There Could Be More Hispanics For Trump Than What’s Been Said

There Could Be More Hispanics For Trump Than What’s Been Said
(Despite what elites say, one Bronx pol says there could be a large group looking to support Trump)

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
By Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz
District 32 Bronx County, New York

You should know that even though the so-called experts, political pundits and pollsters are having their say, I believe that there are more Hispanics supporting Donald Trump than what “they” say.

According to a Univision poll, 70 percent of Hispanics reject Donald Trump, and according to this same poll, 30 percent are with Trump. This by itself is a record for the Republican Trump, who will only need 10 percent more to reach a 40 percent of Hispanics supporting his bid. As you know, there is a very small percentage of Republicans who have ever obtained 40 percent of the Hispanic vote in any national election.

It is important for the pollsters to take into consideration that when we speak about the Hispanic vote, we have to separate it into various groups. Among them are Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Mexicans, and Dominicans.

I guarantee you, my dear reader, that each one of those groups have a different opinion of Donald Trump. Also, in order to have an understanding of some of the idiosyncrasies that exist among Hispanics, we have to divide Hispanics into 3 groups: the Puerto Ricans who are American citizens by birth, the documented immigrants, and the undocumented immigrants.

When I walk the streets of New York - especially in Bronx County - and speak with Hispanics, much to my surprise the things that I hear from them are very different than what the papers and the pollsters are saying about them and Trump.

The Puerto Ricans, who claims to be the first Hispanic group who came to this country and received many abuses, were rejected, receiving many “macanazos” (hit with the police baton), open the door for every other Hispanic group, and ate the bones. Now, they feel rejected, displaced and taken for granted, receiving less benefits than they need, while others eat the meat.

For this reason, many Puerto Ricans are carrying strong emotional burdens deep inside. Many Puerto Ricans go about their lives, unwilling to publicly expressing their feelings and publicly going along with it all. This is due to the fact that unions, newspapers and even elected officials have made them feel like it is a crime to express their true feelings.

Many Puerto Ricans are like walking political time bombs, ready to explode, and they might think that in Donald Trump they have the person to press the red button.

The second group is the Cubans. The majority of Cubans who live in the United States have been expatriated by the dictator Fidel Castro, and they are dying to see Cuba free of that dictatorship. After seeing and hearing Donald Trump, little by little they have been aligning themselves with Trump to the point that even in Florida, where their former Governor Jeb Bush and their current U.S. Senator Marco Rubio reside and who are also candidates, Donald Trump is taking all of the Cuban votes in that state.

The Dominicans, after seeing the Dominican Republican government’s confrontation with immigration laws involving Haiti, they have been placed in a predicament. It seems that the same ones who are criticizing Donald Trump are the same ones who have turned against the Dominican Republic, calling for boycotts and even stigmatizing the government of the Dominican Republic as racist. This is all because the Dominican Republic wants to be respected and wants to have its immigration laws respected.

These realities just might give Donald Trump a little advantage with the Dominican vote here in the United States.

In regard to the Mexicans, I believe that this sector of the Hispanic community will be the most difficult, if not impossible for Mr. Donald Trump to convince. This is a result of statements he made on June 16, 2015 when he declared his candidacy and stated: "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists."

For this reason, the majority of Mexicans have turned against Trump.

On the other hand, my dear reader, there are so many documented immigrants who came to this nation through legal channels. They sacrificed themselves, paid the price and waited their turn, and after becoming American citizens, they themselves do not support illegal immigration.

I personally have heard some of them saying: “If I sacrificed myself and waited my turn, then they have to wait their turn, too.”

You should know, my dear reader, that the sentiments and frustrations from these different groups of Hispanics should be taken into consideration by the political pundits before deciding who is supporting Donald Trump and who is not.

As my philosophy teacher from Lehman College in the Bronx used to say: “Children of my heart, that blue sky isn’t blue and it’s not a sky.”

I am Senator Reverend  Rubén Díaz and this is what you should know.

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- It takes a lot of bulbs to light the stairwells and hallways in 171 buildings that are home to tens of thousands of New Yorkers.

But the owner of the Parkchester apartments in the Bronx took advantage of Con Edison energy efficiency incentives to replace lighting in common areas throughout the giant complex.

The upgrades will save 1.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year. In terms of preventing greenhouse emissions, that’s the equivalent of taking 232 cars off the road.

“Our state’s energy landscape is changing dramatically, as utility customers look for ways to manage their usage, save money and protect the environment,” said Matthew Ketschke, Con Edison’s vice president, Distributed Resource Integration. “Our energy efficiency programs are one way that Con Edison helps customers like the Parkchester apartments achieve these goals.”

“We are pleased with how smoothly and quickly this project moved along and with the quality of the lighting that was installed,” said Charles Tucci, the general manager at Parkchester. “The Con Edison program gives owners of large businesses a chance to offset some of the costs of upgrades that will save them money in the long run.”

The project completed this summer included new lighting fixtures, LED bulbs, lamps and ballasts to replace older, less efficient equipment. Con Edison, through its Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency program, will put $407,000 toward the $1 million cost.

The Parkchester apartments have been an important part of New York City’s housing stock since the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. finished building them in 1941. The complex is on 129 acres and includes more than 100 offices and retail spaces.

Con Edison’s Commercial and Industrial program offers incentives for upgrading equipment and for performance-based energy-saving solutions. Con Edison will pay up to 50 percent of the cost of a study to evaluate a building’s energy use and recommend ways to increase electric and gas efficiency. Con Edison has an energy-saving program for everyone. To find out which programs are right for you, visit coned.com/energyefficiency/ or call 1-877-870-6118.

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. [NYSE: ED], one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenues and $45 billion in assets. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y.

Driver Sought in Death of Biker on City Island

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Police are looking for the driver who struck and killed a female bicycle rider killed as she prepared to cross the City Island Bridge.

Officials say the 27-year-old victim Gabriela Aguilar-Vallinos was riding her bike westbound on City Island Avenue, when she was struck at 11:45 p.m., on Friday, September 11, shortly after leaving work at the popular Sammy's Shrimp Box.

Vallinos was rushed to Jacobi Hospital with serious trauma to her head and died a short time later.

Police were looking for a white 2015, two-door Hyundai Genesis or Honda with front end damage, that fled westbound over the bridge.

One police source stated, "The driver briefly stopped long enough to catch a look at his victim, before he fled the scene."

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at (800) 577-TIPS.

Two-hours later a motorcycle crash was reported at Commerce Street and Newbold Avenue in the Soundview section. Police say the unidentified 30-year-old rider was turning when he slammed his Suzuki motorcycle into a fence at a high rate of speed, pinning his 27 year-old female passenger under a gate.

The victim was eventually extricated and transported to a local hospital, where she died. Her name has not yet been released pending family notification.

The motorcycle driver remains in critical condition.

100 PERCENT

You Win Some/You Lose Some

In a surprise to many, but not to some current 36th District
State Senator Ruth Hassel-Thompson came in third in the race to be the Mayor of the City of Mount Vernon.
Both Senator Hassel-Thompson and the soon to be former Mayor lost to Mount Vernon Councilman Richard Thomas. Thomas garnered almost 3,000 votes way ahead of Mayor Davis who received under 2,000 votes. Senator Hassel-Thompson was a distant third almost 500 votes behind the soon to be former Mayor Davis. What this means for the current State Senator who said that even if she lost the election for Mayor of Mount Vernon that she would not be running for re-election as the state senator from the 36th district in 2016 means will be found out next year, if not sooner. Also what does this do to candidates who had lined up to go after what they thought would be a vacant State Senate seat? One has to also wonder since Benny Catalia who has run so many successful campaigns for Bronx County elected officials, what went wrong? More on this and the 36thState Senate race in future columns, but I still like my choice Mr. Ricky Martinez in the 36th State Senate race in 2016. However as I always say – 'You never know what may happen next in politics.’
It was nice to see Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx DA Robert Johnson, City Councilman Andy King, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Congressman Eliot Engel, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (even if Heastie did not say a word to me), as well as the over 100 others who came to White Plains Road and the corner of East 229th Street this past Saturday to see the renaming of the street that runs along the Community Board 12 office in the name of the former CB 12 District Manager who passed away after countless years of work for the community and the community board. I only wish that CB 12 Chairman Father Richard Gorman regains his full health so he can return to his tireless work for the community and the Archdiocese he loves so much.
State Senator Jeff Klein was at it again last week co-hosting the Bronx HIRE job fair with the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, and then the next day in a school (one of the few that is actually working) with UFT President Michael Mulgrew. The school was the International School for Liberal Arts at the Walton Campus on Reservoir Avenue in Senator Klein's district which is one of the 'Community Learning Schools throughout the city that Senator Klein says is a win win for everyone, since the school is involved in more than just teaching, but in the whole community spirit of raising a child. You can go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com to read more about the visit to the school, and to see photos of why the school works including the recently reopened swimming pool for the students to use.

Speaking of Job Fairs, on Tuesday September 22nd there will be a Job Fair at the Bronx County Building located at 851 Grand Concourse (at East 161stStreetfrom 11 AM – 3 PM in the courthouse Rotunda on the first floor. Over 200 positions are available through the New York Department of Labor and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation. Job Seekers are urged to pre-register online at www.labor.ny.gov/secure/workforce/recruitment-event-bronx/

The Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association is having their annual fall Community Health and Wellness fair on Saturday September 26th from 10 AM – 5 PM on Reservoir Avenue between University Avenue and West 179thStreet, alongside the Jerome Park Reservoir. You can call KHNIA at 718-648-7550 for more information, or to be a part of the event.
Lastly, speaking of health one has to wonder just how Legionnaires Disease was found in the water supply at the Melrose Houses where tenants were given filters to filter the hot water Mr. Mayor? I ask that question since there are no cooling towers that are at the Melrose Houses, and it was explicitly said by you Mr. Mayor that the water supply was safe since Legionnaires Disease is found only in the water used in water cooling towers. I guess I am going to have to wear my Melrose Houses T-Shirt next time you have a press conference to ask you just how did Legionnaires Disease get into the water supply at the Melrose Houses? See you soon Mr. Mayor.
