BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 7- The Yankees wasted no time in putting runs on the board against the Angels on Saturday night.
The first three batters in the first reached base and a sacrifice fly to center by Mark Teixeira knocked in the first Yankee run. A wild pitch by Angels’ starter Garrett Richards scored the next run. Two more runs crossed the plate on Brian
McCann’s 9th home run of the year. Carlos Beltran and Didi Gregorious, who both singled, scored on a single by Brett Gardner.
Richards, who gave up six runs, was removed after 0.2 innings. Yankee skipper Joe Girardi remarked, “We faced a really tough pitcher. We took advantage of some walks (3) and a fielder’s choice.’
Unlike the previous night, the six runs scored in the first frame were sufficient to give the Yanks their fifth straight victory.
The seventh Yankee run scored after three consecutive singles in the second.
The Yanks scored their final tally in the eighth as Teixeira drew a walk with the bases loaded and one out to tie the number of runs they scored in their most recent game. The second RBI was Teixeira’s 45th of the season, which leads the American League. He has driven in 13 runs in his last 10 games. Teixeira, who also singled in the second inning, has reached base safely in 22 of his last 23 games.
Yankee starting pitcher Adam Warren retired the first nine batters he faced. He didn’t fare as well in the second time through the Los Angeles lineup as five of the first seven batters reached base in their second trip to the plate.
The Angels scored their first run after Mike Joyce led off the fifth with a double. Los Angeles superstar Mike Trout led-off the following inning with his 15th homer of the year, third in the American League. He scored his 41st run, also third in the A.L. I fhe moves up to lead the league in runs scored he will become the first player to lead either league in runs scored for four consecutive seasons.
Those two runs were the only ones yielded by Warren in 6.2 innings, who earned his fourth win of the season. Girardi expressed pleasure with Warren’s performance, “he did a really good job in the early going. He’s pitching great in our rotation,. He’s made some adjustments. We always felt he could do both [start and relieve].”
