2nd Straight Walk-off Win for #Yankees

Yankee fans at the Stadium on July 3 and/or July 4 enjoyed an exciting game in which their team won the contest in their final inning at bat. 

Michael Pineda helped the Yankees to their third straight victory with an outstanding pitching performance in the July 4 matinee. The right-hander surrendered a double to the final batter he faced, Curt Casali, who led off the eighth frame. Prior to that batter, Pineda had retired the previous 12 straight batters. The Dominican native gave up zero runs for the only the second time in 2015. He held the Blue Jays scoreless in eight innings on May 5.

Pineda exhibited excellent control of his pitches, walking one batter and fanning 10. It was the second game this year in which he struck out at least 10 batters. Pineda is fifth in the American League in strikeouts per nine innings (K/9IP) and is second in MLB in K/BB ratio. Only Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals has a higher ratio of strikeouts to walks. Even though Pineda did not receive the win, he was pleased with the result, “I want to help my team. I’m happy today because we win. I’m focusing on the team.”

The Rays rookie starter, Nathan Karns, also pitched outstandingly in his seven inning stint. The righty equaled Pineda by only yielding five hits and fanning 10 batters, his career high. Yankee skipper Joe Girardisaid of the rookie, “He has been tough on us. He’s pitched pretty well all year long.” 

The two runs off Karns came from singles by the first three Yankees batters, Brett Gardner, Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s single knocked in his career 2,015 run. The sacrifice fly by the next batter, Mark Teixeira, accounted for the second run in the frame. Teixeira leads the A.L. in RBI with 59.

Despite their excellent performances, neither starting pitcher was involved in the decision. With DellinBetances on the mound for the Yanks, “Yankee killer”James Loney led off the ninth with his second single of the game. Loney has the second highest batting average in the current Yankee Stadium, .411 (44 for 1070. Steven Souza, Jr. flowed with his 15th home run of the 2015 campaign on a 2-2 pitch to knot the score at 2. Yankee receiver John Ryan Murphy said of Betances, “Any time a man gets on base [against Betances] it’s shocking.”

The disappointment for the Yankee fans in the ballpark was short-lived as the Yankees achieved the walk-off win before one out was recorded in the bottom of the same inning. Teixeira led off the frame with a double. He was pinch run for by Jose Pirela. Ramon Flores,who was recalled by AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre o0n the previous day, bunted and Tampa pitcher Brad Boxbarber made a throwing error that gave the Yankees the winning run.

In the final game of the three game set on Sunday afternoon, Ivan Nova will make his third start of the season for the Yanks against rookie Erasmo Ramirez of the Rays.

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 4- It is early July and the New York Yankees know games against AL East division teams will be significant. The one played against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday night in the Bronx, won by the Yankees 7-5 on a walk-off home run in the 12th inning from Brian McCann, can be considered important.

And in the words of Brett Gardner, to the Yankees it was “the biggest win of the year by far.” It was a comeback win in July Bronxnews

that is seen with a tight pennant race in September, and the way this division race is materializing a win like this one could mean a lot when the last few games are played.

The Yankees scored all their runs on the home run ball, Mark Teixeira hit a game tying three-run shot to right in the eighth inning. They had to wait a few extra innings for McCann to display the fireworks with another long shot to right that put his team, at least for the moment in first place.

“It was one of the best feelings you can possibly have,” McCann said about his seventh career walk-off hit and third as a Yankee. And it was a dramatic home run, because the Yankees have not had a walk-off win since the final home game of last season when Derek Jeter got the winning hit in his Bronx finale.

McCann added, “A big spot like that against a team in our division, It’s a great feeling.” 

The division, as it stands now, could go down to the wire. That is why the Yankees fought and had that never quit attitude, and it also helps that their home ballpark is built for their home run hitting team. The Yankees hit a lot of home runs, second in the American League, and have homered in 29 of 36 home games.

“Good way to start the homestand against a division team,” manager Joe Girardi said. After his team completed a 3-4 road trip at Houston and Los Angeles, Girardi said the division games would be important because the race for first place would not be decided until those last days in September.

And what helps more, as the first half of the schedule concludes, is that his team has a majority of games remaining in the 

Bronx, 36 of their first 80 have been at Yankee Stadium. 

The home run and walk-off win put the Yankees a game ahead of the Orioles. and two games in front of the Rays and Toronto Blue Jays in the division.

And home cooking was good for the Yankees Friday night. They could not reach Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer again. MThe right hander, third in the AL among earned run average leaders, came into the game 5-0 in seven career starts against New York, but he failed to become the seventh pitcher since 1914 to begin a career against the Yankees at 6-0 or better,   

Archer did not figure in the decision after allowing no runs, three hits in 6.21 innings and tossing a career high 122 pitches. However it was his 11th quality start and if it were not for the home run ball by Teixeira, his 20th off a 1-0 fastball from Kevin Jepsen, Archer would have added to his win mark.

“it was a battle,” Archer said. “They have a good lineup and know how to work counts.” Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka, with the exception of giving up two runs in the first inning, threw the ball well and avoided a third straight loss. 

But it was those fireworks in the 12th inning the Yankees provided with  the slim crowd remaining of the 43, 141 before the July 4th holiday. A division win they know was important.

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 2- Let’s recap this past session which came to an end on Friday June 26^th. 

There were several major items that had to be taken care of: Rent Regulations that had expires in mid June, The 421A Tax Abatement program, Mayoral Control of the NYC public school system, and some other legislation such as judicial reform, Mayor de Blasio's 3 MTA Board appointments (to be confirmed by the State Senate), and anything else that was not done due to the Dysfunction in the state legislature.

Taking rent regulations first, which was Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie's major item that he was concerned about, let's see how he did. Well rent regulations will be in effect for at least four more years, but the apartment vacancy decontrol level was raised from $2,500 to only $2,700, and not the $3,000 level that many NYC assembly members had wanted it to be increased to. New tenant protections, there were none announced other than the 2 mentioned in the previous sentence, so there must be no new tenant protection legislation that came from this past session. In his statement Senator Rivera states that he was deeply disappointed in the end result of this legislative session. Senator Rivera says that hardworking New Yorkers were used as political pawns, the failure to make significant changes in the rent regulation laws will result in the loss of almost 90,000 current rent regulated units, there was little effort to fix the broken 421A program, Charter and private schools have made out much better than the struggling (as Senator Rivera says, but failing as many of us still say) public schools, and that no criminal justice reform legislation was passed. If you go to the bottom of the blog posting there is a statement from Assemblyman Victor Pichardo which tell of how the rent regulations deal enhances tenant protection. So who is correct on the rent regulation issue, State Senator Gustavo Rivera or Assemblyman (and former chief of staff to Senator Rivera) Victor Pichardo.

Senator Rivera also fails to make mention of the State Senate request and approval with the State Assembly of a $1.3 Million property tax rebate for homeowners outside of New York City. So why were the homeowners of the Bronx, who need this tax rebate more than the millionaires living outside of New York City, left out? Perhaps Assembly Speaker Heastie can answer that question to the struggling homeowners in his assembly district, since I know he will not answer that question if I was to ask it of him, and to Mr. Mike Whyland Press Person to Assemblyman Heastie when will I get my interview of Assemblyman Heastie? We can do it here in this newspaper if you would like you already know some of my questions, and right now the answers are 'NO COMMENT” by Assemblyman Carl Heastie. Perhaps I should ask someone like Marcia Kramer of WCBS T.V. to take this over from me, after all she did some great reporting of former State Senator Pedro Espada Jr.

The new Marriott Hotel at the Hutch Metro Center officially opened last week, and there are photos on my blog of the event. This new Marriott hotel is owned by Simone Development, and is a franchise of Marriott International. It was 

said that a short distance from the hotel (about 250 feet) that the new Metro North Morris Park station will be built in a few short years, and that travel from this new Marriott Hotel to midtown Manhattan will take less than 30 minutes. It was said that the hotel is currently operating at near capacity since its unofficial opening on Mother’s Day.

Lastly, no one with any ties to Community Board 8 had anything to do with the decision of the Kingsbridge National Ice Center at the Kingsbridge Armory located just outside of Community Board 8 in the Kingsbridge Heights section of the Bronx. It seems odd to this columnist that Councilman Fernando Cabrera has chosen as his representatives to the KNIC Community Advisory Council three people from the Riverdale area of Community Board 8, including the former Vice-Chair of CB 8 Maria Khurry who lives in Riverdale. One would have to question that since Councilman Cabrera has chosen three people from CB 8 including its former Vice-Chair, why then did Councilman Cabrera not insist that Community Board 8 be a part of the KNIC process. It kind of makes you wonder what the priorities of Councilman Cabrera are. The Kingsbridge Armory lies entirely in Community Board 7, and Community Board 7 was the only community board involved in the KNIC process. Why now are people living in Community Board 8 being brought into the process, and why not current CB 8 members?

Fast food fools steal ATM

BRONX, NEW YORK, JULY 2- Smile geniuses. A pair of criminal masterminds were caught on tape stealing an ATM machine from a fast food restaurant.

At around 10:20 a.m. on June 30, two crooks broke into the Checkers Restaurant off the Grand Concourse. The restaurant's surveillance cameras recorded the masterminds as they rocked the ATM off its attachment to the floor. They then dragged it onto a waiting hand truck and wheeled it out the door.

The masters of disguise thought wearing a bucket cap and baseball cap would hide their identity. However, the crooks' faces can clearly be seen on the video.
