Bird is another reason Yankees are flying in the Bronx

Bird is another reason Yankees are flying in the Bronx

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- Greg Bird got hold of a 0-1 pitch off Minnesota Twins righthander Ervin Santana in the fourth inning Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. That ball went to the second deck in right field and scored Carlos Beltran who had singled. That was the beginning of more to come for the Yankee rookie who is in the lineup because Mark Teixeira is day-to-day with a bruised right shin.

And after a second two-run homer in the sixth inning off a Santana changeup that sailed into the Yankees bullpen, that also drove in Beltran, the word was all about Bird in the Bronx. He is next in line to succeed Teixeira at first base and the prospect is providing a preview of what may be ahead.

The two home run balls were all the Yankees needed in a 4-3 win over the Twins, their eighth series sweep of the season. Nathan Eovaldi won his eighth straight game on the mound with seven innings of four-hit ball and Dellin Betances converted his eighth save retiring all three in the ninth.

So the Yankees, who brought up Bird form Triple-A Scranton six days ago, have unveiled one of four prospects that are supposed to be so much like a previous “core four” in the Bronx of Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitet and Mariano Rivera.

Eovaldi retired the first 16 Twins and continues to be an elite starter for manager Joe Girardi. But it was Bird who took the spotlight and for now, or at least until Teixeira is ready to return, Yankee Stadium fits him well.

“Anything I can do to help...nothing more, nothing less,” Bird said when asked about his day in the Bronx. “End of the day, just trying to do my job here. It’s a team effort.”

The left handed bat is one aspect of his game. Bird also brings a good game to the field and can also handle the outfield if needed, however first base is where the Yankees see him as they go forward when the Teixeira era ends in the Bronx.

With the first two home runs of his career, Bird the 22-year old fifth round draft pick from Aurora Colorado, became the first Yankee hitter with two go ahead home runs in the same game since Robinson Cano did that on August 27, 2012 against Toronto. And he is the first Yankee to hit his first career home runs in the same game since Jesus Montero back in September of 2011.

Girardi was raving about the outing Eovaldi (13-2) had on the mound, but Bird was the word and so were the comparisons.

“This is a big comparison and I’m not saying that is what my expectation is, but Miguel Cabrera had a slow clock and really had an understanding of what he wanted to do,” said Girardi who is beginning to witness first hand what Bird brings to the table. And there is also that understanding now, and a reason GM Brian Cashman said that Bird was one of the untouchable prospects as the Yankees move forward.

Girardi added, “And I think Greg Bird has an understanding of who he is and what he wants to do.” Girardi managed Cabrera with the then Florida Marlins in 2006, a two-time American League MVP with the Detroit Tigers and a ten-time all-star.

Girardi also mentioned that Bird does not go after pitches out of the zone. “He knows what he has to do and did very well today,” he said. As for Bird, he expects to be a part of this Yankees winning formula for a long time. There is that feeling the Yankees will keep him around the next few weeks before rosters expand on September 1st.

“Get ready for tomorrow,”Bird commented. “My parents are still in town, so that’ll be fun. But we’ve got another game tomorrow and I think that’s what everyone’s focused on now.”

Spoken like a veteran in the dog days of August and determined that Bird is the Word in the Bronx.

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS) - The Yanks swept a three-game series over the Twins that began the current 10-game home stand with a 4‐3 victory on Wednesday’s matinee. The win was their 6th in the last seven contests and allowed them to retain the top spot in the standings of the American League East.

The game had several similarities to the Yanks win the evening before Wednesday’s win. Starting pitching Nathan Eovaldi retired the first 16 batters he faced. His bid for a no hitter was ended by a single of Chris Hermann with one out in the sixth inning.

Eovaldi departed after yielding three runs in the seventh, but he threw 120 pitches, his season high. Eovaldi did not allow a batter to reach base in any inning except the sixth, when he yielded three runs and four hits.

In the previous game, CC Sabathia retired the first 13 Twins and left the game in the seventh after giving up three runs.

The Yankees, as on Tuesday with A‐Rod’s grand slam homer, took the lead with a two run homer by rookie Greg Bird, his first week with the club. Bird followed a walk to veteran Carlos Beltran in the sixth with the home run to center that scored both.
Two innings earlier, Bird followed Beltran, who singled, with a two run homer, his first in the majors. After the game, Bird credited Beltran, “Hats off to him for a great at bat in front of me.” Bird was the first Yankee to have a two home run game as a rookie since Jesus Montero on September 5, 2012.

The 22-year-old rookie, who came up to the Yankees seven days earlier, has been enjoying the week with his parents who are in New York to see his first games in the majors. He remarked that his parents have always supported him and told him, “Just have fun and play baseball.”

His expressed his feelings about the week to a large group of reporters after Wednesday’s game, “It’s an honor to put on this uniform every day and play in front of these fans.” He said the curtain call he received “was my first ever.”

Girardi spoke with respect of the young man, “He was a huge part of our offense. He had a tremendous afternoon. He’s able to slow the game down.” Bird said his goal as a Yankee is, “I’m just trying to help this team win, nothing more and nothing less.”

Yankees Bring HOPE to those in Need

By Howard Goldin
BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- For the seventh consecutive year, Yankee Stadium and other sites in the New York metropolitan area will be the location for events connected with HOPE Week (Helping Others Persevere & Excel). The thoughtful idea was originally promulgated by Jason Zilo, Executive Director of Communications and Media Relations of the New York Yankees.
The events are designed to encourage and honor those coping with difficulties in their lives and those individuals and organizations that exist to help others. There is also an intention to encourage those who see and read about these stories to become involved in volunteering to help others in need.
Each day of the special week focuses on a separate inspiring story. Monday, August 17, was the first day of this year’s HOPE Week. Chris Singleton, a 19-year-old student and member of the baseball team at Charleston Southern University, was surprised by the appearance of three Yankees heroes, Dellin Betances, Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez, at the TODAYshow early that morning.
Singleton’s mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, was one of nine victims who were murdered in a hate crime in Charleston this year while attending a church service. The 45 year old was a minister at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church and a speech pathologist and girl’s track coach at Goose Creek High School. Her son’s reaction, like the family members of some of the other victims, was uplifting. He commented, “Love is stronger than hate. She loved everyone. We already forgive him [the alleged murderer] for what he’s done.”
Singleton was involved in a full day of events. He was given a private tour of the One World Observatory and a luncheon with Yankees Stephen Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, Willie Randolph, Masahiro Tanaka, Justin Wilson, and Chis Young.
In the evening at Yankee Stadium, the college baseball player participated in batting practice with the Yankees. Later, he and his younger brother, Caleb-12, and sister, Camryn-15, came to home plate with bench coach Rob Thomson to give to the umpires and the Twins’ manager and they threw out the ceremonial first pitches and also met with the media at a press conference at the Stadium.
He commented, “I don’t know if I’m a role model, but I feel good when somebody says that to me.” After being congratulated by superstars Joe Mauer and Torii Hunter of the Twins, the teenager remarked, “Honestly, I was in shock at first, but now it feels like a dream.”
Each year since 2010, the Yankees have been awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award by the President’s Council Service and civic Participation in cooperation with the Corporation for National and Community Service “in recognition and appreciation of commitment to strengthening the nation and for making a difference through volunteer service.”

Dems Want Anybody but Hillary,
Trump Soars- Polls say

Lawyers salivate
Warning bells should be sounding in the Clinton camp and among Republican leadership as Hillary falls in the polls and Trump continues to rise.
A CNN poll shows that registered Democrats want anyone but Hillary for President.
For the first time Clinton has dropped below 50% among Democrats. And only 47% said they would choose Hillary if they had an alternative candidate like Socialist Candidate Bernie Sanders.
Sanders is rapidly closing the gap with Clinton. In July, the Vermont senator was behind Clinton by 37%. Now he is only down 19%.
Among registered voters (not just Dems) Hillary's favorability is only at 42%. Some 55% view her unfavorably.
What is even more concerning is that the poll was taken before the latest revelations around Clinton's emails. This week as Hillary defended herself to reporters saying that most of her emails were personal the FBI disputes the claim. According to published reports the FBI claims as many 300 emails Clinton sent could be considered Classified.
At the same time Donald Trump's lead continues to grow over the Republican field including GOP officials' candidate Jeb Bush

BP Blasts NYCHA Plan to Build on Green Spaces

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX BEWS)- Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is raising serious concerns over a proposal by the New York City Housing Authority to develop open green spaces between existing buildings at city housing projects.

“The tenants of NYCHA should not be treated like second-class citizens,” said Borough President Diaz. “Despite the assertions of NYCHA Chair Shola Olatoye, these green spaces play a critical role in the everyday life of building tenants, especially children, and should be preserved. NYCHA’s housing stock is already poorly maintained. Taking away light, air and green space from these tenants—taking away safe spaces where children play—would be an outrage.”

Borough President Diaz also criticized Ms. Olatoye for her comments in an interview with Politico New York, where she described the green spaces at NYCHA developments as “strewn with trash” and “gated off,” and therefore any discussion of their use by tenants amounts to “nostalgia.”

“Ms. Olatoye should not be so cavalier about her agency’s responsibility to manage these spaces,” said Borough President Diaz. “If the space is strewn with trash, pick up the garbage. If they are gated off, then open the gates. Her admission that NYCHA cannot maintain space for its tenants should not be an excuse to develop inappropriate housing projects, but should instead spark a discussion about ways to provide additional resources to the hardworking men and women employed by the housing authority.”

Borough President Diaz added that he is not opposed to all development on NYCHA property, and has in fact supported some projects in the past. But to develop on cherished green space does a tremendous disservice to the over 400,000 city residents who call these developments home.

“I understand the need to build more affordable housing,” said Borough President Diaz. “But this development should not be at the expense of the quality of life of NYCHA tenants.”

Mural Immortalizes Supreme Sotomayor

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Local elected officials, members of the community and a group of local graffiti artists paid homage to Sonia Sotomayor. The U.S. Supreme Court Justice returned to the Soundview community where she grew up for the unveiling of a new mural dedicated to those from the area who have found success in their respective fields.

The mural, unveiled at the corner of Morrison Avenue and Westchester Avenue on Sunday, August 16, features Justice Sotomayor as well as rap artists KRS One and Afrika Bambaataa.

The colorful mural across the street from the new Morrison Plaza, also features a dee-jay with a turntable and the elevated Number 6 Train.

Community Board 9 District Manager William Rivera applied for the $2,200 beautification grant provided by the National Association of Realtors after local graffiti artists Tats Cru of Hunts Point and the FX Crew, who got their start on Webster Avenue, offered to paint the inspiring mural for free.

Rivera estimates the value of the donated work at $20,000 and the $2,200 grant covered the cost of the paint supplies and the scaffold needed to paint the mural, which took two days to complete.

In introducing Sotomayor, Congressman Jose Serrano stated, "You became a symbol to everything we aspired to do. You became a symbol for everything we wanted to be. You became a symbol for everything we could be."

Visibly humbled by the larger than life mural, Sotomayor responded, "Never in my life did I imagine that this community would honor me with having a mural, this is what a community board should be, so I'm very grateful."

#Yankees Remain in First Place after 10 Inning Marathon Win over Twins

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- As the MLB regular season nears its conclusion, every game the Yankees play is crucial to their qualifying for the playoffs. The 10 inning, that lasted more than four hours, 8-7, victory over the Twins on Monday night kept the Yanks in first place in the American League East by one game over the Blue Jays. It was only the third win for the Yanks in 10 extra-inning contests this year.

Greg Bird, whose major league debut took place four days before Monday’s contest, led off the bottom of the 10th with a double to right. Catcher Brian McCann was deprived of his 6th RBI of the game as Brid had to hold up at third. Carlos Beltran, who hit a two-run homer in the seventh to tie the score at 7, was intentionally walked. Third sacker Chase Headley grounded to former Yankee Eduardo Nuñez, who had difficulty fielding the ball and then threw it to first allowing Bird to successfully cross the plate for the walk-off win. Bird was obviously, excited to score the winni9ng run in his first game in the Bronx, “It’s a special feeling. I’m not trying to do anything special. I’m just trying to help this team win. It was a team effort today.”

McCann, the veteran catcher, now in his 10th season in the big leagues, performed outstandingly at bat and behind the plate. He smacked a two-out, three run home run in the first. The three tallies gave the yanks a total of 99 runs scored in the first frame this year, more than any team in any inning in the majors this season.

In the third, also with two out, McCann drove in two with a single.

The experienced backstop threw out three of the five Twins’ runners that tried to steal bases. He is only the third catcher in the past 75 years who kno0cked in five runs and threw out three runners in a single game. Despite his individual achievements in the contest, he gave credit to his teammates, “I can’t say enough for those 12-13 guys [pitching staff]. It was  team win.”

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS) - A young woman dramatically fought for her life as her berserk mother attempted to throw her out of a second-floor window, on a quiet tree-lined street in Van Nest.

Stunned neighbors quickly called police at just before 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, when the unidentified victim was observed dangling from the second floor window of the home, located at 872 Kinsella Street, near Bronxdale Avenue.

One witnesses reported, "She was hanging from the window and fighting the mother, and clawing her way back in."

"It was either call paramedics," the witness continued, or "we'd have to call the medical examiner."

The young woman, believed to be 19 years old, managed to get back into the home. She was transported to Jacobi Hospital for evaluation. The mother was also taken away by EMS, in handcuffs, and was expected to undergo psychological evaluation.

How Elderly Can Stay Safe During Heat Wave

How Elderly Can Stay Safe During Heat Wave

By Dr. Amy Ehrlich, associate chief, Division of Geriatrics, Montefiore Medical Center

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Mrs. K. came to see me in the Geriatrics Ambulatory Practice at Montefiore on the third day of a major heat wave.

She was scheduled for a routine follow-up visit for her multiple medical problems. Mrs. K is 95 years old and has mild dementia, diabetes, congestive heart failure and mild kidney disease. She takes eight different medications, including a "water pill" or diuretic for her heart disease. Mrs. K was born in South Carolina and moved to New York when she was 20 years old. She has very strong opinions about many things, including what foods she should eat during the summer months and the dangers of air conditioners. She came to my office wearing long underwear underneath a long-sleeved shirt and a jacket. She informed me that the air conditioners were too cold in the office, so she had to come prepared. Luckily, she has a devoted aid who is with her six hours a day. I inquired about her apartment and whether she has an air conditioner for the heat wave. She informed me that she has an air conditioner but absolutely will not use it because it irritates her sinus condition. She told me she uses a fan and that her apartment does not get too warm, despite the 100-degree weather outside. Meanwhile, her aid was vigorously shaking her head, stating the apartment was unbearably hot. Fortunately, I was able to counsel both Mrs. K and her aid about the risks of heat illness, and together we agreed upon a plan that will keep Mrs. K safe. This is not the case for many older adults during heat waves. Every year, vulnerable older adults are hospitalized and even die due to heat-related illnesses.

Who is at risk for heat-related illness and death?

· Adults ages 65 years and older who do not use or have home air conditioning are at increased risk of heat-related illness and death.

· Certain chronic health conditions increase the risk, including dementia or other cognitive problems that impair a person's judgement.

· Older adults with multiple chronic medical problems, including heart and lung disease, diabetes and obesity are also at increased risk.

· Many common medications can impair an older adult's ability to respond to sustained exposure to high temperatures, including "water pills" or diuretics, anticholinergic agents and neuroleptic medications.

· Older adults who live alone, are socially isolated and have limited mobility are at high risk. Additionally, older adults without a strong safety network of formal services or informal support of family and friends are more vulnerable during times of severe weather.

What should older adults do to keep safe during hot weather?

· Use air conditioners or go to places with air conditioning on very hot days. Most communities open cooling centers for use during extreme heat events.

· Fans do not provide adequate cooling during extreme heat. Fans should ideally be used to bring in cool air at night, when the windows are open or when the air conditioner is already on.

· Older adults should drink extra fluids during hot weather.

· Family members, friends and community groups should frequently check on older adults and assist them to keep cool and well hydrated.

· Older adults and or their caregivers should contact their primary care providers if they have questions regarding an older adult during times of extreme heat.

*Names and identifying details of patients have been changed to protect their confidentiality.

Parkchester Murder Not Gang- Related-Mother insists

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- The mother of a Bronx gang member, who was shot dead as he shielded his one year-old child, claims that his death was not 'gang-related.' The mother continues to believe it was not gang related even after NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton publicly stated that it was.

Regina McQueen fumed, "They had gang-related in the paper, but it wasn't gang-related. Even the assistant district attorney was telling me it wasn't gang-related."

Her son Allen McQueen, 21, was taking his daughter Taylor to the Taylor Playground on July 7, when he was hunted down in the street and shot outside the playground gates. Somehow McQueen managed to shield Taylor from the barrage of gunfire.

After McQueen's death police released a surveillance video of the suspect who was observed laughing after firing four-shots at McQueen at point-blank range, before jumping into a nearby get-a-way vehicle.

On July 21, detectives announced the arrest of James Capers, 22, who was charged with murder, manslaughter and weapons possession. The McQuuen family would like to see a charge of child endangerment added to the charges that Capers now faces.

The heartbroken mother recalled how McQueen grew up on Taylor Avenue in the Unionport Section, had attended Jeffery Rappaport High School and enjoyed singing and playing basketball. She added, "He was working on a rap song. It sounds kind of good, too bad he didn't finish it."

Regina McQueen admitted her son was a gang member and believes Capers to be from a rival gang-- but could not offer an explanation or motive for the killing.

One source in West Farms described an all-out gang war, when he stated last month that a De facto war was in effect, adding, "The situation is there are the Bloods and Crips gangs and the Crips are getting bigger and what is happening is that their initiation is to shoot the enemy like the Bloods and the Latin Kings."

The source claimed that this new turf war was taking place in Bedford Park, Kingsbridge, Fordham, Tremont, West Farms and Parkchester, but the claim could not yet be confirmed by law enforcement officials.

Air Quality Warning

Air Quality Warning

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Marc Gerstman and State Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner Howard Zucker, M.D., J.D. today issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the Long Island and New York City Metro regions of New York State for Monday, August 17, 2015.

The pollutant of concern is: Ozone

The advisory will be in effect: 11 a.m. through 11 p.m.

DEC and DOH issue Air Quality Health Advisories when DEC meteorologists predict levels of pollution, either ozone or fine particulate matter are expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100. The AQI was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale, with a higher AQI value indicating a greater health concern.

OZONE

Summer heat can lead to the formation of ground level ozone a major component of photochemical smog. Automobile exhaust and out-of-state emission sources are the primary sources of ground level ozone and are the most serious air pollution problems in the northeast. This surface pollutant should not be confused with the protective layer of ozone in the upper atmosphere.

People, especially young children, those who exercise outdoors, those involved in vigorous outdoor work and those who have respiratory disease (such as asthma) should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when ozone levels are the highest (generally afternoon to early evening). When outdoor levels of ozone are elevated, going indoors will usually reduce your exposure. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing should consider consulting their doctor.

Ozone levels generally decrease at night and can be minimized during daylight hours by curtailment of automobile travel and the use of public transportation where available.

New Yorkers also are urged to take the following energy?saving and pollution-reducing steps:

use mass transit or carpool instead of driving, as automobile emissions account for about 60 percent of pollution in our cities;
conserve fuel and reduce exhaust emissions by combining necessary motor vehicle trips;
turn off all lights and electrical appliances in unoccupied areas;
use fans to circulate air. If air conditioning is necessary, set thermostats at 78 degrees;
close the blinds and shades to limit heat build-up and to preserve cooled air;
limit use of household appliances. If necessary, run the appliances at off-peak (after 7 p.m.) hours. These would include dishwashers, dryers, pool pumps and water heaters;
set refrigerators and freezers at more efficient temperatures;
purchase and install energy efficient lighting and appliances with the Energy Star label; and
reduce or eliminate outdoor burning and attempt to minimize indoor sources of PM 2.5 such as smoking.

A toll free Air Quality Hotline (1-800-535-1345) has been established by DEC to keep New Yorkers informed of the latest Air Quality situation. Further information on ozone and PM 2.5 is available on DEC’s web site at http://www.dec.ny.gov and http://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/air/ozone.htm on the DOH website.

Tips for Surviving Heat Wave

Tips for Surviving Heat Wave

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- With high temperatures and humidity expected to stick with New Yorkers the next few days, Con Edison reminds customers to stay safe, stay comfortable and watch their energy usage. Here are some simple tips.

1. Set your AC to the highest comfortable temperature. Every degree you lower the thermostat drives up your bill by 6 percent.

2. To reduce heat and moisture in your home, run appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when it’s cooler outside.

3. Cook with a microwave, or barbecue.

4. When the AC is running, close doors to keep cool air in and hot air out. Shop owners are reminded not to keep front doors open while running air conditioning inside.  This wastes energy and puts a strain on the grid.

5. Keep shades, blinds and curtains closed. About 40 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows.

6. Use ceiling fans instead of your AC, if possible. Ceiling fans use less energy.

7. Turn off AC units, lights and other appliances when not at home and use a timer or smart technology to turn on your AC before arriving home.

8. Replace old appliances with new energy efficient Energy Star appliances.

Con Edison offers a variety of energy-efficiency programs for this summer. The coolNYC program connects customers with smart technology to control their room air conditioners from their computer or mobile device. Customers whose air conditioners are not Wi-Fi-enabled can buy a smart AC kit or borrow one for free and keep it if they participate in at least three heat events. Haiti Immigration Crisis Comes to the Bronx

Angry Demonstrators Protest Visit by Dominican Republic Foreign Minister

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- A pair of very vocal and infuriated demonstrators protesting the Dominican Republic's new and controversial policy towards migrant workers of Haiti, came to the Bronx to heckle the Dominican Republic's Foreign Minister, who was invited to speak at breakfast hosted by a local group in Morris Park.

Dahoud Andre of Brooklyn and Bronxite Vilcere Romulus stood on the sidewalk outside of Meastro's catering hall on Bronxdale Avenue on August 7, to protest the visit by Andres Navarro Garcia, who spoke at the breakfast hosted by the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization (NYHCO.)

In a brief statement announcing the breakfast, Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., a Reverend and President of the NYHCO, explained, "It is a great opportunity for us Hispanic ministers, evangelists and missionaries to hear directly from the Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic and about the new plan of immigration affecting the Haitian community and other communities that have been established by the administration of President Danilo Medina."

With Haitian flags draped across their shoulders, Andre and Romulus each held up signs, one read, "Boycott Tourism in the Dominican Republic," another demanded, "Full citizenship for Dominicans of Haitian descent," as they chanted slogans about racism to guests as they arrived.

Calling the new policy of the Dominican government, a form of ethnic cleansing, Andre, a host of a local Haitian radio program and a member of the International Campaign to End Apartheid in the Dominican Republic claimed, "It's a very serious issue. It's very sad that you have black politicians in New York who we believe are taking money from the Dominican government to be given this platform to spew lies."

"From it's inception," Andre continued, "The Dominican Republic has sought to distance itself from it's neighbor in Haiti and blackness."

Andres claims the revolt began when the new legislation was passed, legislation that they claim will affect hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from Haiti and the unrest has escalated after several incidents including the revocation of Citizenship of a Haitian-born Dominican who had been practicing law in the Dominican Republic for 30-years, and the February lynching of a Haitian man in Santiago, the Dominican Republic's second largest city.

Pointing out similarities with the current atmosphere in the United States, Andre explained, "It's the same reality that Dominicans are taking rickety boats to Puerto Rico to eventually get to the U.S., you would have a policy where the children of undocumented immigrants would be thrown out, the Dominican community here would rise up against this."

Asked what he would say to the NYHCO, Ardre added, "As Hispanics they understand the reality of undocumented migrants, like Hispanic migrants in this country and the same way that they would like to see undocumented migrants from the Dominican Republic treated in the United States, is the same way we would like them to treat Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic."

Senator Ruben Diaz declined to make a statement on the event or the protest, but his Chief of Staff Ann Noonan stated, "I'm not sure about that... I would just say in regard to the protesters is that everybody has a right to freedom of speech and everyone has a right to do that."

Attempts to reach the Manhattan office of the Consulate of the Dominican Republic were unsuccessful.

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- The first match between DC United and NYC FC appeared to be a contest between two clubs moving in different directions. United had won its last three matches and sits atop the standings of the Eastern Conference of the MLS with 44 points. NYC had lost three of its last four contests and is in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
The result of the match, a 3‐1 victory for NYC was a happy surprise for the 28,262 fans in attendance at Yankee Stadium.

The first goal was scored in the 36th minute by Álvaro Saborio, a Costa Rican international, who had been traded to United by real salt Lake less than one month prior to the match.

NYC coach Jason Kreis was not disappointed by the play of his club during the first half despite not scoring a goal, “In the first half, I thought we played real well, but not well enough to get a goal.”

Tommy McNamara scored the first NYC goal in the 51st minute. After the contest, McNamara assessed his team’s play during the second half, “I think we made very good decisions.”

Late in the match, 80th minute, NYC captain David Villa ran between two defenders, almost fell, but kicked the ball into the net for his 14th goal of the season, his ninth at Yankee Stadium. It proved to be the deciding goal of the match. An additional NYC goal was scored by Kwadwo Poku in the waning minutes of the match. It was Poku’s first goal of the year, but he had previously assisted in seven. He was pleased by the starting assignment and happy to contribute, “When I’m in there, I’m trying to do the best I can to get us the win. I’m ready as always.”

Although the three points gained by NYC did not move them above eighth place in the East, its coach and players hoped and believed it would be the impetus to eventually qualify for the playoff.

Kreis commented, “I hope this starts a new season for us. This could be really, really special for us, a season changer for us, a momentum changer for us.”

Several players expressed similar beliefs about their play on Thursday night. McNamara remarked, “It’s a good kicking point for us. I think the new guys are more settled now. We have a good shot at the playoffs.” The veteran goalie Josh Saunders agreed, “It was huge. We can build on this.”

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- He must have been part of the Thick Blue Line. An obese man claiming to be a cop took off with a Bronx man’s ride.

At around 5:35 p.m. on July 8, a 300+ pound man approached a Morris Heights resident in front of 1703 Jerome Avenue. The 31-year-old had a “For Sale” sign on his 2003 black Mercury Mountaineer. The big guy asked what he wanted for the SUV and wanted to take it for a test drive. The owner was leery but the suspect showed him a shield and told him he was a cop.

When the vehicle’s owner went to get the title, the fat man jumped into the truck and drove off. The SUV has not been recovered.
