School's Open 'Be Very Careful'

Riverdale Report
By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 13- Thursday September 6th was the first day of school. If you live near or around a school you had to be very careful of the onslaught of additional cars on the streets near and around schools.

Since last week was the first two days of school, it seemed that almost every parent drove their child/children to school. Living near PS 24 and MS/HS 141 that was exactly the case around these two schools. While one local Riverdale newspaper took pretty pictures of the children going back to school, I on the other hand took pictures of cars around the schools. My pictures were that of double parked cars, some where the driver/parent went into the school building with their child/children. Some area residents had to wait over 20 minutes for the driver/parent to return to their cars to move the illegally double parked cars, and one resident was on an emergency call to a hospital. Pictures of cars making illegal u-turns crossing over the double solid yellow lines on Independence Avenue.

The Parents Association of PS 24 illegal stop sign on Independence Avenue at West 235th Street, that was taken away last year. By the way almost half of the cars the two mornings did not come to a complete stop at the real four-way stop sign at the corner of Independence Avenue and West 237th Street. Why all of a sudden is there so much traffic at these two schools, even though the number of school buses keeps increasing every new school year? I noticed Monday morning that only a few problems occurred by PS 24, as I found out that there was no buses for the kindergarten children on the first two days of school. However the problem still continues in front of MS/HS 141 as the parents are not setting good examples for their children and others.

Speaking of traffic jams, since the Con Edison workers returned to work, Verizon is laying new Fios infrastructure in the streets, and a major project to replace a water main that runs from the Jerome Park Reservoir to Riverdale (among other emergencies that happen) the local streets are becoming battlegrounds for drivers and their cars. however go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com to see photos of the intersection of Broadway and Van Cortlandt Avenue to see how Con Ed, Verizon, and the Department of Design and Construction are working together at that intersection. While DDC is removing the old water main Con Edison is upgrading its gas lines, and at the same time Verizon is installing new Fios infrastructure. This sounds like a great idea since the roadway only gets torn up once.

Listed right under the Broadway Construction item on my blog you can find the latest week of events going on at Wave Hill for September 20th - 27th . Also don't forget this Saturday September 15th is “Movie on the River Night” at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on their “Great Lawn” located at Riverdale Avenue and W.261st Street. The movie title is “Night at the Museum” and starts at 8 p.m. The following Saturday September 22nd the movie “The Incredibles” can be seen in Indian Field located at Van Cortlandt Park East and West 233rd Street Woodlawn (no time was listed).
