Cordero crowned MVP

BRONX, NEW YORK, August 27- You can't do better than opening the season with a title. The nationally- ranked #14 Monroe Mustangs women's volleyball team was crowned champion Saturday night in the Niagara CCC Thunderwolves tournament after going a perfect 5-0 to open their season, all in one grueling day. Leading the charge for the Mustangs was freshman outside hitter Tathianna Cordero who finished the day with 40 kills, three aces and five blocks and was named the tournament's “Most Valuable Player.”

“This was a great way for us to start the season,” said coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes. “All of our players contributed in different aspects of the game and they all came together as a team in order to win the tournament."

“Tathianna did a great job for us today,” said Coach Delgado Reyes. “But, we still have a lot of work to do to get to the level we expect in order to achieve our goals. Overall, though it was a great win for the team and it shows what we are capable of.”

Monroe began the tourney in a similar fashion as they did last year and produced the same result. In the first round of pool play (9:00am) the Mustangs defeated Onondaga CC 2-0(27-26, 25-12).  Stats for the game

Monroe then defeated both Lorraine CC 2-1(21-25, 25-18, 25-19)  -which proved to be their toughest opponent of the tourney- and District L rival Genesee 2-0(25-9,25-22) which positioned them as the number one seed in pool #1 and set up a semi-final round matchup against Nassau CC.

Behind Freshman RS Lydia Ortiz's nine kills (in twelve attempts) and Cordero's eleven digs and two blocks Monroe defeated Nassau in straight sets 2-0 (25-15, 25-14). Sophmore RS Eli Rojas also had a stellar game, she recorded five kills in five attempts. Last season Rojas lead the Mustangs in kills and hitting efficiency.

The Mustangs then faced rival Genesee CC once again in the championship game. Last year, Genesee ended Monroe's season when they defeated Monroe twice at the district tournament, becoming only the second team to hand the Mustangs a loss all year. However, this time around the Mustangs would not be denied. Monroe defeated Genesee 2-0(25-15,25-23)  and became tournament champions.

Tournament notes:
- Second year head coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes improved to 34-4 lifetime at Monroe College.
- For the first time ever Monroe volleyball has started the regular season 5-0
- Eleven freshmen made their debut for the Mustangs.

Mustangs Kick Off Football Season with Win

By RJ Troche

BRONX, NEW YORK, August 27- The first time Monroe Mustangs stepped on a football field against real opposition, they showed flashes of brillance in an overwhelming 46-7 win over an undermanned Valley Forge Military Academy team that had many prep school players and a short-handed roster. Regardless, Monroe will start their regular season next Sunday 9/2 on Staten Island against Wanger's JV team feeling good about themselves after their first preseason win.

"We started slow in the first half, but in the second half we saw more of the things we're capable of," said coach Terry Karg.  "We have more work to do to get where we want to be, but this was a good start."

Monroe marched down the field on their first possesion and crossed the goal line for the first time in their history, appropriately, when New Rochelle native Justin Johnson ran it in from six yards away giving Monroe a 6-0 early lead.

On Monroe's next possesion Johnson fumbled, opening the door for a Valley Forge touchdown, which turned out to be their only score of the day as Monroe took control from there. Monroe went into half time leading the Trojans by a score of 20-7 and piled it on, literally and figuratively.

Some highlights of the day:
Amar Williams was stellar. He scored two touchdowns, the first on a 54-yard punt return and the other on the ensuing Mustangs drive when he hauled in a 29-yard pass from quarterback Carlos Cortez (3-3 73 yards).

On the final Valley Forge drive of the day, safety Jordan Ford (Calhoun Falls, SC) intercepted a pass on the Mustangs own five-yard line and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown to seal Monroe's victory.

Genovese Family Member Convicted of 20-year-old Mob Hit

BRONX, NEW YORK, August 24- District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced that a 64-year-old New Jersey man with ties to organized crime is facing life imprisonment after being convicted of murder for his role in a “mob hit” that occurred in the Bronx 20 years ago.
Paul Gaccione, a.k.a. Doc, was found guilty on one count of murder in the second degree in the death of Angelo Sangiuolo, who was 32-years-old when he was shot to death on June 3, 1992. The jury found that Gaccione, of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, had acted-in-concert with others in causing Sangiuolo’s death.
State Supreme Court Justice Seth Marvin set sentencing for Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Part T27. The judge could impose a maximum term of up to 25 years to life in prison.
The jury heard testimony that Gaccione was the driver of a stolen van in which the deceased was a passenger when he was shot numerous times in the torso and head. Following the “hit” in the vicinity of Wilkinson and Westchester Avenues, Caccione drove the van into the parking lot of a nearby McDonald’s Restaurant at 1515 Williamsbridge Road and abandoned the stolen vehicle with the body in it.
During the trial, witnesses testified that the murder had been arranged by Angelo Prisco, a member of the Genovese Organized Crime Family and carried out at Prisco’s direction by John Leto, who shot Sangiuolo to death. The deceased was in the van with Gaccione and Leto under the pretense that Prisco had asked them to help Sangiuolo resolve some problem.
Both Prisco and Leto were prosecuted and convicted for their roles in this killing as well as other crimes, by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). The case against Gaccione was referred to the Bronx District Attorney for prosecution because federal authorities lacked jurisdiction under the RICO Statute. Gaccione could not be charged under the federal enterprise corruption law solely on the basis of his participation in the murder.
The case against Gaccione is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Robert Caliendo, of the Rackets Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Glucksman of the Investigations Division.
