Motorman Who Ran After Crashing Train Struck by Hit-N-Run Driver
By David Greene BRONX, NEW YORK, JUNE 2- The driver who had been sought by the NYPD for running down a pedestrian along the Grand Concourse, has surrendered-- as his victim remains in serious but stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Police sources say Willesty Rosa, 26, of Pond Place, surrendered to police the following afternoon and has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The NYPD has impounded the vehicle as evidence.
Rosa was allegedly driving northbound on the Grand Concourse in the Burnside section when Robert Rey stepped off the center traffic island at East 182 Street. The 61 year old was run over and left for dead at 8:45 p.m., on Thursday, May 28.
Sources reported Rey suffered "multiple injuries" including "severe head trauma" and a broken left leg after being hit by the vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Police officials say Rey was walking across the busy roadway from east to west, when he was run over. Paramedics who removed Rey listed him as, "likely to die."
A camouflage baseball cap belonging to Rey remained in the roadway a good 20-feet from where a small pool of blood and discarded medical waste lie on the asphalt, the exact site where paramedics initially treated Rey.
Rey was the infamous subway motorman behind the controls of the doomed Number 4 Train that crashed at the Union Square station on August 28, 1991, that resulted in the deaths of five passengers and injured 200 others.
After the crash Rey fled the scene and later admitted to drinking alcohol before his shift. Rey was convicted the following year of manslaughter and served 10 years of a 15 year sentence.
Police officials could not immediately say if Rosa had any connection to the train crash.
According to statistics released by the NYPD, in the first five months of Vision Zero, 40 pedestrians have died, compared with 45 during the same time period in 2014-- when the speed limit was still 30 miles-per-hour.
