#Fordham Knocks Off Army West Point, 37-35

Rams beat second NCAA FBS team in three years

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)-  The motto of the 2015 Fordham University football Rams is “So What?” as in: You lost over 30 seniors to graduation? “So What?”. You have 18 new starters due to those losses. “So What?” You’re opening your 2015 season with 30 freshmen and their first collegiate game will be at Army West Point. “So What?” There were loud shouts of “So What?” in the visiting locker room at Michie Field tonight as the Rams pulled off another win over an FBS team, defeating Army West Point, 37-35.

Fordham head coach Joe Moorhead may want his agent to start shopping the screen rights for the game as what the Rams accomplished over the weekend is usually seen only in Hollywood scripts. Starting a quarterback who hasn’t thrown a pass in over two years. No problem. Starting a placekicker who had never kicked a field goal in a college game. Big deal. Starting nine new players on defense after allowing over 350 rushing yards to Army last year. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Junior Kevin Anderson, who last attempted a pass in a game as a senior in high school in 2012, looked like he’d been a three-year starter, completing 15 of 23 passes for 322 yards  and rushing for a score, while Patriot League preseason offensive player of the year Chase Edmonds showed why he was the 2014 Jerry Rice Award winner as he rushed for 110 yards on 20 carries with three scores and also caught six passes for 140 yards.

Defensively, the Rams allowed Army 256 rushing yards, more than 100 fewer than last year, and came up with big plays when needed, especially on a late two-point try by the Black Knights. Trailing by eight, 37-29 with 2:32 left, Army scored on a 27-yard pass to make it a two-point game, 37-35. The Black Knights went for the two-point conversion to tie the game but the rush attempt was thwarted by the Fordham defense, led by Marcus Fulmore and Niko Thorpe.

The game got off to an unexpected start for the Rams as Anderson fumble the first play from scrimmage, with Army recovering on the Fordham eight. Three plays later it was a 7-0 Army lead.

The Rams responded with a scoring drive with the big play being a 46-yard run by Edmonds to put the ball on the Army 22. Three plays later, Anderson took it in from the six to knot the game at seven.

The Black Knights scored on their next possession but Fordham responded again, moving 62 yards on seven plays with Edmonds covering the final 14 to tie the contest at 14 with 4:28 left in the first.

An 87-yard connection from Anderson to Edmonds early in the second quarter set up a 22-yard Makay Redd field goal, his first collegiate field goal, as Fordham took a 17-14 lead three minutes into the period.

Army West Point roared back, scoring on a 15-yard run, to take a 21-17 lead with5:10 left in the half but the Fordham offense responded with an eight-play, 85-yard drive, capped by an Edmonds one-yard plunge, to retake the lead, 24-21.

The Black Knights were looking to score before the half but JQ Bowers intercepted a pass for the Rams that was turned into a 27-yard Redd field goal as time expired and Fordham took a 27-21 lead at the break.

Both defenses tightened up to open the second half as each squad went three-and-out on their first possession.

Army‘s second drive of the second half ended after three plays and as the Black Knights attempted a punt, but the snap sailed over the punter’s head who ran it out of the end zone for a safety to increase the Fordham lead to 29-21.

Later in the period, the Black Knights scored on a one-yard rush and made good on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 29.

On the ensuing possession, the Rams moved from their own 18 to the Army West Point 10 where Edmonds took a handoff around the left side and to the end zone to give Fordham a 35-29 lead. The PAT snap was bobbled by holder Joe Pavlik but he wisely got up and ran to the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 37-29 Fordham lead with 12:04 left.

Later in the period, Army West Point scored on a 27-yard completion and then lined up for the two-point try that was turned aside by the Rams.

The Black Knights had one last chance for a win but a fourth down pass from midfield was incomplete with 28 seconds remaining and the Rams kneeled on the ball for the win.

Niko Thorpe led the Fordham defense with 11 total tackles, seven solo and one for loss, while Hodge added eight, five solo.

Fordham returns to action on Saturday, September 12, as they host the Villanova Wildcats on Jack Coffey Field at 6:00 PM.

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- The PSAL saw 5 contests in the Bronx during its opening week for Boys Varsity Football. Among the early Saturday contests, Cup Conference schools Adlai Stevenson Campus hosted Alfred E. Smith Campus.

Smith Campus took a first quarter 6-0 lead on a touchdown pass while Stevenson appeared shaky with multiple botched snaps from center, including one on a punt that led to a turnover on downs at midfield.

But Stevenson scored 30 unanswered points starting with a second quarter TD pass to tie the game and three touchdown runs in the second half.

Stevenson went on to win 30 - 6.

Week two match-ups in the Bronx are highlighted by a Saturday noon meeting between Dewitt Clinton and Abraham Lincoln High School.

Dream Achieved: the Major League Debut of James Pazos of the Yankees

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- The dream of every professional athlete is to reach the highest level of his/her sport. For a baseball player, the dream is to play in the major leagues. A 24-year-old pitcher for the Yankees, James Pazos, achieved that dream on Saturday.

Pazos was summoned from the bullpen in the ninth inning to pitch in a tight contest with the Tampa Bay Rays in front of 35,030 at Yankee Stadium. After the game, he told reporters, “The phone rang several times. Each time my heart sank and I lost breath. I was just excited to get into the game.”

The first batter he faced, pinch hitter Joey Butler, flied to center. Then Daniel Nava struck out looking.

Yankee skipper Joe Girardi then came to the mound to remove the rookie, who received a nice ovation from the fans. Pazos later remarked, “I didn’t expect anything like that.”

His first major league experience emotionally impacted him, “I’ve never seen the stadium before. It’s just an incredible day. I dreamt about it a long time. It’s always good when it goes well.” Girardi commented on the youngster’s performance, “He did a good job. He got his two outs.

Pazos was originally drafted as a teenager in the 40th round of the MLB First Year Player Draft by his home state Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009, but he did not sign. After his junior year at the University of San Diego in 2012, he was drafted in the 13th round by the Yankees.

The 6-3 left-hander began in professional career in New York City with the Staten Island Yanks that same year. In 28 relief appearances, he compiled an impressive ERA of 1.78.

He has pitched well in the Yankees farm system until being called up on September 1. He was a part of the team early in the 2015 Spring training as a non-roster invitee.

Regardless of what transpires for good or ill in the future, Pazos will retain the memories for his first major league experience at Yankee Stadium for many years to come.

Surge of Home Runs Bring the #Yankees Closer to First Place

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- Three home runs accounted for all five runs scored by the Yankees in their first game of the current 10-day homestand on Friday night. The 5-2 win over the Tampa Rays was the club’s sixth win in their most recent seven games.

Home runs were a major weapon in their recent success as they hit 15 in the seven contests, eight in the last two games.

A-Rod, dropped to fifth in the batting order after only hitting safely five times in his last 29 at bats, blasted his 27th homer of the season on the first pitch he saw in his first trip to the plate. The home run drove in the first two runs of the contest as Brian McCann was on first after drawing a walk.

Two innings later, McCann hit a solo home run off his “cousin” Jake Odorizzi. The Yankee catcher has hit successfully 11 times in 17 at bats with three homers and 10 RBI off the right-hander. The batter minimized his success by saying, “If you play long enough, you’re going to have success against somke guys.”

The third and final hit Odorizzi yielded was also a home run to rookie Greg Bird with one on in the seventh.

It was the rookie’s fourth homer and 14th RBI in his 19 big league games.
Another Yankee rookie, Luis Severino, who like Bird made his major league debut in August, has been a blessing to the Yanks. The Yankee starter won his third straight game by pitching a season high 6.1 innings. He gave up seven hits and only one run.

The run came on a homer by the Rays third sacker, Evan Longoria, his 15th at the current Yankee Stadium. He ranks second as a visiting player to only Jose bautista in number of home runs hit in the ballpark that opening in the 2009 season.

Severino’s catcher, McCann, was exteremly impressed by the young hurler, “He’s only going to get better and better.”

The victory of the Yanks coupled with Toronto’s 10-2 loss to Baltimore cut the Blue Jay’s advantage over the Yankees to 0.5 games in the tight pennant race that has one month remaining. An especially crucial series will begin on Thursday night when the Blue Jays visit Yankee Stadium to begin a four game series.

Exploding School Set to Reopen in Time for Class

Parents are concerned

By Robert Press

Despite the fact that 15 classrooms have been destroyed in a gas explosion, JFK high and the schools that make up the education campus are expected to open on time for class.

Two weeks ago a gas explosion ripped through the high school gutting 15 classrooms. It was later learned that a worker using a match to check for gas leaks caused the explosion. The injured workers are said to still be under going skin grafts at Jacobi Medical Center.

At a town hall meeting on the incident, education officials said that 15 classes on three separate floors were destroyed in the explosion. However, the officials insist that the school is structurally sound. Walls have been put up in the devastated areas to keep students out.

The 6th story science labs in addition to classrooms on the 5th and 7th floors are to be reconstructed sometime early next year when the work to be done is bid out and contractors are found.

A panel of experts who were sent to reassure the parents and others at the poorly attended Town Hall meeting announced that the 7 schools that make up the Kennedy Campus will open on the first day of school. This despite the gas explosion two weeks prior that has closed off 15 classrooms on 3 different floors of the building.

Mr. Welde of the Department of Buildings assured everyone that the building was structurally sound, and that the students would be in no danger in the building that would be open. Various member of the panel tried to assure everyone that students would not be able to enter the closed off rooms to be reconstructed, and that all other entrances to the building and all stairwells would be open. Also mentioned was that any construction work would take place after school hours, and that air quality testing would take place on a regular basis.

Some of the very few parents in attendance complained about the lack of notification process, and that the auditorium should have been overfilled with other parents, but that they were mot notified of the meeting. After hearing that the Department of Education was working with the United Federation of Teachers Union on the opening of the Kennedy Campus, one can only wonder why parents were not involved in that process.

Key protocols to combat Legionnaires’ Disease needed-lawyer says

By Michael Horowitz

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- A lawyer who specializes in Legionnaires’ Disease cases across the country has stated, that New York City and other municipalities need to develop specific protocols to stop the spread of the disease.

Jules Zacher, a single practitioner whose office is in Philadelphia, stressed, “There need to be specific protocols for sampling the water at cooling towers in New York City and across the country. These protocols are not now in place.”

Zacher explained, “All water has the Legionnaires’ Disease bacteria in it, but the bacteria only become threatening when the systems that use the water are not properly maintained.”

The lawyer said that it is incumbent upon New York City and other municipalities to have their personnel check cooling towers by taking samples on a regular basis.

“I am in the process of writing a white paper on possible protocols that New York City could adopt in legislation,” Zacher said. “I plan to contact Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz and key members of the New York City Council about my suggestions.”

Zacher stressed, “Most people who contract Legionnaires’ Disease are elderly or have compromised immune systems. Smokers are also at greater risk.”

The attorney explained, “What happens when someone contracts Legionnaires’ Disease is that the lungs become infected. The infection, if it isn’t properly treated, can affect the kidneys. Those who die from Legionnaires’ Disease usually do so when their kidneys shut down.”

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Two men and a woman, who say that they caught Legionnaires’ Disease in Co-op City, are suing the housing company and the former managing agents in the northeast Bronx community.

The litigants are among eight individuals with Co-op City connections who contracted Legionnaires’  Disease late last year.

An additional two Co-op City shareholders living in the same building, one in 2012 and the other in 2013, caught Legionnaires’ Disease, the city’s Health Department reported in March of last year.

Those suing include Ronald Hines Jr., a 29-year-old man from Co-op City, and Ralph Motta, a 44-year-old man who worked at the Bay Plaza shopping center, both of whom have been seriously debilitated. Neither Motta nor Hines has been able to work since being sickened by Legionnaires’ Disease in December, Bronx News has been told.

Catherine Durso, a Bronxite who visited Co-op City in October of last year, is also suing the Riverbay Corporation, Co-op City’s housing company, and Marion Scott Real Estate, Inc., the former managing agents for the nation’s largest housing complex.

Durso, like Hines and Motta, has had her lifestyle seriously compromised as a result of the severe form of pneumonia that she contracted, her attorneys claimed in a lawsuit that they filed on behalf of her and her husband.

The cooling tower at Co-op City was, late last year and early this year, contaminated by the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ Disease, the city’s Health Department officials said in January.

Since that time, Co-op City’s cooling tower has been decontaminated to the satisfaction of Health Department officials. The cooling tower at the Bay Plaza shopping center was also contaminated with the Legionnaires’ Disease bacteria in late 2014, before being decontaminated.

Despite assurances from Health Department officials, a number of Co-op City’s civic activists remain concerned about Legionnaires’ Disease, insisting that there could be additional problems with the community’s domestic water system, which carries water to Co-op City’s apartment through a series of pumps and connections that go from one floor to another in individual buildings.

Health Department officials have stated that they are confident that the Co-op City cooling tower was the source of the Legionnaires’ Disease, which eight individuals associated with the community contracted in late-2014.

Legionnaires’ Disease is not communicable, meaning it is not spread from one individual to another. Rather, the disease is spread through mists, such as those that can come from contaminated showerhead or water faucets.

 Cold-Blooded Slay Over Stolen ATV

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Zarnoff Taylor cared about his tricked-out all-terrain vehicle more than life itself. And as it turned out, more than the lives of the two men whom he suspected had stolen it.

Now, announced Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson, the 30-year-old Taylor will be spending the rest of his life with no possibility of parole for the murder of one of those men, and the attempted murder of the other.

After a two-week-long trial and just one day’s deliberation, on April 21st a jury found Taylor guilty of murder in the first degree (Class A-1 Felony) and attempted murder in the second degree (Class B Violent Felony).

On August 31st, 2015, he was sentenced by Supreme Court Justice John Carter to life without parole for the murder, consecutive to another 25 years in prison for the attempted murder.

Taylor's ATV was his pride and joy, the Yamaha Banshee’s tricked-out engine the envy of anyone who saw it. But when it went missing from the lot where he’d parked it, he and his buddies went looking. On April 16, 2010, Taylor brought 10 men in two vans to Soon Cycle on Ogden Avenue in the Mt. Eden section of the Bronx and found their suspects –
John Santiago (aka Juan Quinones)
and Jonathan Torres. Taylor kidnapped the two men at gunpoint, and drove them around for two hours, robbed them, beat them up and interrogated them, because he wanted to know if they stole his ATV.

Taylor found proof in their cell phones when he saw a picture of one of the two riding his bike.

He shot Santiago at point-blank range, but he wasn’t done with him.  As Santiago was bleeding out, Taylor drove around, and tried to find out where his ATV was. They drove clear across the Bronx, ending up in an industrial area near Co-op City, where Taylor forced Torres to carry the gravely wounded Santiago from the van.

Then Taylor shot Torres a half dozen times, and pumped yet another six bullets into Santiago. Somehow, Santiago survived, with surgery replacing nearly all his blood volume.  Torres did not survive.

Ironically, Taylor never recovered his stolen ATV.

One of the other men involved in
Taylor’s crime, Wader Mejia-Acosta, pled guilty in April to attempted robbery in the first degree and was sentenced to five years behind bars.  The other, Adonis Jimenez, pled guilty to attempted robbery in the second degree and was sentenced to four years.

Push to Ban K2 Online

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Stop selling dangerous synthetic weed online, a group of elected officials demanded.

State Senator Jeff Klein, joined by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, City Council Members Ritchie Torres, Dan Garodnick, Ruben Wills, CEO of ACI Chemical Dependency Treatment Centers Warren Zysman and Lewis Cruz, a Bronx father whose son is addicted to K2, unveiled an alarming investigative report, “The Online Smoke Shop,”detailing the cyber market for K2.

In light of this investigation, the legislators demanded that major sites, eBay, Craigslist and Backpage, remove all K2 and K2 paraphernalia from their sites, and sent letters to their CEOs on Thursday.

“I have a message for eBay, Craigslist, Backpage and other sites: It doesn’t matter if K2 is sold in the corner store or in cyberspace, you need to stop the proliferation of K2 and start policing your websites. My investigation found that the Internet is both a virtual bodega and a chemists’ web warehouse. Disturbingly, sites not only peddle K2 — but also the materials needed to make it. On eBay my investigation even turned up pre-branded bags that we’ve seen on the streets of New York as ‘jewelry bags.’ Selling drug paraphernalia is against the company’s policy and I expect eBay and other sites to stop aiding dealers,” said State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx Westchester).

“This investigation clearly highlights that access to K2 is just as easy to get by just a click of a button,” said City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito. “Synthetic marijuana is a dangerous, unpredictable and illegal substance, and for too long, unscrupulous stores and online marketplaces have profited by peddling these deadly drugs to New Yorkers. I’m proud of the work the City has done, at the urging of the Council, to aggressively tackle this issue and I thank State Senator Jeff Klein for his work on this report. I look forward to working collaboratively with our state legislators to put an end to this widespread problem.”

“The Online Smoke Shop: Buying K2 Online,” found a budding market for K2 and its paraphernalia on Internet classified and auction sites like eBay, Craigslist and Backpage, where direct dealers are posting ads geared toward New Yorkers.

On Craigslist and Backpage, sellers posted classifieds using keywords like, “K2 Spice,” “herbal incense,” “herbal potpourri,” and “legal weed.”

The postings discovered on Craigslist and Backpage lured consumers to direct dealer sites, where the same K2 found in New York shops is available for purchase online. Direct dealer sites sell the product to individuals and in bulk and ship in discreet packaging, the investigation found.

On Backpage, one dealer brazenly posted a cellphone number to text for synthetic marijuana.

Direct dealer sites found in the investigation peddled a vast array of K2, including popular brands like, “Geeked Up,” “Smacked!” “Scooby Snax,” and “Bizarro.” The sites popped up on major search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo! Search and Ask.com when users entered terms like, “Buy K2 Spice,” “Buy herbal incense,” and “Buy synthetic marijuana.”

Dealers on these sites claimed their product was legal, but did not list ingredients.

Disturbingly, on eBay a search for “incense bags,” yielded sellers of pre-branded, Mylar K2 packaging seen on the streets of New York. In one listing, 1,000 empty, pre-branded, “Geeked Up,” bags sold for $119.95. The posting claimed the bags — labeled 4 grams and potpourri — was for the storage of “coins, jewelry, crafts and incense.”

Worse, the investigation discovered online cannabinoid dealers selling toxic ingredients sprayed on plant matter to make K2 — even ones that were recently banned in New York State. Most of the online chemical peddlers operate outside of the United States, but are willing to ship illegal chemicals to New York.

“The growing popularity and availability of K2 is alarming and disturbing. The administrators of these online forums where K2 is so easily accessible must take proactive steps to combat this hazardous epidemic and protect its consumers. The fact that this substance is being marketed to especially appeal to a younger generation is a disgrace. These online forums must take responsibility for what is being sold on their platforms, and should take into consideration the safety and well being of their patrons above all else. Buying and selling a dangerous and toxic substance in simple online transactions is unacceptable,” said Assemblyman Gjonaj.

“K2 poses serious health risks and has already taken an alarming toll on our communities, yet as Senator Klein’s report shows, remains easily purchased online. These are dangerous drugs that should be fully prohibited from all forms of retail, period. I applaud Senator Klein and the Speaker for their leadership on this issue and together, we will take every measure to halt all sales of synthetic marijuana,” said Council Member Torres.

“I think eBay and Craigslist know that potpourri doesn’t usually come with rolling papers,” said Council Member Garodnick. “While we work on keeping local businesses from selling K2 on the streets, these websites need to partner with us and limit access on the Internet.”

“Any pipeline that would enable one to obtain synthetic marijuana and similar drugs must be choked off completely, and the proliferation of these substances in any domain will not be tolerated. Senator Klein and his staff are to be commended for the work they have done to spotlight this particular issue, as we coordinate an effective response to halt the further advance of these dangerous substances. We expect responsible business owners and E-commerce companies who value the public’s safety to act swiftly to prohibit the sale of synthetics via their sites, and those who permit trafficking to continue should consider themselves forewarned they stand to suffer immeasurable losses for their negligence,” said Council Member Wills.

“What I've personally experienced from watching my son while on K2 is not a very nice feeling. Actually, it’s very heartbreaking. K2 needs to be banned period. All it is doing is killing the insides of an individual little by little. The hospital emergency rooms are just filling up with people who have been using this stuff. The people who are manufacturing and selling K2 should be punished. We have to stop it before it reaches our younger children. I support Senator Klein’s legislation in making K2 illegal,” said Cruz, whose son is fighting a K2 addiction.

“An alarming number of patients being treated for K2 use and abuse at ACI Rehab located in midtown Manhattan are adolescents, ages 12 to 22. The accessibility on the Internet and local stores, low cost and catchy names, such as “Scooby Snax,’ ‘fake weed,’ and ‘moon rocks,’ make K2 an attractive choice for young people. K2 can have very harmful effects including hallucinations, paranoia, seizures and spikes in blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. The variability of the presenting symptoms and the fact that it does not show up on standard drug tests make K2 use and overdose challenging to diagnosis. Keeping drugs like K2 off the streets is another important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the war on drugs. I fully support Senator Klein’s legislation to make K2 illegal in New York State,” said Zysman, CEO of ACI Chemical Dependency Treatment Centers.

“Jeff Klein is taking the lead on a serious issue that has been growing for a number of years. There is an unfortunate false perception that these synthetic drugs are safer than traditional street drugs but this is straightforward exploitation of our youth. The use of cartoon characters and flashy marketing make it clear who their targets are. Also, Internet service providers at various levels are not always the passive hosts of the illicit activity. Some Internet services continue to accept advertising money from drug sales even after being notified. Proactive enforcement and public information can change that,” said cybercrime researcher Garth Bruen.

Senator Klein has introduced legislation to criminalize the sale of synthetic marijuana. A seller caught with over 16 ounces could face up to 5 ½ years imprisonment if his bill passes. He also proposed cracking down on businesses by stiffening penalties in New York State’s business law. A business found selling one time would receive a $2,000 fine. On the second offense, that penalty would increase to $5,000. On the third strike, a business would lose its cigarette, alcohol and State lottery licenses.

Senator Klein also would add an analog statute to the state’s controlled substances law, making any analog of a Controlled 1 or 2 substance illegal. While the State Senate has passed this measure three times, the State Assembly has failed to take action.

AIR QUALITY HEALTH ADVISORY ISSUED FOR NEW YORK STATE

Ozone Advisory in Effect for New York City Metro and Long Island
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Marc Gerstman and State Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner Howard Zucker, M.D., J.D. today issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the New York City Metro and Long Island regions for Wednesday, September 2, 2015.

The pollutant of concern is: Ozone

The advisory will be in effect: Wednesday, September 2, 11 a.m. through 11 p.m.

DEC and DOH issue Air Quality Health Advisories when DEC meteorologists predict levels of pollution, either ozone or fine particulate matter are expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100.  The AQI was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale, with a higher AQI value indicating a greater health concern.

OZONE

Summer heat can lead to the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of photochemical smog. Automobile exhaust and out-of-state emission sources are the primary sources of ground-level ozone and are the most serious air pollution problems in the northeast. This surface pollutant should not be confused with the protective layer of ozone in the upper atmosphere.

People, especially young children, those who exercise outdoors, those involved in vigorous outdoor work and those who have respiratory disease (such as asthma) should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when ozone levels are the highest (generally afternoon to early evening). When outdoor levels of ozone are elevated, going indoors will usually reduce your exposure.  Individuals experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing should consider consulting their doctor.

Ozone levels generally decrease at night and can be minimized during daylight hours by curtailment of automobile travel and the use of public transportation where available.

New Yorkers also are urged to take the following energy saving and pollution-reducing steps:

use mass transit or carpool instead of driving, as automobile emissions account for about 60 percent of pollution in our cities;
conserve fuel and reduce exhaust emissions by combining necessary motor vehicle trips;
turn off all lights and electrical appliances in unoccupied areas;
purchase and install energy efficient lighting and appliances with the Energy Star label; and
reduce or eliminate outdoor burning and attempt to minimize indoor sources of PM 2.5 such as smoking.
use fans to circulate air. If air conditioning is necessary, set thermostats at 78 degrees;
close the blinds and shades to limit heat build-up and to preserve cooled air;
limit use of household appliances. If necessary, run the appliances at off-peak (after 7 p.m.) hours. These would include dishwashers, dryers, pool pumps and water heaters;
set refrigerators and freezers at more efficient temperatures;
A toll?free Air Quality Hotline (1-800-535-1345) has been established by DEC to keep New Yorkers informed of the latest Air Quality situation.  Further information on ozone and PM 2.5 is available on DEC’s web site at http://www.dec.ny.gov and http://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/air/ozone.htm on the DOH website.

Air Quality Health Advisory regions consist of the following:  Region 1 Long Island which includes Nassau and Suffolk Counties; Region 2 New York City Metro which includes New York City, Westchester and Rockland counties.

Ten Years After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans Continues to Rebuild

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Never in modern times has an American city been lost, but that's exactly what happened to New Orleans in the wake of the "100 Year Storm," known forever as Hurricane Katrina.

My week long visit to survey and record the devastation is forever etched in my mind and the feelings of helplessness for the city and it's people has never completely gone away.

With the advancement of the relatively new technology of Google Maps, I took a handful of the 1,000 photographs and sought the same locations via Google for a then and now prospective.

The view of the New Orleans Superdome from atop US 90, looking across the flooded Poydras Street in Downtown New Orleans was simply heartbreaking.

The Bethany Lutheran Church that lost it's roof in the storm has been completely rebuilt, although noticeably smaller than what it once was.

Somehow The Delgado Community College Charity School of Nursing, under an estimated 6-feet of water was somehow salvaged, but a photo on Google Maps shows the back of the facility was still under construction as of last year-- 9-years after the storm.

The photos that bring home the power of that storm is a shot of a young animal rescuer sailing her boat across Industry Street at Spain Street in Roch, Louisiana. In the photo was home after flooded home, but pictures on Google Maps today show that there are just two homes on the street.

The Category 3 hurricane packing winds of up to 125 mph, made landfall on August 29,

Officials now say that 1.5 million people were evacuated from Louisiana and 1,836 died and 2,500 were missing from the affected states.

The damage was estimated at over $100 billion, by far the costliest disaster in American history.

Feds Crackdown on Online Juicing

DEA officials announced a nationwide series of enforcement actions targeting every level of the global underground trade of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, the vast majority of which are manufactured and trafficked from underground labs in China.

DEA-led Operation Cyber Juice comprised of over 30 different U.S. investigations in 20 states and resulted in the arrest of over 90 individuals, the seizure of 16 underground steroid labs, approximately 134,000 steroid dosage units, 636 kilograms of raw steroid powder, 8,200 liters of raw steroid injectable liquid, and over $2 million in U.S. currency and assets. In addition, DEA and its partners assisted in foreign steroid investigations in four countries coordinated by Europol. Domestic law enforcement partners include the Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

In Arizona alone, Operation Cyber Juice investigations yielded the seizure of four underground steroid conversion labs, the seizure of nearly 150,000 dosage units of finished product, 121 pounds of raw steroid powder, 22 liters of raw steroid injectable liquid, and over $300,000 in U.S. currency and assets.

Often found in these underground steroid labs are finished steroid product, raw steroid powder, oils needed for steroid conversion to a finished product, conversion kits, and other lab equipment. These products are commonly obtained via the internet from Chinese chemical manufacturing companies and underground labs.

“Too many young people are ruining their lives and damaging their bodies from steroid abuse,” said DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg. “Through Operation Cyber Juice, DEA is attacking the global underground steroid market, exposing its danger and lies.”

“This multi-agency collaboration sends a strong message to those who traffic in illegal and dangerous performance-enhancing drugs,” said Peter T. Edge, executive associate director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). “There’s no question that our joint efforts among HSI, DEA and Interpol targeting a very significant drug distribution network will have a huge impact on the distribution of illegal steroids and other dangerous performance-enhancing drugs in the United States.”

Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol, stated: “This international law enforcement action was accomplished through the cooperation of multiple agencies committed to the single goal of identifying and dismantling a lucrative criminal enterprise. Europol will continue its successful cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the World Doping Agency to eliminate this crime that spans across the globe and cyberspace”.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Travis Tygart stated: "In the global fight against dangerous performance-enhancing drugs, collaboration

between anti-doping organizations and law enforcement is vital. This joint investigation again demonstrates that we can work together to identify and hold accountable underground steroid suppliers and users who are committing crimes and who may  also be cheating clean athletes and sport. The actions taken today will help to ensure that all athletes are safer and any young athletes who are pressured to use these drugs to win in sport are not preyed upon by illegal drug dealers."

Furthermore, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Director General David Howman stated, “For a long time now, the World Anti-Doping Agency has been concerned about the illegal activity in some countries of underground production and trade of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. These substances, either as full steroid products or in raw material form, are being produced in unsanitary “underground laboratories” with no concern whatsoever given to the labeling of the products, nor to the health of the end user – quite often the athlete, and worryingly, very often young people. This problem is proliferating globally. It has become a public health issue and therefore requires an international solution through partnerships and collaboration. By partnering with USADA and the DEA in this major steroid operation, WADA has been able to prevent potentially harmful steroid substances from getting into the hands of athletes looking for an edge. This is a good example of anti-doping and law enforcement working well together to further their own efforts of reducing doping and protecting public health.”

There is great danger in buying steroids, chemicals, and other illicit products on the Internet. Many companies operating illegally both in the United States, China, and elsewhere have no regard for product safety and mislabeling is common – both intentional and unintentional. Products are often misrepresented, and their safety is not at all guaranteed. In addition, federal agents report that many of the underground steroid labs seized are extremely unsanitary, further illustrating the danger in buying these products illegally. For example, recent lab seizures uncovered huge amounts of raw materials being mixed in bathtubs and bathroom sinks.

Throughout Operation Cyber Juice, DEA and its law enforcement partners worked closely with both USADA and WADA, receiving actionable intelligence that resulted in many of these investigations.  This vision was to utilize law enforcement, anti-doping resources, and intelligence, to assist in furtherance of their respective efforts.  In addition, Europol analysts were collecting information and providing leads to participating countries for further investigation.

Previous DEA steroid investigations such as Operation Raw Deal in 2007 focused on raw material manufacturers and suppliers in China and other countries; underground anabolic laboratories in North America; numerous U.S.-based websites distributing materials, or conversion kits, necessary to convert raw steroid powders into finished product; and Internet bodybuilding discussion boards that are the catalysts for individuals to learn how to illicitly discreetly purchase and use performance enhance drugs, including anabolic steroids.  Many of the underground steroids labs targeted in this case advertise and are endorsed on these message boards.

Anti-Violence Group Hosts First Annual Peace Walk

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK (BRONX NEWS)- Celebrating their first anniversary at combating the violence that continues to plague the streets of the Northeast Bronx, members and supporters of Stand Up to Violence (SUV) held their First Annual Peace Walk on Saturday, August 22.

The event kicked-off with a breakfast held at the office of Community Board # 12, followed by a march from East 229 Street down White Plains Road to East Gun Hill Road. A rally at the Williamsbridge Square on East Gun Hill Road was followed by a Family Day gathering at Mazzei Playground located at Williambridge Road and Mace Avenue.

With funding for SUV secured by Senator Jeff Klein and the New York State Senate, with assistance from SNUG, a program funded by the New York State Department of Criminal Justice and based out of Jacobi Hospital, Pastor Jay A. Gooding, Sr., of the Fellowship Tabernacle Ministries of East Gun Hill Road declared the pilot program a success.

Pastor Gooding told the crowd, "Let me just share with you a few of the statistics over the last 12-months. In our target area where SUV has been, there has been a reduction in shooting's of over 40%."

Gooding continued, "We now have 52 young men that are being mentored by outreach workers, over 30% of them are now working."

According to Gooding, over the past year SUV has participated at 63 community meetings and held 16 events of their own in neighborhoods like Wakefield and Allerton where shooting's seem to be an almost daily occurrence.

Senator Klein, a sponsor of the New York Safe Act, explained, "We actually took a stand that were not going to tolerate gun violence anymore," by banning assault weapons, high velocity magazines and taking guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Gooding was correct that the 47th Precinct reported a 45.9% drop in shootings, but failed to mention the fact that in the first eight-months of 2015, the NYPD reported six fewer homicides than the previous year, with 7 killings compared with 13 in 2014.

You're not stealing his sandwich. A Subway employee fought off a would-be robber in Hunts Point and it was all caught on camera.

At around 9:21 a.m. on August 22, the suspect walked into a Subway sandwich shop at 1047 East 163rd Street.

To the astonishment of workers he walked behind the counter and proceeded to take money out of the register.

The video then shows the suspect rolling over the counter in fear. The store employee is seen swinging a bat or metal pipe at the thief causing the thug to flee.

Time Running Out for NY Soccer Fans

Time Running Out for NY Soccer Fans

By Howard Goldin
BRONX, NEW YORK (SPORTS)- Experienced NYC goalie Josh Saunders recently spoke of the crucial nature of the result of each match as the regular season nears its end, “It’s a playoff mentality. It’s essentially do or die every game.”
This is especially true for the expansion club that represents New York City, NYCFC (7-13-7). The club has loaded up with international superstars such as David Villa, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo. The three designated players are experienced in the highest levels of international competition, but are among the older aged players in the league.
The expectations on the club and from its fans have obviously been too high because of the acquisition of these international stars.
NYC coach Jason Kreis spoke about the newcomers after Saturday’s home loss to the Columbus crew SC, 2-1, “It’s unfair. They think [fans] we are supposed to win because of high paid and high profile stars. Not enough credit is given for how difficult it is. Expansion teams are set up not to succeed.”
One of new but experienced players, Andrea Pirlo of Juventus in Italy admitted problems that exist, “We have to try to improve. We have to not repeat the mistakes that allowed us to lose this game. We don’t do team play very well because we don’t know each other well.”
Before Saturday’s match with the Columbus Crew (11-8-8), Kreis stated his club’s plan, “We have to take these eight games one at a time. We have to put all of our focus and energy into this first game. It’s critical we get three points at home.”
His club lost the first of the eight and end points even more desperately if they are to qualify for the playoff. After this weekend’s loss, he said, “We need to win every game. We have seven games and 21 points available.”
The teams that competed seem to be traveling in opposite directions in the MLS standings. Columbus has won five games and drew in two of their last eight contests while NYC has won only two and drew one of their last eight matches. They are not compiling the points necessary to move forward into playoff contention.
A sell-out crowd of 30,018 attended the match on Saturday afternoon. The fans are still coming to Yankee stadium in large numbers. The next game at the Stadium will take place on Wednesday night, September 16.
