Yankees continue to get the unexpected on the mound

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 9- If this becomes a continued and successful stretch run to the post season for the New York Yankees it will be credited to the unexpected who get the ball. With four-fifths of a starting pitching rotation injured, the latest acquisition made by GM Brian Cashman shined Friday night in the Bronx.

Esmil Rogers, acquired days after he was released by the Toronto Blue Jays, was the latest Yankees pitcher who has seemed to fit right in along with the Cashman signees of Brandon McCarthy and Chris Capuano. The 28- year-old, right-hander had a 5.84 ERA when he took the mound against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium Friday night.

Yet, that ERA must have been in another era. Because similar to the brief success of McCarthy and Capuano, Rogers for the moment looks like a good find. The Blue Jays put him on waivers and the Yankees claimed him the last day of July, though Rogers was not expected to be a starter.

With David Phelps unexpectedly going on the 15-day disabled list, manager Joe Girardi and the powers that be needed another starter. Rogers was available after making two relief appearances.

So in the category of don’t you know with the Yankees, a season of ups and downs, Rogers gave more than was asked for. The 5.0 innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits, and striking out three was more than you can ask for in the Yankees 10-6 win over Cleveland.

A longtime scout sitting up in the Yankee Stadium press box said Rogers had the right velocity on the fastball, and that the curve was locating. After a shaky first inning where he threw over 28 pitches, and yielded a run Rogers settled in.

Girardi had pinpointed 100 pitches for Rogers who threw 45 in a start with Toronto.  He threw 88.

"This is what we have seen from him," Girardi said. "I just wasn't sure how much he would give us. I think we were pretty conscious of watching that his stuff continued to be sharp as his pitch count went up. He did a great job. There was a reason that we went and got these guys.”

Referring to McCarthy and Capuano, and now Rogers, Girardi said, "We felt that they could help us. They have pitched extremely well. I'm not sure any of us knew what to expect, but if you looked at, since the All-Star break, we have had a chance to win every game and that is because of them."

“I didn't have my confidence like I have right now,” Rogers (2-0) commented. He became the 12th pitcher to make a start for the Yankees. McCarthy, Capuano and the rookie Shane Greene all had quality starts against the AL central leading Tigers this week.

Rogers has the confidence, so does McCarthy who has won four straight since joining the Yankees and makes his sixth start Saturday afternoon. Capuano also seems to be comfortable and in the right situation. There is that overall attitude that the Yankees have turned this around and the winning will continue.

This was not supposed to be the makeshift pitching staff in place of CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova, Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda and Phelps.

And all of s sudden the Yankees may have an excess in the pitching department with Pineda expected to return sometime next week after going down with an injury to the right shoulder in early May.

Girardi may have decisions to make, so will Cashman if this unexpected pitching continues to give the Yankees innings and length. That can’t hurt down the stretch as the Yankees are playing their best baseball of the season. They are seven games over .500 for the first time and 14-7 since the all star break.

Rogers was more comfortable with a nice lead. Girardi said again that getting runs makes it easier for the pitchers. Derek Jeter tied Honus Wagner for sixth place on the career list with his 3,430th hit in a five-run first inning and Carlos Beltran drove in five runs and hit a grand slam home run.

“It’s always good that there are players that can make the ballclub offensively and defensively better,” Beltran said.

And for the Yankees, the unexpected that are on this ballclub now are getting it done.

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 8- During the last four games, the Yankees held the highest hitting team in the American League, the Detroit Tigers, to six runs. They also won three of four games against a starting rotation that included three former Cy Young Award winners.

The finest pitched game occurred in the final game of the series on Thursday afternoon between Rick Porcello of the Tigers, the only non-Cy Young winner who started for Detroit in the series, and rookie Shane Greene, who was making his sixth major league start. The two put zeroes on the scoreboard in every half-inning with only one exception.

The pitchers’ duel between the starters lasted seven innings as Porcello was replaced by reliever Phil Coke at the start of the eighth. The righty yielded nine hits, hit one batter, but issued no walks during his seven inning stint. The only frame in which he was unable to blank the Yanks was the fourth.

In the third and sixth innings the Yankees threatened as two batters singled, but each rally was stopped by a double play. Yankee manager Joe Girardi gave credit to the Detroit starter for quashing the threat, “He has the ability to get the double play. He’s a complete pitcher.”
With two out, three successive Yankee batters, Carlos Beltran, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew, singled. Drew’s hit drove in the only run of the game. The run batted in was the sixth for Drew who only joined the club one week earlier.

Yankee newcomer Headley, who joined the Yanks on July 22, praised the man who became his teammate nine days later, “I’m really proud of the way he’s [Drew] stepped up for us.”
The newest Yankee position player is happy to be wearing pinstripes, “It’s just a lot of fun to be a part of this team. I think things are going to work out well.”

In his post-game press conference, Girardi recognized publicly the improvement in the club’s play thanks to the new additions to the lineup, “The additions have been huge and that’s why we’re winning. It’s definitely been beneficial to us. It’s changed the complexion of the game.”

Another first year Yankee, Greene, pitched the best game of the series and the best in his short career in the majors. He went his deepest in a game, one batter in the ninth inning, without giving up a run. After the game, the Florida native felt great by being allowed to remain that long, “Obviously, I wanted to get the guy out [Ian Kinsler singled to lead-off the ninth], but they gave me an opportunity. It’s awesome.”

The 25 year-old only surrendered five hits and three walks while blanking the Tigers. He felt his best pitch during the contest was his sinker, “I was keeping it down a lot.” Girardi only had positive words regarding his performance, “He did everything he could to beat a very good team. His stuff was excellent all day.”

Rookies have, thus far, taken up the slack for the injured starters. They have started a major league high 50 games and the Yanks have won 31 of the 50.

On Friday night, Esmil Rogers is scheduled to be the 12th different Yankee pitcher to start a game in 2014. Trevor Bauer is set to be the starter for the Cleveland Indians who will begin a three game series in the Bronx.

Yankees win another from the Tigers CY Young trio and then there is Capuano

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 7- It was the first time a team has faced the last three CY Young Award winners three straight games. And the New York Yankees were not intimidated in the Bronx this week facing Max Scherzer, David Price and Justin Verlander Wednesday night. It was supposed to be a mismatch and like a good prize fighter the Yankees have prevailed.

Verlander may not be as dominant with the fastball. Chase Headley and Brian McCann hit solo home runs off  the

2011 Cy Young Award winner, two of his five hits in seven innings. Chris Capuano is the other story for the Yankees, their acquisition before the non-waiver trading deadline who has quickly adapted to being in Yankees pinstripes.

Yet, Capuano was not supposed to be the better pitcher Wednesday night in the Yankees 5-1 win over the Tigers. He is one of 11 pitchers to make at least one start for the Yankees this season and has become an unexpected boost to a pitching staff that has been decimated with injuries.

With a series finale Thursday afternoon, the Yankees have a chance to take the four-game series. Forget the Cy Young Award Trio theme of this series, because if the Yankees win the finale they definitely are serious contenders to make this an interesting stretch run for a spot in the post season. Again they will be the underdogs, opposing Rick Porcello who is tied for the league lead in wins with 13.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was not surprised. He has seen the Capuano fastball get better, even as the left-hander struggled last year with the Dodgers, and earlier this season before he was released by the Red Sox.

"I’ve seen him do this before,” Girardi said. "And that was one of the reasons we went and got him. If I'm not mistaken, he did it to us last year here. So I mean, he does know how to pitch, and he gave us a great performance tonight. He knows how to change speeds. He knows how to move the ball in and out.”

Capuano had a better curveball than Verlander, and his changeup was just as effective. It has been the fastball that was losing some momentum, though it has been a pitch that has improved in the last year.

The fastball had a velocity and location that confused reigning two-time AL Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera, swinging at a third strike leading off the Tigers sixth inning. Capuano would strike out four of the next seven he faced. After two consecutive strikeouts in the seventh, Capuano yielded two singles and his night was over with the score tied so he did not get the decision.

He tossed 7-0 innings and struck out eight in his third start as a Yankee, and the eight strikeouts were his most since August 17, 2012 against the Braves when he was with the Dodgers.  To say the least, with Michael Pineda almost ready to return from another long stint on the disabled list, Capuano is surely going to be in the mix to get more starts.

Why not? He is a veteran and the Yankees took their chances. He has proved to be that worthy commodity and as the Yankees know, you never have enough pitching. He gave up an unearned run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings and walked one.

The 35-year-old Capuano was picked up from Colorado this past month, after his brief stint with the Red Sox. He got a standing ovation when he left the mound.

“Kind of have to reset the button and go back to basics but to get a chance to be here and play for these guys, it’s great,” Capuano said about putting on the pinstripes. “I was scheduled to be on a plane to go to Denver, I get the call and two days later I was pitching at Yankee Stadium.”

He added, “It’s been exciting. Having the fastball and having the command makes a difference.” It helps that he is on the right team. Boston and Colorado are rebuilding for next year and the Yankees are in the thick of a wild card race, and the division crown is still within reach.

He faced Verlander who has been struggling with an ERA over 4.00. This was supposed to be a mismatch and Capuano had the better command. "Justin maybe didn't have quite the velocity on his fastball, but he was really pitching tonight,” Capuano said. “He was making great pitches all night. It was big to win that game and have a chance to win the series tomorrow."

It also helps that Capuano now has an all star commanding center field. Jacoby Ellsbury preserved a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning taking away an extra base hit from J.D. Martinez with a leaping catch in front of the Yankees bullpen in right that ended the sixth inning.

“Pure joy,” Capuano said with a smile. On this night, the newest Yankees pitcher looked like the Cy Young Award winner.

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 6- National Night out in the 50th Precinct may not have had the local elected officials that came out last year, but hundreds of people (mostly children) came out to enjoy the night out that took place on Marble Hill Avenue Between West 225th and West 230th Streets.

On hand was State Senator Guistavo Rivera who is still expecting a tough primary,

but he also said we will know Thursday if the challenge against his opponent Councilman Fernando Cabrera has been successful in getting Cabrera knocked off the ballot. Senator Rivera mentioned that several dead bodies were believed to be on the Cabrera petition, and that with other questionable items may allow him not to have a primary, but he said we will have to wait until Thursday to find out. Senator Rivera also mentioned that a planned debate on Bronxtalk would be cancelled if he has no primary.

David Price the Tiger saw a different Yankees team this time in the Bronx

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 6- David Price, the former Tampa Bay left-hander, was in the Bronx facing the Yankees again Tuesday night. This time he made his debut on the mound with the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers and nothing changed but the uniform. Same results, as the Yankees got to Price early and he settled down striking out ten leaving after 8 2/3 innings with a 3-3 tie.

The win did not go to Price who had won his last four decisions at Yankee Stadium, the last one on July 1 when he

pitched seven innings in a Tampa Bay 2-1 win. Detroit on a solo home run from Alex Avila in the 12th inning defeated the Yankees 4-3.

It’s a part of baseball. Players come and go all the time, even at the trading deadline. Price, last Thursday was the story of the non-waiver deadline period when the Tigers got another CY Young Award winner to join a pitching staff that already has two, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander in a three-team deal.

“A little weird, probably helped that I faced them multiple times,” Price said about getting a start against the Yankees in a Tigers’ uniform. Last time, Alfonso Soriano was in the Yankees lineup, always a tough out and Yangervis Solarte was at third. This time there were the trading deadline acquisitions for the Yankees, Martin Prado and Chase Headley.

Just like the Tigers, Yankees GM Brian Cashman went to work at the deadline and made some minor acquisitions that have become major in making the Yankees an improved team in their pursuit of becoming one of two wild card teams, or making a run at the divisional crown.

"Happy it's over, and happy we won," Price said. "Finally feel part of the team. The mound is still sixty feet away from home plate.” Prado got to Price in the fifth inning, a long home run to left field off a 2-0 fastball. It was the first Yankees home run for Prado, playing in the outfield where Soriano once was.

To the Yankees, Price was no different. He had a nasty changeup and for the exception of another home run, a solo shot to right in the second inning from Brian McCann, the Tigers are now aware they have what they want, another ace that will hopefully propel them to go far in the post season come October. It was the third home run McCann has hit off Price this year.

"He really looked exactly like he did in Tampa, except he had the Tiger uniform," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.

With Price now a Tiger, the Yankees are the first team according to the Elias Sports Bureau facing the last three Cy Young Award winners in three straight games.  And, Price became the first Tigers’ pitcher to strike out at least ten hitters in his debut without a walk.

“The changeup has come a long way for me the past year and a half and has opened doors for me and getting better,” Price said.  It was his 84th appearance and 83rd start against a team from the American League east where he has posted a 43-16 record with a 3.00 ERA.  So Detroit, with post season ambitions, went out and got a pitcher they needed, one that fairs well against the division when and if they face a team from the east in October.

For now though, Price, in the few days he has been with the Tigers, is enjoying the adjustment of being with new teammates, and in a new uniform.  It is a part of baseball.

“Go have fun every single day,” said Price. “You lose fun then it becomes a job.”  Well said, because Tuesday night it was a job for Price, but you can tell he was having fun.  It will become more fun, indeed if Price becomes that major cog in a pitching rotation that may be the best three in baseball.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, “Price pounds away.” For the Yankees, who lost a tough one in extra innings, they may have to face Price one more time this season when they visit Detroit for three games later this month.

And that won’t be fun as they are now in a competitive race for that wild card.

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 5- Although the Detroit tigers are comfortably ensconced in first place in the American League Central, they have only won 8 of 18 games after the All-Star break. During that same period, the Yankees are 11-6.

Max Scherzer, the Detroit starter, threw the 11th quality start (at least 6 innings with 3 or less runs scored) in the team’s last 15 games. Despite pitching this fine a game, the first American League pitcher to win 13 games this season could not record his 14th victory on Monday. The loss broke his five game winning streak.

The reigning Cy Young winner gave up four singles in the third inning which accounted for the only two Yankee runs of the contest. Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single. The next two batters, Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter, also singled to fill the bases. Jacoby Ellsbury drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. A one base hit by Brian McCann brought the second Yankee run in.

Scherzer left the contest after the seventh inning having yielded nine hits, the two runs and three walks. Yankee skipper Joe Girardi commented, “They’re [great pitchers] not always going to be perfect. I thought our guys just put good at bats, had a good approach and made him work.”

By fanning four in the game, Scherzer reached his 1,000 strikeout as a Tiger, tying Joe Coleman for 15th place in Tiger history.

Yankee starter Brandon McCarthy kept his perfect record in pinstripes intact, moving to 4-0 by earning the win. He has won his last six decisions in his last seven starts with an ERA of 2.09. His current streak is an amazing contrast with his performances during the early part of the season when he won only one of his first 16 starts. Of the change in teams, McCarthy remarked, “It’s been exciting {playing in a pennant race]. It’s like going to a new high school. It’s [the transition] been very smooth.”

McCarthy only gave up one unearned run in the fifth. Eugenio Suarez was safe on an error by third sacker Martin Prado. He stole second, but suffered a left knee strain that caused his removal from the contest. The pinch runner, Andrew Romine, scored on a single by Ian Kinsler.

McCarthy only yielded five hits and two walks while fanning eight in 5.2 innings. He said his only disappointment was “not getting into the seventh. I didn’t realize I threw so many pitches [116]”.

The Yankee bullpen held the Tigers scoreless for 3.1 innings. David Robertson recorded his 30th save. He has been successful in his most recent 18 save opportunities.

The one run victory increased to 15 the number of consecutive games in which the Yankees have played that have been decided by two runs or less. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that is the longest number of such close games played in succession by the New York franchise.

Burglars Washed-up After Laundromat Heist

Suspects Eyed in 33 Similar Break-ins

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 4- Three men have been charged with the break-in of a Norwood laundromat-- and cops say the trio are headed for the rinse-cycle as they are being eyed in 33 similar jobs from Manhattan to Westchester.

Residents say a small army of police on the ground and a helicopter overhead, converged on the Spin City Laundromat at 345 East 204 Street at just before 3 a.m. on July 31.

One police source reported, "We responded to a burglary here last night. It was apart of a pattern-crime (and) who were responsible for 33 similar break-ins from Yonkers to Manhattan."

The officer smiled before adding, "And we arrested them last night."

The thieves apparently targeted the store's Automated Teller Machine, which they cleaned out all of its $10 bills. The burglars also removed the surveillance camera tapes from inside Spin City as well as emptying a change dispenser.

The owner of Spin City, who purchased the popular business three months ago and who declined to be identified, recalled, "I came to open the store this morning and found police here waiting for me."

The owner said the perpetrators created a 2-foot hole in the back of the store, where he claimed the previous owner had cheaply boarded up a window.

A second police source stated that the trio arrested had been under surveillance when police pinged the suspects cell phone at the time of the heist.

Police charged Miguel Rodriguez, 34, of Beekman Avenue in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; Juan Perez-Portez, 41, of nearby University Avenue and Porfirio Sanchez-Javier, 27, no address given. All three were arraigned the following day and charged with burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal mischief-- all stemming from the most recent incident.

According to the Bronx District Attorney's office Rodriguez' bail was set at $1,000 while Sanchez-Javier and Perez-Portez were released without bail and were due back in court on August 5.

Officially, the NYPD has refused to comment on any additional charges or pending cases against the three suspects.

Customers at Spin City were turned away for much of the day, while one angry customer argued with police about not being able to get his clothes.

"Your not getting your clothes, it's a crime-scene," one detective told the agitated customer who abruptly walked off.

A longtime worker at Spin City said as she watched police as they looked at evidence inside the store, "I don't want people to be scared to come here, I want the people to come back."

The two NYPD sources both think the trio are behind a string of similar heists that apparently date back to October, 2013.

In an April 25 break-in at the Inwood Deli, thieves cut a 2-foot hole in the wall of an abandoned building before getting away with the store's ATM cash, the store's computer hard drive with the security footage of the robbery-- and this time added baby formula to the growing laundry-list of charges.

BRONX, NEW YORK, AUGUST 4- Members of NYPD, elected officials, friends and family members gathered at the corner of Ely Avenue and Adee Avenue, Bronx, to rename the intersection “Sergeant Keith A. Ferguson Way” in memory of the Bronx NYPD sergeant who died while rushing to the assistance of a fellow officer.

Council Member Andy King presented a City Council Proclamation to the family at the ceremony.

Sgt. Ferguson died on Jan. 1, 2004, after suffering a heart attack while running to assist an officer who was chasing a suspect.  Sgt. Ferguson, a 17-year member of the New York Police Department, was on patrol in lower Manhattan as part of the NYPD anti-terrorism unit when he heard a foot patrol officer calling for assistance. According to reports, the officer chased a suspect who he had attempted to arrest.

Sgt. Ferguson responded to the scene, but his vehicle got stuck in heavy traffic. Sgt. Ferguson exited his vehicle and began to run to the location where the officer needed assistance. When Sgt. Ferguson arrived on the corner of Broadway and Grand  Street, with several other officers who had responded to the call, he collapsed onto the trunk of a vehicle.

Sgt. Ferguson's partners gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions while racing to St. Vincent's Hospital Center. Doctors there were unable to revive Sgt.  Ferguson.

In June 2005, Sergeant Ferguson was posthumously awarded the New York City Police Department's Purple Shield Medal. The Sgt. Keith A. Ferguson Memorial 5K race takes place every 1st Sunday in August across the Brooklyn Bridge.

New Skate Park For Norwood

Riverdale Report
By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 30- Last week Councilman Andrew Cohen, along with Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte, Community Board 7 Parks Committee Chair Barbara Stronzer, CB 7 District Manager Dustin Engelken, and dozens of local skateboarders took the first step in creating a new skateboard park area in the Williamsbridge Oval in Norwood.

Councilman Cohen announced that he has allocated $750,000 of capital expense funds for the construction of this skate park in the Oval. Bronx Parks Commissioner Aponte said “NYC Parks is appreciative to council member Cohen for this allocation towards building a new skate park in the Williamsbridge Oval. Cohen said that the skate park had been a request of Community Board 7, and Norwood residents for quite some time. This idea goes as far back as 10 years ago, and after the project was supported by CB7 it will now become reality he added. The expected date of the first shovel going into the ground however could be years from now as the Parks Department is so backed up from projects from the Croton Filtration Plant mitigation money. Some projects that were to be finished years ago are still on the drawing board. Go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com to read more and see a photo of everyone at this announcement.

This past Saturday night the movie Frozen was shown in Seton Park in Riverdale by KRVDC with help from State Senator Klein. Almost 400 people were on hand including Councilman Andrew Cohen, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Community Board 8 Chair Dan Padernacht, Senator Jeff Klein, and even Senator Klein's opponent for the September Democratic primary former Councilman Oliver Koppell. The forecast of rain held off, and everyone had a cool time. You can go to my blog and check the KRVDC listing in the archive on the lower left to see what other upcoming events that KRVDC has lined up for you. More movie nights and two street festivals.

Otherwise things were very quiet this past week in the Jeff Klein/Oliver Koppell 34th State Senate race, and it was to quiet if you ask me. Senator Klein touted out several more union endorsements while challenger Oliver Koppell touted the endorsement of the Amsterdam News, an upper Manhattan newspaper. There is however always next year for Koppell, as I told him Saturday night. Next year will be the race for Bronx District Attorney. Koppell is certainly qualified for Bronx DA having been state Attorney General before. I said to then Councilman Oliver Koppell at the 2011 Bronx Democratic County Committee Dinner that he would make a great candidate for Public Advocate. By the way Oliver I missed you at this year's Bronx Democratic County Committee Dinner last week.

Finally it looks like the summer street repaving is starting in Community Board 8 as a few streets are being milled down and repaved. One such street is Bailey Avenue between the Van Cortland Park Avenue exit off the Deegan Highway and West 238th Street where the new BJ's shopping center is scheduled to open soon. I wonder if that is so the trucks can get to BJ's on a smooth road that didn't need to be repaved? Now if only the city can fix and repave the real streets that need it since the Con Edison street construction has done a great job of helping to ruin many of the streets.

31st Annual National Night Out Against Crime - August 5th

By Bill Ludwig

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 28- The 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime will be held on Tuesday, August 5th.

The 47th Precinct & 47th Precinct Community Council will be holding NNO activities from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Grenada Place between Ely Avenue and Laconia Avenue, across the street from the Precinct. This year's theme is “Respect Your Neighbors - Think Quality of Life!” The opening ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m.

Deputy Inspector Ruel Stephenson and Community Affairs Officers David Belle and Jay Soto have planned an enjoyable afternoon and evening for children and adults. Our elected representatives have been invited. There will be representatives at tables from New York City agencies, and other organizations who will be giving out valuable free information. Refreshments will be served. For children's activities there will be rides and games. There will also be entertainment for the community to enjoy.

This year's slogans are: Say No To Drugs, Help Unite Our Community, No All Night Parties, Talk to Your Neighbors, Love Your Block, Do Not Block Your Neighbors Driveways, No Loud Music, and A Quiet Neighborhood is a Good Neighborhood. Bring the family out, learn about crime prevention, and have fun at the same time.
So, what exactly is NNO? It is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). The NATW is a nationwide organization dedicated to the development, maintenance, and promotion of community-based, law enforcement- affiliated crime prevention activities.

NNO is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods "celebrate" NNO with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police, parades, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs. An event doesn't have to be big or elaborate. It can be as simple as having a conversation in a neighbor's yard. The important thing is to talk to your neighbors and plan to get together. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. More than 37 million people are expected to participate in various anti-crime programs and activities this year.

Remember, the key to participating in NNO is: turn your outside lights on, come outside to meet your neighbors, and participate in your neighborhood's special events. This way you can be a part of the nation's largest annual crime/drug prevention event on Tuesday evening, August 5th.

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 28- Police were hot on the trail of the gunman who opened fire on one man and wounded two innocent bystanders after an afternoon shooting on a busy street in Parkchester.

Police were called to 1525 White Plains Road at Archer Street at just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.

According to one police source, the intended target was an unidentified 21-year-old male who was shot in the knee and buttocks.

The unintended, collateral damage was a 40-year-old woman who was hit in the foot and a 60-year-old man who took a bullet in each of his legs. All three were transported to Jacobi Hospital and were expected to recover.

Police shutdown a portion of the block and many were not allowed to return to their homes until detectives examined the evidence left at the scene. Investigators examined more than a dozen shell-casings and a bloody woman's shoe-- left in the entrance to one of the buildings.

A young woman answering the phone at Little Treasures Daycare, directly across from the shooting scene stated that many people hang out in front of the buildings where the gunfire erupted, but could not say if any crimes or drug dealing were being committed.

The woman explained, "We're in the basement, so we don't see what's going on."

Police have no suspects at this time, but were believed to be looking at surveillance video from no less than three cameras pointed directly at the shooting scene.

According to the latest statistics available from the NYPD, there were 25 people shot between January 1 and July 20, up from the 19 people shot in the same time period in 2013.

Back on February 19, three people were also shot along Morris Park Avenue at White Plains Road after another brazen gunman opened fire, hitting his two teen targets
outside a discount store.

But the gunman also struck a 79-year-old woman in the hand, in the barrage.

Yankees Win Again; Yanks 6-Jose Bautista 4

By Howard Goldin

Bronx, NY---The Yankees are moving upward in the standings during their current homestand. They have won seven of the last eight games. The 6-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night put them in second place in the American League East, one game in front of Toronto. The Yankees have come from behind in their last five wins.

Many in the ballpark expected to witness a pitchers’ duel with Mark Buehrle starting for Toronto and Hiroki Kuroda for New York. Those expectations were not met by the starters as the Yankees were leading 6-4 at the end of three innings. Both teams’ relief staffs were outstanding. Not a run was scored against any of the relievers.

In six innings of relief, the Toronto pen gave up only two hits, no walks and fanned six. The Yankee relievers, in 3.1 innings, also yielded only two hits, no walks and struck out three. David Robertson earned his 26th save.

Veteran Carlos Beltran praised both the starter and the relievers, “He’s [Kuroda] a veteran. Even when he doesn’t have his stuff, he’s able to compete. I attribute where we are to Betances and guys like that.”

Buehrle has been one of the best pitchers in MLB during the past 15 seasons. He has 19 victories, 10 in 2014. He entered the game on Friday with an ERA of 2.86, 8th best in the league. He set a MLB record by retiring 45 consecutive batters in 2009.

He has been a very different pitcher when facing the Yankees. He has compiled a 1-12 mark in 19 starts against New York. He has yet to win a game in Yankee Stadium, but lost his sixth game there on Friday. His three inning stint was the only one of his 21 starts this year in which he pitched less than five innings.

Derek Jeter, to the delight of the large crowd of 44,237, got the first Yankee hit of the game in the first frame.

Two Yankee runners crossed the plate in the second. Brian McCann led off with a single. Chase Headley followed with a single. A walk to Ichiro Suzuki loaded the sacks. The first Yankee run scored on an infield single by Brian Roberts and the second on a sacrifice fly by Brett Gardner.

Two long balls drove in four Yankee runs in the third. With one out, Carlos Beltran hit his 11th home run of the season on a 2-1 pitch. McCann and Headley each singled again and Ichiro followed with a home run to right. It was his first of the season and followed 294 homerless at bats.

Ichiro was greeted in the dugout by a silent Jeter. After the game, the Japanese native joked, “He always does something special. I thought he would do something like that.”

Of the two homers, Yankee skipper Joe Gorardi remarked, “They just got good pitches to hit, right there in the zone.”  When told that Ichiro has a .431 batting average against Buerhle, he stated, “He sees him well.”

Headley, only a Yankee since July22, had three hits on Friday. He again remarked of his joy being a member of the Yankees, “It’s a privilege putting on the pinstripes. When you walk in this stadium there’s energy.”

Toronto’s four runs were all driven in by Jose Bautista with two home runs, his 19th and 20th of this season. Interestingly, all four of Bautista’s hits off Kuroda have been home runs.

Supermarket Blaze

By David Greene
BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 25- A stubborn early-morning blaze slightly injured 3 New York City firefighters and a toddler and a supermarket that had served a community was destroyed.
Officials say more than 200 first-responders were called to the blaze at the Food Dynasty Supermarket at 862 Hunts Point Avenue at 12:32 a.m. on Friday, July 25.
Police evacuated two 6-story buildings on either side of the burning one-story building that would spread to 5-alarms. Firefighters were expected to remain on scene for the rest of the day.
A 2-month-old child from one of the neighboring buildings was removed by paramedics and was treated for smoke inhalation at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. The child's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
Four firefighters were also treated for minor injuries.
Fire department sources say the blaze was immediately labeled, "suspicious" due to the high volume of fire. Fire marshals were on the scene and were already working to determine the fire's origin.
Residents say the Food Dynasty was a needed resource to the community, but noted their are two other supermarkets in the area and will be an "inconvenience" to many.

Tarp Gate

Who's to blame when Mother Nature was the story in #Yankees rain-shortened win over Texas

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 24- Brett Gardner was ready to take his turn at bat in the New York Yankees fifth inning. And then Mother Nature went to work. But the umpires were fooled as the deluge and winds had a field day with the tarp and Yankees grounds crew in the Bronx. From there it was a bizarre hour and 49 minutes of good theatre at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

The umpires could not play with Mother Nature, and in the end there is no telling as to who made the bad call about not getting a tarp on the field in time. There was the ugly forecast of heavy storms approaching. The umpires and grounds crew have sophisticated radar in place, as good as the pitching coaches have radars on opposing hitters.

And for 13 minutes, the grounds crew could not keep up with the winds and torrential rains that resulted in an infield that resembled “Noah’s Arch.” No way, the game could be resumed with the Yankees leading the Texas Rangers 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Yankee Stadium infield was not a “Field of Dreams.” The warning track areas, as good as the drainage system is, not playable. So, what do you do?

This is where it got interesting, and in the end, who is to blame for a rain shortened Yankees win? Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Rangers’ manager Ron Washington had more concern about the infield track and how unplayable it was. The worst case scenario was seeing one of their players go down with a hamstring injury because the infield was still not playable.

After all, this is not sandlot baseball that is played daily across the street at Legends Field. This is Major League Baseball, and with advanced technology to prepare on time for an upcoming storm, the tarp should have been on the field and the issue here would be about the game and not who was to blame.

And the Yankees grounds crew, they get the accolades for battling a stubborn tarp. They deserve the applause trying to get the infield back to playing shape, earning their money and spending over 45-minutes using every ounce of that sophisticated drying agent to make the field playable.

However, all the manicuring and water absorbing was not good enough. The managers huddled around home plate, up the first base line, and so did the umpires.

"Ron Washington said he thought a hamstring would be blown and I said ‘I question if this is safe for our players. Is there anything you could do to firm it up?'," Girardi said. "There were spots in the infield that you could see this much dirt would come up very easily."

They waited, and most of the 37,585 had more common sense and left the ballpark. There may have been that proverbial “Window”they talk about in baseball, the rain letting up and the game will resume. But the radar showed more rain was on the way as they played the waiting game with hopes the drying agent would sink in and dry the field.

The umpires called headquarters in New York for a decision. The Yankees have more to play for as the Rangers are looking at next year, but every game as Major League Baseball mandates, should try to be completed. The areas where turns are made were unplayable and the tarp was on the field again as light rain resumed.

With the tarp covering an infield needing attention, it became that more difficult to be a playable field that turned into mud.

Dale Scott the umpire crew chief had this to say:"Both managers had concerns about injuries, hamstrings, that kind of stuff. It would be really bad if we started playing and somebody blew out a knee or a hamstring or whatever because of that."

“Been through a lot of crazy things over the years,” Washington said. He did not put the blame on the umpire’s possible late call for the tarp. And certainly the grounds crew could not be faulted because too much water on the tarp made it impossible to move..

Alex Rios, who got one of five Rangers’ hits off Yankees starter and winner David Phelps said it was one of the most unusual rain delays he has encountered in his career, but the decision to no longer play was the right move. When the tarp was first removed, and as the grounds crew did their best, Rios and most of his teammates huddled by the dugout as starting pitcher Yu Darvish took some warm up tosses and hoped for the best.

The outfielder commented, “When I went through the infield it was very wet, guess the outfield was just as wet. You don’t want to get the players injured.”

In the end though, Mother Nature helped the Yankees this time. The last game before the all-star break at Baltimore, the Yankees waited two hours as the game was called in the fifth inning because of rain and they got a loss.

“Always if it’s a win," Girardi said about the rain helloing his team this time. But, as always he was logical about a bizarre evening in the Bronx. "Neither one of us can really afford anyone else to go on the DL because of conditions that players shouldn’t be on.”

THE GAME: Gardner hit a fastball off Darvich into the right-field seats in the third inning, his 10th of the season that gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead… Chase Headley acquired Tuesday from San Diego got one of four Yankees hits with a two-out double to the right-center gap in the second inning, his second hit in five at bats as a Yankee…

Phelps (5-4) recorded his first complete game of the year and Yankees starters have allowed four or fewer runs in each of their last nine games…. The Rangers have lost 15 of their last 18 road games…. Yankees trail first place Orioles by three games in the Al east with the finale of the four-game series Thursday afternoon and looking to take the series.

Former Fordham Ram Martinez returned to the pitching mound in the Bronx

By Rich Mancuso

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 23- Three years ago Nick Martinez was spending time as a second baseman and came out of the bullpen up at Rose Hill for Fordham University. Then the Texas Rangers gave him a call as their 18th round pick in the June amateur draft. Tuesday night he was on the mound at Yankee Stadium getting the start for the Texas Rangers.

It was a homecoming of sorts. The 23-year old right-hander from Hialeah Florida visited the new Yankee Stadium in his senior year at Fordham. Scouts said he could fit in the plans for the Rangers, and at the time the organization was loaded with good pitching.

So, a little past 7:20pm, and three years after coming out of the pen up at Rose Hill, Martinez threw his first pitch as a professional in the Bronx. It was low sinker and outside to Brett Gardner that went for a single to left. Derek Jeter followed hitting into a ground ball double-play and Jacoby Ellsbury lashed a 92-mile fastball to left for a single.

Then the curveball was thrown, one that helped Martinez get to this point, and Carlos Beltran ended the inning with a force that went second to short. After that hit to Ellsbury, Martinez retired 12 consecutive Yankees, and that was impressive being this was his first start coming off the 15-day disabled list because of discomfort on his left side.

“Going out and sat on the bench a little bit it just sank it in,” Martinez said, hours after he was lifted from a game that almost lasted five hours and went 14-innings in a game the Yankees won 2-1.

Martinez, 1-6, with a 5.10 ERA, held the Yankees for 5 1/3 innings on three hits and a walk. Manager Ron Washington made the pitching change after a walk to Gardner and after throwing 68 pitches, and of course he did not fair in the decision.

“His mechanics started to break down,” was the explanation from Washington about removing Martinez with a low pitch count. But, there was more of a concern that his pitches did not further aggravate his left side.

Martinez has a future and that was the reason the Rangers grabbed him after a successful scholastic and playing career at Fordham. He had allowed 10 earned runs in his previous 7 1/3 innings over two starts and retired 14 of the last 16 Yankees he faced in the game.

It resulted in his first career start without allowing an earned run, and the first by a Texas pitcher this season not allowing an earned run since Yu Darvich against the Twins on June 28th.

He said, “I thought my fastball was elevated a bit. I got away with that….things to expect first time out in three weeks. I understand. I did have to tighten up and focus. I didn’t feel tired and exhausted. Again, I haven’t pitched in three weeks so you have to play it safe.”

New Guy Wins it for Yankees

Walk-Off Single by Chase Headley in First Game as a Yankee

By Howard Goldin

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 23- A beautiful pitching duel between two rookie starters, Nick Martinez of the Texas Rangers and Chase Whitley of the New York Yankees and continued by a phalanx of relief pitchers by both teams kept runs off the board for 12 innings.

After the pitchers stifled every rally before a run could be scored, a run for each club was scored in the 13th frame. There was no rally in the top of the inning. One swing by first sacker J. P. Arencibia lifted the ball into the left-centerfield stands to put the first run on the board and emotionally deflate the excited fans still in their seats.

The base hit by Arencibia was the first by the Rangers since Adrian Beltre’s lead-off single in the seventh inning.

Brett Gardner led off the bottom of the inning with a double. With one out, the man who can do no wrong, Jacoby Ellsbury, drove in the run that tied the score. The run batted in was Ellsbury’s fifth in the first five games of the current home stand.

Two newcomers who were appearing in their first games as Yankees were the heroes.
In the 14th, Jeff Francis, the seventh and final reliever of the game for the Yankees, entered the contest. Francis had been acquired Oakland on July 11. The veteran of 11 major league seasons was appearing in his first game in pinstripes. He had last pitched in a game on July 2. Twenty days later, he kept the Rangers scoreless for the inning and earned the win. Despite the 20 days between games, Francis told reporters he felt in shape to play, “I did what I needed to do to stay sharp. I don’t feel I’m behind.”

The Yankees bullpen did everything possible to give the Yanks an opportunity to obtain the victory. The seven relievers pitched eight innings and gave up only one run and four hits.
The Yankees put together their final and winning rally after the second seven inning stretch of the conterst. Brian Roberts hit a grounds rule double into the stands in right. Francisco Cervelli singled, moving Roberts to third. Chase Headley, who had been acquired earlier in the day from the San Diego Padres for fellow third sacker Yangervis Solarte, singled to end the game and put the Yankees in the winning column.

Yankee skipper Joe Girardi described Headley’s arrival during the game, “Chase came into the dugout at 7:30 or 7:40 and introduced himself.”

Headley’s first game as a Yankee was his 909th as  major leaguer. He explained his emotions, “I’m just trying to do my job and become a part of this franchise. It’s great to be a part of a pennant race.”

The game that seemed it would never end, saw 37 players used and took 4:51 until it was over.
