BRONX, NEW YORK, February 5- A 9-year old child continues to fight for his life after falling from the roof of his Nelson Avenue building, police now say he was thrown from the roof by a teenage neighbor.
According to police, cops and paramedics were called to 1545 Nelson Avenue in the Morris Heights section, at 8:30 p.m., on February 1. Upon their arrival they discovered 9-year-old Freddy Martin, "unconscious and unresponsive," after falling off the 5-story building.
Martin was rushed to Columbia -Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, where he remains in critical condition, having suffered a broken arm, a broken leg as well as internal bleeding. One unconfirmed report stated the child remains on life-support.
The following day the NYPD would announce the arrest of Martin's neighbor Casmine Aska, 17, who was charged with multiple charges, including one count of attempted murder in the second degree.
After being held for some 20 hours, Aska was escorted out of the 46th Precinct in handcuffs. The teen suspect did not respond to questions shouted by reporters from across the street, but the young man also did not try and hide his face, like many prisoners often do.
Police say Martin managed to tell an officer what happened and reportedly named his assailant, before slipping into unconsciousness.
Police say Aska, a student at Harry S. Truman High School, first told detectives he had nothing to with the child's fall, but later admitted he was on the roof and that the child accidentally fell.
One published report quoting an unnamed police source stated that the teen had four prior arrests for harassment, robbery, menacing and assault. Other published reports stated the teen’s police record was sealed.
Aska was also charged with assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. Aska was being held without bail. Charges would likely be upgraded to murder if Martin does not survive.

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 4- Friday evening saw a sold out crowd brave the cold to see catholic high school basketball as Saint Raymond lost to Bronx rival Cardinal Hayes on an overtime buzzer beater 91-89.
The match-up was mostly Hayes early as they lead by double figures throughout much of the first half, taking a 46-36 lead into halftime.
Saint Rays responded in the second half, tying the game at 60-60 by the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter. Both teams battled back and forth with each regaining the lead through the rest of the fourth, leaving the Ravens of Saint Raymond one last possession with 2.9 seconds remaining tied at 75-75.
A missed basket set up the overtime drama as the Ravens again had a chance to win taking the lead 89-88 and a free throw, giving Hayes one last chance with just under 4 seconds remaining. Hayes made the running three point attempt as time expired giving them the 91-89 victory and a 15-5 record as Saint Rays falls to 14-7.

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 4- The first meeting between the two Rams teams, Fordham (14-6, 4-1) and VCU (8-13, 1-5), on Saturday, February 2, was completely one-sided. Fordham lead from the opening minute and built its advantage a game-high 30 points at its conclusion.
Prior to the game, Fordham’s Marah Strickland was honored for scoring her 1,000 collegiate point on January 20. She scored Fordham’s first eight points of the game leading her team to an 8-2 advantage at 17:08.
The leading scorer in the Atlantic-10, Robyn Parks of VCU, hit the next basket. Fordham then began a 20-2 scoring run to take a commanding 28-6 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first half. The two teams each scored 13 points during the last five minutes of the half.
An 8-2 run by VCU cut the deficit to below 20 points, 50-32, for the only time in the second half with 13 minutes left in the contest. The Fordham offensive continued unabated for the rest of the game as Fordham outscored VCU 21-10 in the final 13 minutes.
Each of Fordham’s starters contributed mightily to the victory. Freshman Samantha Clark, a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, scored 10 and grabbed 7 boards. Two significant transfer student-athletes, Strickland and Erin Rooney, led the scoring with 18 points each. Senior Arielle Collins scored 17 and had 7 rebounds. Junior Abigail Corning scored 8 and led the team with 8 assists.
The Fordham women’s team has created a slogan for the season, “Tradition begins now”, that is extremely appropriate to describe their accomplishments under the direction of Coach Stephanie Gaitley. The team achievements this season have, thus far, surpassed what has been done since Fordham joined the Atlantic-10 at the start of the 1995-6 season.
The win on Sunday guarantees a winning record this year for the first time since 1994-5. The victory over VCU was Fordham’s fifth in the conference, which tied their record high in the A-10. The 10 wins in the non-conference schedule was the first time the team reached double figured since 1983-4.The seven game winning streak in December-January was the longest since 1992-3.
The tradition that the experienced, capable, decent and personable coach has brought is one of winning. She humbly gave credit for the success to her players in remarks at a post-game reception, but it must be realized that the addition of Clark, Rooney and Strickland to the squad would not have taken place if Gaitley was not the coach.
Fordham will travel to Philadelphia for its next contest, against LaSalle, on Wednesday before returning home to face the University of Dayton on Sunday afternoon, February 10, and George Washington University on Wednesday afternoon, February 13.
