Young woman killed crossing Concourse

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 20- A young woman who was a deaf mute was tragically struck and killed as she crossed the busy Grand Concourse as she was sending a text message.
Witnesses and acquaintances stated that the 29-year-old mother, only known by her first name Melanie, was crossing the Grand Concourse at E. 198 Street at about 10:30 p.m., on Friday, August 31, when she was struck and killed by a livery taxi.
According to one witnesses who declined to be identified, stated, "The light was green but the girl was deaf so she couldn't talk or hear and she was texting on her phone."
The witnesses continued, "The cab driver was honking his horn but she was deaf and didn't realize it and he hit her head on. The car was totaled."
Witnesses say police had suspected the driver was on the phone and doing more than the 35-mile-per-hour limit on the Concourse, but the driver was not taken into custody.
The witnesses explained, "The police were saying that he was probably on the phone, but they didn't arrest him."
Neighbors say that the young woman was from Long Island and had moved into 2860 Grand Concourse about a year ago.
Neighbors stated that the young woman suffered severe head trauma and her heart stopped beating the following morning.
Grieving friends setting up a memorial for her outside her building stated that she left behind a 6-year-old daughter.
One friend stated, "She was well known and well liked by everyone in the neighborhood. Everyone was in a state of shock."
Residents say a man on a scooter was struck at the same intersection the following day, but survived.
Officials at One Police Plaza had no record of the incident so an
official request would have to be made before the information could be obtained by Highway One, who investigates all fatal crashes.
Meanwhile, the NYPD is looking for the hit-and-run driver who ran-down a 24-year-old man at the intersection of Webster Avenue and E. 189 Street, on Saturday, September 15, leaving the still-unidentified victim in critical condition.
Using surveillance video, police would track the vehicle and later discover the abandon 2001 Volkswagen Passat at a parking lot at Webster Avenue and E.198 Street. Police continue to investigate.
