BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 6- Detectives are looking for the gunman who opened fire and critically wounded a driver as he sped through the West Farms section in an open convertible.
Officials say the unidentified 27-year-old male victim, a resident of the Bronx, was driving a green Chrysler Sebring convertible with the top down-- when the victim was shot one time in the head.
The victim lost control of the vehicle and the auto jumped the curb, crashing through the construction barrier next to a bodega. The man was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where police say he is fighting for his life.
Unconfirmed reports say a second person was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and was not injured. Police declined to comment on a second person in the vehicle, a possible witness to the shooting.
Police had Daily Avenue shutdown from East 180 Street to Bronx Park South more than two blocks away. Crime scene investigators and detectives were still inspecting the vehicle, that had blood spatter across the deflated air-bag, as childr
en
began to fill Vidalia Park across the street.
Hours after the shooting, one witness recalled, "The guy just came out of nowhere at a high rate of speed. The car jumped the curb and crashed into that wall."
As of July 6, police had made no arrests and added that no description of the gunman was available.
Officials also could not say if the incident was a random attack or if the victim was targeted.
