Quest for 3000

Quest for 3000

A-Rod milestone awaits another night

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 19- Like it or not, depending on your feeling about Alex Rodriguez and his year-long suspension from baseball due to using performance enhancing drugs, but career hit number 3,000 is near and it will probably come Friday night in the Bronx.

A milestone for A-Rod that very few have achieved and you have to dig deep into the Yankees media notes to get the vital statistics. That’s another matter for another day because the Yankees will have to acknowledge the hit when it comes.

But Thursday night, with A-Rod at the plate in the eighth inning, and one hit shy of making history, the Yankee Stadium crowd anticipated the moment. They, as they have always done this season, stood and cheered Rodriguez as the cameras were ready to take photos and videos as he stepped to the plate.

Except they were disappointed, as were the media in the press box because Marlins’ reliever Sam Dyson did not cooperate by issuing four inside pitches for a ball. When Rodriguez went to first base the fans continued to show their displeasure at Dyson for not making them witness baseball history because A-Rod awaits another night to become the 29th player to get 3,000 career hits.

Dyson, if you can believe it, said it was more important to get the out, that it was more of an incentive to get A-Rod out. He claimed to not hear the fans and could care less about history. Perhaps that can be believed but the Marlins at that juncture were trailing by six runs and Dyson gave up four, all earned.

“I don't even know how to describe it," Rodriguez said about the cheers and fan support. "It feels good. Every time moments like that happen, I can just take a moment to reflect that a year ago today. Their support has actually helped me play a lot better."

The year ago was reference again to his suspension, and to many skeptics another milestone to them does not belong in the record books.

But, in all due respect to Alex Rodriguez, he has gone with the plan and been the team player. There has been no wrong statements, and his answers to the media have been about appreciation and not about himself. Reaching this milestone does not have an impact that Derek Jeter received when he hit the 3,000 plateau, then again there is no comparison when  it comes to A-Rod and Jeter.

Rodriguez had an impact in the Yankees 9-4 win over the Marlins getting two hits that made that eighth inning at bat one for drama. That first hit drove in a run that got him closer to the milestone and added to his record career RBI total.

Manager Joe Girardi was also hoping the hit would come. “Was hoping to get it out of the way,” he said. “He will get another opportunity tomorrow. Think the crowd wanted to see it. I an understand. Dyson was trying to get him out.”

But those fans, many who won’t be in the Bronx Friday night, wanted to see a hit and not a walk. This was not one night they cheered for A-Rod as they have been in his corner all season.  And Girardi, when asked, once again became the philosopher regarding the fans and how they have supported Rodriguez, who is having a comeback type first half of the season.

“Fans just want to see the players do well,” he said. “I think it's the society we live in. Most people will pull for your own team, no matter what the situation is and people want to see people come back. Giving people second chances. Most people in this room have made mistakes. One thing about Alex you see him get better everyday and he loves the game. The guys in that room respect him,” referring to the support A-Rod has received from his teammates.

Girardi added, “People are appreciative of what he has done for our club this year and how he’s helped us with winning.”

It also helps that the Yankees won again, that CC Sabathia threw the ball well and did not get the decision despite pitching six innings on three hits, and not issuing a walk for the fifth time this season. Carlos Beltran finally heard some cheers and put the Yankees ahead with a two-run homer in the seventh.

But the night was all about Alex Rodriguez and his quest to 3,000 hits. He surpassed the quest of having the fans in his corner, and it can only get better when he gets the milestone hit in the Bronx and continues to help the Yankees get wins.

Tennis Center Opens Field of Dreams

By Michael Horowitz

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 17- For benefactors Skip Hartman, Larry Leeds, and Tory Kiam, the opening of the $26.5-million Cary Leeds Center for Tennis and Learning was a dream-come-true following an effort that spanned more than a decade --- an effort to popularize tennis in minority communities in the south Bronx and other parts of the city.

For retired City Clerk Carlos Cuevas, former Mayor David Dinkins, and Lorraine Rohlsen-Alexander, vital senior citizens who have been trailblazers in the effort to bring tennis to black and Latino youngsters, the opening of the tennis center in the south Bronx represented a highlight achievement in careers of activism over the last four decades.

For Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who helped to cut the ribbon signifying the opening of the tennis center, the facility served to reinforce the view that the south Bronx has bounced from the time, in the 1970s, when the burning of buildings symbolized the borough’s deterioration.

The opening of the tennis center, which will feature 20 courts, 10 of which will be enclosed, represents the best that can be achieved in partnerships between public and private donors.

The opening of the center was celebrated at a gala held at the center, a two-story facility that is located within Crotona Park, a 127-acre landscaping achievement that is located in the heart of the south Bronx.

The tennis center, which Hartman conceived and developed under the auspices of the New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL), will serve an estimated 30,000 youngsters in the Bronx with free tennis instruction and a variety of after-school activities that will include help with homework and the opening of new vistas for youngsters served by the organization that tennis great Arthur Ashe and Hartman started in 1969.

The center is named in honor of Cory Leeds, a world-class tennis player whose life was cut short at the age of 45.

Cory’s father, Larry, a successful businessman who has made his money in the fashion industry, said that his involvement in the tennis center, which featured a personal monetary contributions and involvement in major fundraising efforts, was a way of creating something lasting and meaningful that will forever be associated with his son and the importance of tennis in his life.

Cuevas, a long-time activist with the NYJTL, stressed, “Even at this stage of my life, I play tennis two or three times a week. The new tennis center will introduce children to a lifelong sport that will influence their lives in more ways than they can imagine.”

Dinkins, who played a key role in the opening of the city’s major tennis center in Flushing, Queens, during the time he was the city’s mayor, “This new center is a splendid part of the New York Junior Tennis League. Thirty thousand kids live in walking distance from this wonderful new center. It is a tribute to what Skip Hartman and the NYJTL have accomplished.”

The former mayor added, “Some of the youngsters who are exposed to tennis through the Bronx center will go on to become world-class players, while others will get college scholarships. More importantly, tens of thousands of youngsters will become better people as a result of their exposure to what this new tennis center has to offer.”

Rohlsen-Alexander, who founded the Co-op City Tennis Club with her late husband, Milton, 40 years ago, stressed, “This new tennis center is impressive and awesome. It is a kick in the behind to uplift Crotona Park and the neighborhoods that surround it. It represents a culmination of efforts by many of us to bring tennis to youngsters in the inner city."

NYCFC : Victorious at Yankee Stadium

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 15- NYCFC began its match with the Montreal impact on Saturday night at the pitch at Yankee Stadium mired in last place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points, the lowest total of All 20 clubs in the MLS.

Despite that negative, the coach and players realized that a win would net them three points and tie them with thee two clubs above them in the standings, the Montreal Impact and the Chicago Fire. A victory would also give them their first two‐match winning streak in their short history. The Impact also came into the match with a high degree of self‐confidence as they had won their last two matches and four of the past five.

That statistics tell the definitive story of NYC’s offensive thrust early in the contest. During the first half, the home team kept possession of the ball for 64.3 percent of the time and had an outstanding percent of passing accuracy of 81.1 percent contrasted with 67.4 percent for the Impact.

In the 32nd minute, the inevitable happened, Spanish superstar David Villa scored he first goal of the match on assists from Mehdi Ballouchy and Patrick Mullins. NYC’s veteran goalkeeper Josh Saunders noted, “They [Impact] got frustrated a little bit when we got the goal.”

Although Villa’s goal was the only score in the first half, Long Islander Chris Wingert commented on the early offensive play of his team, “This week, we came out on the front foot and put them [Impact] under it. Our best defense is our offense.”

NYC did not dominate the stats in the second half, but managed to add to their lead in the 76th minute as two newcomers to the match combined to produce the next goal. Ghanaian Kwadwo Poku, who had entered the match one minute earlier, fed the ball to U.S. international Mix Diskerud who scored. Diskerud, who scored for the USMNT earlier in the week, remarked, “It’s fun to represent your country and beat two of the best teams in the world. When you score goals, you feel like you can do it more often.”

Diskerud had only entered the match 11 minutes before he scored the goal. Team captain Villa said of his U.S. teammate, “Mix is a fantastic player. He was tremendously helpful to us.”

Each team each scored a goal in the final two minutes for NYCFC to achieve a final victory of 3‐1 and add three points to their season total.

Riverdalians Rock Out Riverfest

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 15- Residents celebrated Riverdale's beautiful waterfront with music at the annual Riverfest event.

State Senator Jeff Klein, joined by Congressman Eliot Engel, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Councilman Andrew Cohen  Executive Director of the Kingsbridge-Riverdale-Van Cortlandt Development Corporation (KRVC) Tracey

McCabe Shelton, KRVC Greenway Director Cliff Stanton, President of the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dr. Charles Flynn, and local families and children, hosted beloved American music group Blood Sweat & Tears at RiverFest on Sunday.

“RiverFest is a tribute to the strength and solidarity of the Riverdale community, bringing together friends and family to celebrate the beauty of the Hudson River and relax and enjoy the summer season,” said Klein. “I’m proud to have secured Grammy award-winning music group Blood Sweat & Tears to headline RiverFest 2015 and I commend KRVC for their efforts in putting together this special event. RiverFest also underscores the importance of the Hudson River Greenway – a vital,  innovative community project that would increase access to the waterfront for countless residents of the Northwest Bronx. Thanks to everyone who came out and I look forward to working together as we transform this vision of an accessible, waterfront greenway into a reality for our families and communities.”

Blood Sweat & Tears is best known for their chart topping hits like “Spinning Wheel,” “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” and “Hi-De-Ho.” In 1969, the band’s first self-titled album Blood Sweat & Tears went on to sell more than 3
million copies and won the Grammy Award for album of the year. In 1970, at the direction of the U.S. State Department, Blood Sweat & Tears completed a goodwill tour of Romania, Yugoslavia and Poland. The band has since performed sold out shows all over the world, and is widely recognized as one of the most beloved American music groups of all time.

“RiverFest has grown into one of the premiere events here in Riverdale – by highlighting all of the incredible natural beauty and fantastic local businesses our community has,” said Congressman Eliot Engel. “Every year RiverFest gets bigger and bigger, and this year with ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’ performing this was our best event yet. RiverFest is fun for the whole family, and I’m glad everyone came out to enjoy this wonderful day.”

“Since it began, RiverFest has been an incredible gathering for our community, getting better and better every year, and I always look forward to it,” said Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz. “There is no better way to spend a beautiful summer day than having fun together with your community while listening to great live music.”

“RiverFest is an event I look forward to each summer because it brings the community together at one of the most beautiful locations in North Riverdale, the campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent,” said Council Member Andrew Cohen. “With activities for all ages, sail boat rides along the Hudson, booths for local merchants and much anticipated musical performances, Riverdale’s RiverFest was the highlight of the weekend. RiverFest also plays a vital role in building support and momentum toward the Greenway, something members of our community have been looking forward to for a long time. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have dedicated so much time and effort to make this event the huge success that it is.”

RiverFest 2015 featured performances by Seeing Voices, The Traveling Jewburys, Mark the Harper, Riverdale
Rising Stars, Sara Bouchard & the Salt Parade and more. Families and children had the opportunity to learn more about Riverdale’s waterfront community through an array of fun, engaging exhibits. Children also enjoyed face painting, arts & crafts, and games and activities provided by the Bronx Children’s Museum.

RiverFest participants included: the Bronx County Historical Society; Friends of Van Cortlandt Park; Jewish War Veterans; Kingsbridge Historical Society; Part of the Solution; Riverdale/Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture; Riverdale Neighborhood House; Riverdale Rotary Club; Sierra Club and the Wild Dog Foundation and more.

"Senator Klein has once again demonstrated that he fundamentally understands what makes a community vibrant and strong. Through his consistent support for KRVC and by bringing Blood Sweat & Tears to RiverFest, the Senator has moved the vision of a Hudson River Greenway in the Bronx closer to a reality. We applaud Senator Klein's leadership on this issue and commitment to support his work and the work of other community leaders in the days and years to come,” said Cliff Stanton, Greenway Director, KRVC.

"We are thrilled to have this fabulous addition to our RiverFest. It truly enhanced an already special community event. With more people than ever before attending our festival,  this great concert allowed us to reach more people with our message of how spectacular an all-riverfront Greenway will be for our community. We are very grateful to Senator Klein for making this all possible. We look forward to supporting and working with the Senator and our community leaders through all the steps we need to take to make the Hudson River Greenway a reality for The Bronx,” said Tracy McCabe Shelton, Executive Director, KRVC.

Tough Guy Gunman Found Cowering Under Car

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 13- A gunman proved that he's not so tough without his Glock.

At around 1 a.m. on June 13, officers from the 45th Precinct Anti Crime Unit were canvassing the Zerega Avenue in response to a person shot.
The cops observed a male walking at Westchester Avenue and Rowland Street. When the man spotted the cops in the car he fled toward Tratman Avenue.

The officers exited their vehicle and followed the suspect on foot. Cops say the suspect then turned and opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun. Cops returned fire without striking the gunman. The suspect's gun jammed in the chamber so he dropped it and fled.

Other responding officers found the suspect hiding under a car in front of 1439 Zerega Avenue.
Cops later recovered a .40 caliber Glock 23.

Construction Comes to End at Filer Plant

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 12- The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEP) quietly sent out a press release in May that stated that construction was nearly completed and the Croton Water Filtration Plant was now online-- but have refused to respond to repeated requests for additional information.

A source at Councilman Andrew Cohen's office reported, "There is still some work going on, but a large majority of that work is over and the plant has been activated and the walls are being taken down... we were just made aware that they activated the facility."

Calling it the largest such plant in America, the press release stated that the plant will filter as much as 290 million gallons of drinking water each day.

With the completion of the $3.2 billion project, water from the Croton water supply system was reconnected to the city's distribution network for the first time since 2008. The new plant is expected to provide 30 percent of the city's current daily water consumption.

Work on the 400,000 square-foot plant began in 2004 and at the height of the project, 1,300 laborers were employed at the site

In the press release, DEP Commissioner Emily Lloyd stated, "The filtration plant will help ensure the city has a safe and reliable supply of drinking water in the event of future drought."

Lloyd added, "All New Yorker's should raise a glass of New York City tap water today and recognize the thousands of workers who have contributed to the completion of this critical facility."
