of the Taylor Avenue and Leland Avenue Crews allegedly wreaked havoc on the community through the sale of crack cocaine and a wave of violence on the streets of the Bronx.  On two occasions, that violence allegedly ended in the murders of rival gang members.”

HSI Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Glenn Sorge said: “Today’s arrests deal a serious blow to two gangs that allegedly used the streets of New York City to sell drugs and commit acts of violence including murder. HSI will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to rid the streets of these dangerous criminal organizations that instill fear in our communities.”

DEA Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt said: “Drug trafficking inevitably leads to further crime and violence, as depicted in the alleged charges against the members of the Leland Avenue and Taylor Avenue Crews. Through a common goal, law enforcement pooled resources to investigate and arrest those who converted their Avenues into their own private battlefields.”

Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said: “These indictments and arrests are the result of the collaborative power of law enforcement to address narcotics sales and street level shootings, crimes which are often committed by just a few individuals but affect a great many more. I would like to thank the NYPD investigators and our federal law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to protect this Bronx community and bring justice to those responsible for this scourge of drugs, death and violence.”

As alleged in the Indictments unsealed in Manhattan federal court:

The Taylor Avenue Crew was a criminal enterprise that operated principally in and around the Bronx from at least 2012 up to and including 2015. One of the Taylor Avenue Crew’s principal objectives was to sell cocaine base, commonly known as “crack cocaine,” primarily in and around Taylor Avenue in the Bronx.  The Taylor Avenue Crew controlled crack cocaine sales within this area by prohibiting and preventing non-members, outsiders, and rival narcotics dealers from distributing crack cocaine in the area controlled by the enterprise.

Members and associates of the Taylor Avenue Crew engaged in acts of violence against the Leland Avenue Crew, a rival gang that sold crack cocaine primarily in and around Leland Avenue, which runs parallel to Taylor Avenue and is located two blocks east. These acts of violence included assaults, attempted murder, and murder, and were committed to protect the Taylor Avenue Crew’s drug territory, to retaliate against members of rival gangs who had encroached on the territory controlled by the Taylor Avenue Crew, and to otherwise promote the standing and reputation of the Taylor Avenue Crew amongst rival gangs.

The violence perpetrated by the Taylor Avenue Crew turned deadly in March 2015. On or about March 3, 2015, Elijah Davila and Allen McQueen, a now deceased member of the Taylor Avenue Crew, murdered Pablo Beard, a member of the Leland Avenue Crew, by shooting Beard in the vicinity of 1512 Leland Avenue in the Bronx.  As alleged in the Ortiz Indictment, Davila committed this murder to maintain and increase his position in the Taylor Avenue Crew.

Counts Two, Three, Six, and Eight charge Davila with conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering activity, murder in aid of racketeering activity, murder in connection with a drug crime, and a related firearms offense in connection with the March 2015 murder of Pablo Beard.

Count Four of the Ortiz Indictment charges Mercado with assault and attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity in connection with the August 2015 shooting of members of the Leland Avenue Crew.

The Leland Avenue Crew was a criminal enterprise that operated principally in and around the Bronx, New York, from at least 2012 up to and including 2015. One of the principal objectives of the Leland Avenue Crew was to sell crack cocaine, primarily in and around Leland Avenue in the Bronx. Members and associates of the Leland Avenue Crew engaged in acts of violence against the Taylor Avenue Crew.  These acts of violence included assaults, attempted murder, and murder intended either to protect the Leland Avenue Crew’s drug territory, retaliate against members of rival gangs who had encroached on the territory controlled by the Leland Avenue Crew, or to otherwise promote the standing and reputation of the Leland Avenue Crew among rival gangs.

The violence perpetrated by the Leland Avenue Crew also turned deadly in July 2015. On or about July 7, 2015, James Capers murdered Allen McQueen, a member of the Taylor Avenue Crew, by shooting McQueen in the vicinity of 1531 Taylor Avenue in the Bronx. As alleged in the Capers Indictment, Capers committed this murder to maintain and increase his position in the Leland Avenue Crew.

Counts Two, Four, and Five charge Capers with murder in aid of racketeering activity, murder in connection with a drug crime, and a related firearms offense, in connection with the July 2015 murder of Allen McQueen.

Workers get more than $30G in fraudulent overtime

By Michael Horowitz

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- A number of Co-op City employees benefited to the tune of $30,000 and more by getting overtime pay they shouldn’t have received, informed sources told The News this week.

The News first heard about the controversy, which triggered the firing of Colette Ragin as the Riverbay Corporation’s Human Resources Director, last Thursday, shortly after her termination.

The News first received word, last week that Ragin had been terminated.

The allegations were checked out Tuesday over the course of three interviews with informed sources who wished to remain unidentified.

In an initial report that The News received, the newspaper was informed that one supervisor collected more than $35,000 in overtime pay that he shouldn’t have gotten.

Ragin was reportedly fired after Co-op City’s new labor attorneys uncovered the alleged improper payments to Riverbay supervisors following an examination of classifications of management’s employees.

Now, the Riverbay supervisors who received overtime pay, over the course of a number of years, have to be concerned that management officials might require them to return the over time pay that they allegedly received improperly.

Federal and state laws allow employers to exempt supervisory employees from overtime pay if they serve in managerial capacities, such as the power to hire and fire other workers.

However, federal and state regulators have, in recent years, targeted companies, such as Walmart, for unjustly categorizing low-pay workers as supervisors to avoid having to pay them overtime for working more than 40 hours in a given week.

As cases in point, workers assigned to supervise specific departments in a Walmart store have been denied overtime pay, according to press reports.

Federal and state laws require that hourly, non-supervisory employees be paid time and a half for work over 40 hours in given weeks.

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Tim Cook unveiled the future of TV at yesterday's Apple event and it looks like it can do a helluva lot of things.

The new Apple TV will still stream movies and shows but now
you can play video games, watch live TV sporting events and use Siri to search for everything from a specific show to info on what you are watching like the cast and production notes.

"We believe the future of television is apps," said Apple's boss Tim Cook.

"The television experience has been virtually standing still while innovation in the mobile space has been racing ahead. Today, we are going to do something about that."

What makes Apple TV different from Netflix is that in addition to content on demand is that it has live tv like sporting events and content like HBO and regular channel shows like Modern Family.

Sports fans will love Apple TV when they pull up a baseball player's stats while watching games. You can even watch 2 games simultaneously on a split screen as opposed to the lame picture in a picture from days gone by.

Following the Apple event the gasps of denial from Netflix investors were as loud as that as zombie lovers who insist "Fear the Walking Dead" doesn't suck.

The calls that say Apple TV won't hurt Netflix were reminiscent of when Blockbuster Video supporters said Netflix won't affect their business right before that chain disappeared.

Apple is not just offering to stream old movies and a handful of original shows. Apple TV fulfills Steve Jobs' dream written, about in the Walter Isaacson bio, to completely reinvent television.

Siri can not only pull up shows but search specific episodes and even vague plot lines and actors. No word if it speaks wife: "Do you know the guy who was in that thing who was dating that actress?" I'd pay a million dollars if Siri can make sense of that.

Latest #Yankees Loss is Hard to Swallow

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- This loss hurt Wednesday night in the Bronx.

It hurt more because the Yankees dropped two of three to Baltimore and they were scoreboard watching because Toronto has suddenly lost two straight games. So the 5-3 loss to the Orioles holds more significance because first place Toronto  comes to town for a big four-game series Thursday night

And those four games, with the Blue Jays in front of the division by a game-and-half, could determine where this race goes or if the Yankees settle for one of two American League wild card spots. The preference of course, a divisional series best three of five over a one-game elimination and go home

Also, the loss is hard to swallow because CC Sabathia returned from another stint on the disabled list and overall did his job. The second baseman, Stephen Drew did not do his job and made a costly error that cost Sabathia and the Yankees. So if the division is lost, this game, and not the loss Tuesday night, will be tougher to swallow.

However, the Yankees will not look at this game as the end as they await the Blue Jays, a team that has suddenly found a way to lose ballgames. Instead, and unless otherwise known, they have to be optimistic because CC Sabathia gave them 4 ⅔ innings on three runs, one which was earned.

The right knee inflammation that was supposed to end his season was not an issue. A brace on the knee enabled Sabathia to have the location  and his velocity was in the low 90’s. The first inning a fastball was clocked twice at 93. If there was any bit of optimism it is hoped that Sabathia can return and provide a few more of those starts and let the Yankees bullpen take it from there.

“The brace held up and I feel confident going out here forward,” Sabathia said. That’s the good news of a loss that the Yankees can quickly forget if they get a few wins, or take the series over the potent hitting Blue Jays.

Said manager Joe Girardi about Sabathia, “After the first couple of hitters he got the ball down in the zone. I thought his breaking ball was sharp tonight. I thought his changeup was good.”

That was good enough for Sabathia to earn another start, and the Yankees do need his arm to help them down the stretch.

They also have a guy in their clubhouse, Drew who has become public enemy number one with Yankees fans. It’s not that Drew can’t overcome his error game, but when the batting average is a few points over .200, it is hard for fans to forgive and errors are costly especially this time of year.

Girardi does have some options and perhaps Drew will sit and work it out, more so because these games with the Blue Jays become the most significant ones of the season in September.

“We gave them the first three runs they got,” Girardi said. “That was the difference.” And the defense of Drew turned out to be the difference, and more than once it has been a case of Drew not making the play the Yankees need that determined a loss instead of a win.

Again, this is not the time of year to make the error that cost a run or two. After Sabathia was lifted with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Drew could not handle a low ball thrown off a grounder that was hit to Chase Headley. The ball went through the legs of Drew and Baltimore scored two runs to tie the score.

Drew heard the boos. And the Yankees could only get four hits off Baltimore pitching and they did not allow a walk. Two of the hits came from Carlos Beltran including  his 15th home run, so Drew may have been a culprit on the field but the Yankees bats also were not helping the cause.

“It’s part of the game and you have to find a way to overcome it,” said Girardi about the errors. But at this time of year, and with the way Sabathia gave the Yankees a boost, errors should not be a part of the game. To his credit, Drew has been able to overcome the adversity of making the error and he faces the music.

But it is tough to swallow, especially this time of year and the magnitude of how important every game is,

“It’s tough for me to swallow,” Drew said. “Yeah it’s frustrating. I should have caught it,” he said about the play. “If I had to do it all over again I think I would try and catch it with one hand.” In the first inning, he also allowed a bouncer from Gerardo Parra bounce off his glove, a sure double play ball that went for a force out. Chris Davis followed with a two-out single to right that dropped in front of Beltran.

But there is no doing it again from this game. All the Yankees can hope is that errors don’t cost them in the next four games. And if they can count on Sabathia to give them five or six good innings, it boosts their chances in this stretch run to a division title, though a tough loss to swallow is always a reminder of a game that could have been won.

And in September as it is in April, these games that are lost by the error or a bad pitch prove to be costly.

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- A former staffer of both Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., and Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., has split from the party and has set her sights on the office of the Bronx Borough President in 2017.
Camella Pickney-Price, 52, a resident of Soundview is the first candidate to announce a run for Borough President as Ruben Diaz, Jr. has not yet announced his plans at another run.
Price enjoyed an 18-year career that began as Deputy Chief of Staff for Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr., before joining Senator Diaz' camp. She would later re-join Diaz, Jr., as Special Assistant to the Borough President.
Price an African-American woman was busy making her pitch to a group of supporters in the neighborhood she grew up, Morris Park, a changing neighborhood, but still a predominantly white, Italian community.
On June 17, Price told the group at "Gowns By Louise" on Morris Park Avenue, "I'm running for Borough President because in this borough a lot of communities are left out. I don't see color, I don't think about color. I think about people, I see what's in their heart."
Price addressed issues felt passionately by Morris Park residents, failing schools and local businesses that can't survive due to soaring rents and tax bills. Price asks the group, "What can we do in this city to lower taxes?" How can we sit down and find a solution to these problems and then move forward."
Before that can happen the Committee For A Progressive Bronx would have to get Price elected and defeat the powerful Bronx Democratic County Committee, who has not yet announced a candidate.
Ed Watkins, the Treasurer for the Committee For A Progressive Bronx said of Price, "She has the ability to turn (things) around and get the job done." Watkins added, "There's a fresh breath of air coming through... we believe Camella is that fresh air."
Price says of her campaign, "It will be a long road, but you know I'm ready for it. If I can run a campaign for the father and the son... and win all those elections with all the people I know and what I do and I want to include everybody."

Illegal Nightclub was Run Out of Home

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Police have released photos of a man and woman wanted in connection with the shooting of two men at an illegal after-hours nightclub in Bedford Park.

Officers from the 52nd Precinct were called to the three-family home at 2836 Valentine Avenue at East 198 Street, at 6 a.m., on Saturday, August 22.

Officials say the victim, identified as Almame Drammeh, 23, of Findlay Avenue, was shot in the abdomen and the back and was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died the following Monday.

Drammeh's 36-year-old friend who remains unidentified, was also wounded and was recovering at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police say the man was being uncooperative with the investigation.

Police have released a second photo of a woman wanted for questioning, as she was seen with the still-unidentified gunman.

One resident of the block explained, "Yes, we knew they had a nightclub in there for about the last two-years. The person that stays there is a very nice man... but he's not allowed to open the club again."

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- The dramatic battle between the Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays for the pennant in the American League East continued on the Labor Day holiday as the players on both teams were not given the day off from work.

The Yankees won their eighth game in the last 10 to rise to season high of 18 games over .500 (77-59) with 26 games remaining in the regular season and to again move to 0.5 games behind the Blue Jays.

Yankee starter Michael Pineda ran into serious difficulty in the second inning as he walked one batter, hit a batter and gave up five hits including a three run homer to Jonathan Schoop on an 0-2 pitch. Other than the four runs the right-hander surrendered in the second, he held the Orioles scoreless in the other five frames he pitched. He settled own to only yield one other hit, a single and retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced.

Yankees skipper Joe Girardi explained his pitcher’s problems by saying, “It was a struggle for him today. He was just a little off. He righted himself.”

The Yankees starter gave much credit to his catcher, John Ryan Murphy, “He helped me a lot. I tried to make adjustments.”

Murphy also helped offensively with a two-run homer in the fifth with two out. Pineda remarked, “I was very happy for him and for the team."

Two other home runs were crucial to the victory. Alex Rodriguez led off the fifth with his 29th home run of the season. It was his third in the first four games of the current homestandGirardi believed the three days off for A-Rod during the last road trip in Atlanta was responsible for his improvement.

The third Yankees home run, a three-run blast by rookie Greg Bird in the seventh made the difference in the result as the Yanks won, 8-6. Bird explained the at bat scenario, “I was looking for a fastball. I looked at a video when he [Brian Matusz] came in. It’s easier to go from a fastball to an off-speed.” Bird homered off a slider.

Girardi spoke highly of the rookie, “He’s come up with some really big hits for us. We thought he could make an impact. That’s why we called him up. He doesn’t get nervous. He fit right in.”

The Toronto loss allowed the Yankees to gain a game on Labor Day. Girardi commented, “It’s nice to see them lose, but we have to take care of things ourselves.”
