New Woodlawn Van Service

Riverdale Report

By Robert Press

In 2010 when the MTA cut back service on the BX34 bus the residents of Woodlawn were the ones who had no weekend bus service. Ms. Christine Sheridan (President of the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association) with other residents of Woodlawn asked State Senator Jeff Klein if he could do anything to restore the BX34 weekend service. Unable to restore the weekend BX 34 service Senator Klein did the next best thing by working with New York City TLC Commissioner David Yassky to provide a licensed van service from the Dorcel Edenwald Bus Service for the lost weekend BX34 bus service. Mr. Carl Gromes (owner of the van service) said that his company came about when the MTA cut out the old BX14 bus route, and his company has flourished since then. He added that he is happy to service the Woodlawn community in a similar situation. The van service will only be in effect on weekends from 9 AM to 9 PM and cost $2.00. Schedules of the new weekend van service will be posted in local Woodlawn businesses.

Last Saturday was the date of the Mable Hill Clean Up put together by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and Community Board #8's Environmental and Sanitation Committee. Mr. Tony Edwards of Councilman Rodriguez's office (who coordinated the clean up) told us “The Marble Hill area just needs a little clean up.” Dozens of people showed up to form several teams of people that were provided with brooms, rakes, shovels gloves, and trash bags to make the Marble Hill area a little cleaner. This is done all through out the community board area at different times we were told, as in May the Parks Committee did a similar clean up in one of the community boards parks by the Jerome Park Reservoir.

If you travel by car on Broadway north by West 242nd Street you will see something new at the corner if you are planning to make a left turn from Broadway. While you were able to make a left turn from Broadway to West 242nd Street at any time the light was green, there is now a red turning arrow to prevent a left turn while southbound traffic goes through the intersection. Traffic backed up at this intersection due to the Westchester buses that were parked in the bus stop waiting for their scheduled time to start so the # 9 city bus had to double park often to let passengers off at the bus stop. This left only one lane of traffic to flow north on Broadway which was the turning lane. Now that cars have to wait for the green turning arrow this intersection has become gridlocked at times. Now that summer is here we wonder just how bad the gridlock will get with all the park goers that use Broadway.

Predictions in the Rangel Race

100 PERCENT

By Robert Press

Before we make our prediction as to who will win the 13th C.D. race, and just how we feel the candidates will finish, first we hope that if you live in the 13th Congressional District you will go to your local poll site on Tuesday June 26th to vote for the candidate of your choice.

This year redistricting for congress was not done by the state legislature, but by a federal Judge at the last minute. The federal Primary election is not being held on the same day as the state legislature elections, but a month and a half earlier on June 26th. The state Primary election will take place on Thursday September 13th due to that Tuesday is 9/11/2012. That has allowed for some state legislators to be able to run for a congressional seat, and then their old state seat if they are not elected to congress if they choose to. That is possible as the end of petition collecting time for the state primary is July 10th two weeks after the federal primary elections. In fact there are a few current congressional candidates statewide that are currently state elected officials, as is the case in the 13th C.D.

The race for the 13th C.D. has turned ugly between the two leading candidates as to a question of a petition that was circulated by an assembly candidate that had 13th C.D. candidate Adriano Espaillat on it for his current state senate seat. When he was seeking the endorsement of the Ben Franklin Democratic Club of the 81st Assembly District, candidate Espaillat said that he was only going to run for the 13th Congressional seat and not for his old senate seat if he some how was to loose the congressional election. We received an e-mail copy of the petition in question, and spoke to the campaign manager for candidate Espaillat who said that Mr. Espaillat did not authorize his name to be put on the petition, and that Adriano Espaillat is running for the 13th C.D. and not the state senate. We have been told a few different tales as to how this could have happened including one that has the petition as the work of one of candidate Espaillat's opponents.

As you read this column there will be late endorsements coming in such as the New York Times for Mr. Clyde Williams (in the 2010 primary the Times endorsed Ms. Joyce Johnson), and we don't know if and for who the Post or Daily News will endorse. We are not endorsing any of the candidates, but giving our view of how the 13th C.D. vote will go. In the 2010 Democratic Primary there were 51,668 votes cast in the 15th Congressional District. Incumbent Charles Rangel received 26,101 votes according to certified results for 51 percent of the vote to win the 2010 primary. Congressman Rangel had five opponents. The second place finisher Adam Clayton Powell IV received 11,834 votes for 23 percent of the vote. Ms Joyce Johnson finished third and received 6,444 votes for 13 percent of the vote. The other three candidates split the remaining 13 percent of the vote.

Things have changed however in 2012 as 200,000, mostly Hispanic Bronx voters, were added to the new 13th Congressional District. While Mr. Rangel faces one less opponent this time around the four candidates he is facing are much stronger this year than in 2010, and we feel that it will be those of the 200,000 Bronx voters in the 13th C. D. who come out to vote that will decide the winner. We do not expect any of the five candidates to receive close to 50 percent of the vote, and the winner should come in with less than 40 percent of the vote.

Our crystal ball prediction in the 13th C.D. Democratic Primary is as follows. Mr. Craig Schley who ran in the 2010 general election on the Independence Party line and not in the Democratic Primary in 2010 will come in fifth place with up to 8 percent of the vote. Ms. Joyce Johnson has lost some of her luster from 2010 (including the endorsement of the New York Times), and in 2012 will garner less than 10 percent of the vote. Any of the remaining three candidates could win this race, but we see Mr. Clyde Williams coming in third with between 15 and 19 percent of the vote. That leaves close to 65 percent of the vote for Congressman Rangel and Senator Espaillat to split. Our crystal ball kept changing here, but when we asked it for the final tally and the winner it came up 36 percent for the new Congressman Adriano Espaillat and 29 percent for Mr. Charlie Rangel. Our crystal ball also had a message for Manhattan Democratic County Leader Assemblyman Keith Wright. The message for Mr. Wright was that next time you should make sure that there is more than one Latino in the race to split the Latino vote if you want to win the seat. Our crystal ball says that you have such a candidate.

The Entertainer meets the Grandi Man: Yesterday Cedric the Entertainer watched Yankees batting practice at Yankee Stadium prior to the team’s 7:05 p.m. game vs. Atlanta. While in the Bronx, Cedric participated in a longtime Yankee Stadium tradition by heading out to the Bleachers to help lead “Roll Call” with the “Bleacher Creatures,” before watching the game in the stands. Here he poses with Yankee Slugger Curtis Granderson.

Cedric is in New York to promote his new TV Land sitcom “The Soul Man.”

No angels

Wakefield Area News
By Mary V. Lauro

BRONX, NEW YORK, June 18- "If men were angels," wrote James Madison in Federalist Paper No. 51 back in 1788, “No government would be necessary.” Well and good. But does that mean they are devils?
It certainly seems so. Almost on a daily basis, through the news media, we learn of another elected official being accused of or indicted of criminal behavior. Wakefield has already suffered the conviction of State Senator Guy Velella. We understand that on June 19, Councilman Larry Seabrook will again go to trial for a variety of offenses.
The list of elected officials who are being investigated, or who leave much to be desired is long, but we concentrate on those closest to us keeping in mind that an accusation or an investigation does not mean guilt. We repeat that. An accusation does not mean guilt. On the other hand, where there is smoke, there usually is fire. We mention Pedro Espada because we had one of his clinics right here in Wakefield. He has been convicted on at least one count.
Sadly, earlier this year The New York Post ran a news story insinuating foul play by our Senator Jeffrey Klein. Nothing further has been heard which is good news, more for him than for the electorate. And now, we have Congressman Engel being criticized for taking a mortgage from one of his highest donors. Not illegal, but not right. Even so and above all, let's not forget the Spitzer debacle.
When one considers that this nation was forged by men who pledged their “sacred honor,” one wonders how that honor was lost in so short a time. Consider that at the urging of former Mayor Ed Koch, the majority in both houses of our state legislature pledged to reject any gerrymandering made on a partisan basis. Seventy five of those lawmakers broke their promise, four of them from New York City and one of them none other than our own Senator Klein!
The prevalence of all sorts of hanky-panky in our government led to the formation of the Center for Public Integrity which has been around for some time. This year it ranked our state government 15th from the bottom of the 50 states. Can you imagine? That is worse than getting a D. It is almost an F.
Well, it should be no surprise. We know that we have some sterling legislators working for us whether it be in the City Council, the Assembly or the Senate, but we also know we have some duds who do very little else but the work on getting re-elected usually by spreading our tax dollars to favorite causes or persons and taking advantage of every photo opportunity. The sad thing is that, we, the voters, permit this to go on. But that is another story.
In any case, we are asking all our legislators to look into three problems that the average citizen is dealing with. They should not be difficult to solve if they put their heads together. First is the parking problem. Left unchecked, road rage will take second place to parking rage. Lives will be lost. By the same token, Muni meters should be brought to the attention of the Supreme Court as a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Second, adjustment is needed in rental laws for two and three-family houses. Eviction of problematic and non-paying tenants is entirely too long, and costly. And third, how about bringing some order to our zoning ordinances and our building regulations? The City is harboring hundreds of fire traps in illegal conversions.
Are these three items really so difficult to accomplish?

Job Fair

Bronx Chamber, Hutchinson Metro Center Host Job Fair
The Bronx Chamber of Commerce hosted a New York Job Fair on June 7 at its headquarters at the Hutchinson Metro Center. On-site interviews for a variety of jobs requiring a variety of skill levels were offered. Hundreds of people attended the event. NYPD and FDNY had booths along with many other Bronx businesses. The Job Fair was one of 11 to be held by New York State throughout the month of June.
