BRONX, NEW YORK, November 13- Detectives from the 46th Precinct have arrested a man, they say drowned, his own son and attempted to kill his daughter and himself after eating pizza laced with rat poison.
Police say Leonardo Espinal, 47, was taken from a local hospital to the 46th Precinct for questioning on November 8, in regards to the drowning death of his son Stewart, age 5, and the attempted murder of his daughter Mia, age 7.
A day earlier cops were called to the W. 179 Street home after Espinal reportedly locked himself and the children in a bathroom. The boy was found submerged in the bathtub and unresponsive. The girl was vomiting from the poison.
Both children were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where Stewart was pronounced dead on arrival and where Mia continues to recover.
The bizarre scene unfolded a week after the children's mother asked Espinal to leave the home after 10 years together.
As Espinal was brought out of the 46th Precinct on Ryer Avenue, a pair of reporters asked, "Why'd you do it?" Espinal just buried his chin in his jacket as detectives placed him in a car for a ride to central booking.
Espinal, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, was charged with murder and attempted murder and was ordered held without bail. Espinal is due back in court on November 14.
One resident of 86 W. 179 Street, where the children were discovered, recalled, "I heard the screaming, but I didn't know what was happening."

Senate Majority Leader Espaillat
100 PERCENT
By Robert Press
BRONX, NEW YORK, November 12- We called the Obama victory, and last weekend it was announced that President Obama did win the state of Florida. In this wonderful new age of technology it now takes weeks or more to certify an election that previously was done in days the old way. That brings us to our next subject the New York State Senate. It could be 2013 before we know which party or who has has control. Will it be the Democrats, Republicans, The IDC, Dos Amigos ll, or any one of a number of other possibilities. How long will it be until Republican State Senators realize that it is a matter of time before it will take more than one or two rogue Democrats to make a difference in the state senate.
As for who will be Senate Majority Leader should the Democrats have that edge, don't look for John Sampson to get that position again. Forget former Leader Malcolm Smith (who was dumped during the Espada fiasco) as he is rumored to be talking to Republicans about running for mayor in 2013. We also do not see Senator Jeff Klein as Majority Leader, but a person such as State Senator Adriano Espaillat who can be supported by all Democrats. The State Senate Democrats are their own worst enemy, as we have seen in the past. Check my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com for daily updates on this and the outcome of the 46th State Senate district as the recount begins with Democrat Ceclia Tkaczyk holding a 139 vote lead over Republican George Amedore. This race will be a deciding factor on who controls the State Senate.
The cost of Hurricane Sandy is now projected at $30 Billion according to Governor Cuomo, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has only $12 Billion in aid to give. It is unlikely that a Republican Congress will increase that by much is any.
Back in New York City, (not including any additional Hurricane Sandy costs) Mayor Bloomberg wants to cut libraries, after school programs, increase the fee for school lunches, and parking meter rates to make up for a $600 million gap caused by the probable rejection of a new taxi plan for the outer boroughs.
Here in the Bronx, candidates are said to be jockeying for position should current Bronx BP Ruben Diaz Jr. decide to run for a citywide office such as Public Advocate. Names being tosses around besides term limited Councilman Joel Rivera are, Councilman James Vacca, Councilman Fernando Cabrera, and even Assemblyman Nelson Castro. Both Vacca and Cabrera have another term to serve in the City Council, but Cabrera should he choose to run for BP always has the State Assembly or State Senate seats to run for when he looses. This noise could also be coming out of the Jose Rivera camp as Assemblyman Rivera has said that he wants to return to the City Council so he can fatten his pension. The one with the least to loose would be Assemblyman Castro, as he would still be a member of the State Assembly. However with Vacca as BP and Castro as Deputy BP it could make for an interesting ticket. We however believe that Ruben Diaz Jr. (the 13th BP) who has two terms still to run for as BP will stay as BP and run in 2021 after he has made a legacy for himself like his mentor #11.
In the 11th City Council district as recently elected Bronx Democratic County Committee Vice-Chair Mr. Andrew Cohen joins nut vendor Mr. Clifford Stanton in the race to replace term limited Councilman G. Oliver Koppell, we await to see when the real candidate Mr. Ari Hoffnung announces. Hoffnung who ran in 2005 against Koppell was the leading candidate to replace him in 2009 until the city council overturned the term limit law. Hoffnung has maintained his war chest of just under eighty thousand dollars for a possible race in 2013. Hoffnung currently Assistant Comptroller for Budget and chief Policy Officer has expressed interest to me in the council race. Now that the position of Deputy Comptroller of Accountancy and Budget currently held by newly elected State Senator Simca Felder will open up it should further complicate Hoffnungs decision, as will the possibility of a new City Comptroller should current City Comptroller John Liu run for mayor as he has said.

Fordham Comes Back to Defeat Lafayette
BRONX, NEW YORK, November 12- The Victory Bell on the Rose Hill campus of Fordham University was repeatedly rung after 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, signifying a Fordham football victory. The Rams have been victorious in all four home games this season.
After trailing Lafayette throughout the first half, the Fordham Rams (6-4) scored the first 17 points of the second half to overtake the visiting Lafayette Leopards (5-5), 36-27, in the penultimate regular season game for both teams.
A touchdown and field goal by the visitors put Lafayette in front by a 10-0 score with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter. The next drive of 72 yards consisted of four rushes by Carlton Koonce that culminated in a one yard touchdown run for the Rams at 6:17.
Koonce continued his success carry the football during the rest of the contest. He gained net total of 189 yards on the ground in 31 carries. The elated senior deflected credit for his accomplishment to the offensive line, “The line did a great job; they executed.”
The game was Koonce’s seventh this season in which he gained more than 100 yards by rushing. His 1,364 rushing yards is the fourth highest in Fordham history. With one game remaining, Koonce needs 113 yards to tie Kirwin Watson for the Ram record.
The two teams each registered a touchdown and a field goal during the second quarter. The Fordham touchdown was recorded on the fifth longest complete pass in Fordham history. Ryan Higgins connected with Brian Wetzel for 89 yards. After the game, the quarterback said, “The long pass was all Brian.” As Higgins was speaking, Wetzel, sitting next to him, was shaking his head in the negative.
The duo combined successfully again at 9:10 of the second half. A five-yard completed touchdown pass gave Fordham its first lead in the contest. The drive and the touchdown would not have taken place without an interception by Fordham’s Jake Dixon on the Lafayette 29.
Higgins continued to move upward in the Fordham career rankings in passes, pass completions and yards gained. John Skelton, the starting quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals, whose team was on a bye week, returned to his alma mater to watch his former team play. Higgins said he was encouraged by speaking with Skelton.
The Fordham defense struck again with 39 seconds left in the third as Jordan Chapman ran an intercepted pass 64 yards for Fordham’s fourth touchdown of the game. The absence of the team’s leading tackler, Michael Martin, inspired rather than deflated his fellow. They made three interceptions and sacked the opposing quarterback three times. After the game first year Fordham coach praised the defense, “In the second half, the defense came out and responded to the challenge.”
Patrick Murray, Fordham’s all-purpose kicker, was voted Patriot League Special Teams Player of the week for the last two weeks and six times for the season. The All-America candidate had another fine game on Saturday. He successfully kicked two field goals, 25 and 31 yards respectively, punted five times with an average of 48.4 yards per punt and kicked off seven times with a 64.9 average per kickoff. He also made all four points after touchdown attempts. Murray also raised his Fordham record of field goals in a single season to 23.
Moorhead saluted the seniors on the squad, “I just feel so good for the senior class. They’ve taken the program to new heights this year and set the stage for what we’re going to do in the future.”
The seniors will be honored next Saturday as the Rams face Colgate in the final contest of the year.
Volleyball Victory-Some of the Family Weekend crowd at Fordham walked to the Rose Hill Gym to watch the final volleyball game of the season. The Rams met the University of Rhode Island. Two seniors, Michele Keathley and Randi Ewing, were honored before the contest. Members of their families including Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member Patrick Ewing, Randi’s father, were present to support the two young women.
The Rams, as in the recently completed football contest, came from behind to claim victory. Fordham lost the first two sets but rebounded to win the final three sets. Both seniors contributed to the exciting win. Keathley had nine digs; Ewing had six kills and eight blocks. The 6-0 Ewing, wearing #33 like her father, finished her collegiate athletic career with 329 blocks, third in Fordham’s career rankings for blocks.
