De Blasio Endorses Cohen

Riverdale Report
By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 11- Our headline was to take place on Friday February 1st, but due to Ed Koch's passing the endorsement was pushed back a week to this past Friday February 8th.

With snow falling and weather reports of an upcoming blizzard NYC Public Advocate (and candidate for mayor) Bill de Blasio and 11th city council candidate Andrew Cohen met in front of the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center for de Blasio to endorse Cohen for the 11th city council seat currently held by term limited Councilman G. Oliver Koppell. This is now the second major Democratic candidate for mayor to endorse Andrew Cohen for the 11th city council seat. City Council Speaker (and candidate for mayor) Christine Quinn endorsed Cohen's candidacy two weeks ago, and like the Quinn endorsement there was no across endorsement of de Blasio by Cohen. After the endorsement both Public Advocate de Blasio and council candidate Cohen went inside to talk with MMCC director Don Bluestone who had a lot to talk about on how MMCC programs have been cut back over the past few years. Bluestone then gave the pair a tour of the center. You can go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com to read more on the endorsement, and to see photos of the event.

Last Thursday night Senator Jeff Klein hosted a free flu vaccine shot event in the Van Cortlandt Village section of his district. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz helped sponsor the event, and also on hand was Community Board #8 member & city council candidate Andrew Cohen. An RN from Jacobi Hospital administered the flu vaccine shots, and you can go to my blog to see a photo of Mr. Emanuel Badger receive his flu vaccination from nurse Kylia Ester. Credit for the event also goes to Mr. John Doyle of the North Bronx Healthcare Network.

The 50th Precinct is hosting an Operation I.D. Cell Phone Safety Program on Sunday February 24th at the Riverdale Y located at 5625 Arlington Avenue from 9 AM – 1 PM. Information on cell phone safety, registering the serial number of your cell phone, and engraving with a NYPD serial number if the phone is lost or stolen and found by the police department for quick return. This should be of importance to owners of the new I-Phone, which is one of the hottest items being stolen.

Don't forget to check my blog for the latest listing of events going on at Wave Hill. Even though there is snow on the ground Wave Hill is open and holding many different activities.
My good friend Mr. David Kornbluh is hosting an evening reception to meet Public Advocate Bill de Blasio on Monday night February 18th from 6 – 8 PM at 2600 Netherland Avenue Apt. 2408. You can call 646-480-4908 or e-mail elanadleopold@gmail.com for more information as this is a fund raiser for mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio.

If you have any comments about this column or would like to have an event listed or covered in this column or on my blog you can e-mail us at 100percentbronxnews@gmail.com or call 718-644-4199 Mr. Robert Press.

18th Ranked University of Dayton Stops Fordham, 68-57

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 11- A
heavy snowstorm in the northeast nearly postponed but did delay the start of the highly anticipated Atlantic-10 women’s basketball contest between the Fordham Rams (16-7, 6-2) and the 18th nationally ranked Flyers of the University of Dayton (21-1) by five hours. The Sunday evening game began at 7 pm in the Rose Hill Gym on Fordham’s Bronx campus.
The Rams, recording team statistics never achieved since joining the A-10 Conference nearly 20 years ago, were looking forward to a victory over a nationally ranked team to be taken seriously throughout the country.

The first half of the game saw the lead see-saw repeatedly and the score tied on 10 occasions. The largest advantage of the half was not achieved until the final minute of play when the Flyers took a 33-27 lead. The lead was cut to three as Marah Strickland sunk a three with five seconds on the clock.
Dayton made half-time adjustments, which allowed them to start the second half with a 14-5 scoring run that gave the Flyers its largest lead of the game, 47-35, at 14:28. Fordham immediately followed with a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to five, 54-49, with 7:45 remaining in the contest.

Most team statistics were close, but the disparity in several categories gave the win to the visitors. The Flyers scored 46 points in the paint contrasted with 16 for the Rams. Dayton took advantage to Fordham’s turnovers, scoring 18 from Fordham’s errors contrasted to only seven by the Rams. Dayton’s bench strength added 34 points, one-half of the team’s points. All of Fordham’s points were scored by its starting five.

Strickland led all scorers with 21points, which tied her career high. Erin Rooney scored 18. Arielle Collins netted 11, but was very active on defense as she tied her career high with six steals.
The next game for the Rams will take place at noon on Wednesday, February 13, at home against George Washington University. The mid-week matinee is a yearly event in which Bronx schools are invited to bring their students.

Basketball Falls To Old Westbury, 82-62

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 8- Braving the early part of the winter storm to play a conference game one day earlier than originally scheduled, the Maritime basketball hit the road on Friday to take on Skyline foe Old Westbury.

It was the Panthers that came out on top, however, with an 82-62 victory that dropped the Privateers’ record to 4-16 (3-12 Skyline) on the season and improve their own conference-mark to a perfect 16-0 with an overall record of 21-3.

Senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) led Maritime with 16 points, while sophomore-transfer Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) recorded 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) rounded out the team’s double-digit scorers with 10 points.

The Panthers got strong contributions from seniors Kerel Mitchell and Darnell Chavis, who registered 19 points, apiece, to lead all players.

The Privateers will be ending the regular season with three-straight home games next week, hosting Mount St. Mary on Thursday at 7 p.m., Purchase College on Thursday night at 6 p.m. and Yeshiva on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.
