Taxi Cab Stickup Caught on Tape

Taxi Cab Stickup Caught on Tape
Armed Robber Convicted in Stickup

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 10- District Attorney Robert Johnson announces the conviction of 23-year-old Luis Louis for the January, 2013 robbery of a livery cab driver, the incident caught on taxi-cam.

After a five-day jury trial and two days of deliberation, Louis was convicted of robbery in the second degree, a Class-B Violent Felony.

Louis claimed he had just gotten off his overnight job at a drug store and had taken a subway to the Bronx, stopping in at his mother’s apartment, and then hopped the cab to go to his girlfriend’s. After negotiating a price of $12 for the ride, the video shows Louis relaxing in the back seat. But it was anything but relaxing when the cab reached its destination at Cypress Avenue and East 137th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. There, Louis handed the driver a bill, but when cabbie
Bartolo Taverez returned his change, that was not good enough.
Louis reached into his pocket and displayed what appeared to be a silver-barreled revolver and grabbed Taverez's arm, demanding all the money he had – $52. After all his funds were given up, the driver put his hands in the air in a gesture of surrender, at which time Louis fled.

Louis was arrested several weeks later after the taxicab video was released to the media and a tip was received by police, which led to his capture. The defendant faces up to 25 years when he is sentenced on June 25th by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Albert Lorenzo, Part T-33, Bronx Supreme Court Hall of Justice, 265 E. 161st Street.
