Bronx Clergy Teaming Up with Joel Olstein to Feed the Children

By Michael Horowitz

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 28- The Bronx Clergy Task Force, spearheaded by Bishop Angelo Rosario, is teaming up with Rev. Joel Olstein, one of the nation's most widely known ministers, to support the nationwide Feed the Children initiative.

Ray Fraticelli, a chaplain who has been working with Bishop Rosario at the Church of God's Children, said the Clergy Task Force has, in recent months, been responsible for the delivery of much-needed food to impoverished families in the west Bronx and the delivery of food and toiletries to the Town and Country Shelter for Battered Women.

“One of the Clergy Task Force's main goals is to assure that children don't go to bed hungry,” Fraticelli stressed. “I get a tremendous sense of personal satisfaction by knowing that I am doing God's work.”

In recent months, the Bronx Clergy Coalition held a coat drive in which thousands of Bronxites received much-needed clothing during the winter months.

“We have pictures of people going into the coat drive with clothing that was barely in one piece and leaving with ski jackets and other winter coats to keep them warm,” Fraticelli stressed. We are not about glorifying ourselves; we're about meeting the real needs of real people.”

Bishop Rosario, for his part, pointed with pride to the fact that the Bronx Clergy Task Force played a key role in preventing the illegal eviction of the Futa Islamic Center from its mosque at Third Avenue and 166th Street.

Fraticelli said that he will be outside of the Einstein Loop Community Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday as part of the city-wide Pray New York initiative.

“We will be there to offer comfort to those who need it,” Fraticelli said. “We will be there to try to address the spiritual and physical needs of those who seek us out.”

Fraticelli noted that the Bronx Clergy Task Force has an ongoing coat-collection effort. Coats are kept at the Church of God's Children in the lower level of the Dreiser Loop Shopping Center.

In recent weeks, the Dress Barn store in Pelham Manor has donated coats to the Bronx Clergy Task Force for future coat drives and for the task force's upcoming Dress for Success initiative among those seeking employment or those seeking better jobs.

To donate coats or to assist the Clergy Task Force in other ways, call (718) 790-9120.

Stop laptop thieves by marking your items

Weekly Crime Prevention Tip

Mark it . . Register it . . Keep it!

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 27- Almost 1/3 of all laptop thefts occur during the course of a burglary. Once a thief is in your home, small portable electronic items are easily removed and often easily sold. Would you buy a second-hand laptop if it had an NYPD ID number engraved on it?

Engraving items makes it harder for criminals to dispose of valuables through dark-market channels, and may even deter theft. It can also help reunite you with your lost property.

The NYPD offers a free program – “Operation ID” - whereby a unique serial number is engraved on all portable valuable electronics and the owner’s information is registered with the Police Department. This program can be implemented by contacting your local Precinct's Crime Prevention Officer, or the Community Affairs Bureau direct at 646-610-5323

For more information on all of the programs we offer, or for additional crime prevention tips, please visit our website – www.nypdcommunityaffairs.org

100 PERCENT
By Robert Press

Closing Out The Week

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce held their Hispanic Heritage Leadership Luncheon last Wednesday, and Yankee Closer (this year) Rafael Soriano was to close the luncheon with a guest appearance. However due to the rain out of the game scheduled for Tuesday, the game was made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday thus making Soriano unavailable to attend the BCC luncheon. The appearance of Yankee closer Rafael Soriano was then rescheduled for Friday at St. Raymond's Catholic School in Parkchester.

In less than two days Mr. Lenny Caro President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce arranged to have sportscaster Duke Castiglione interview Yankee closer Rafael Soriano as Mr. Ray Negron translated for the Dominican Republic native Soriano on the stage in the school auditorium. The room was packed with children from the school, and after the interview the children were treated to another Yankee star, the Yankee mascot called “Bleacher Creature”. You can go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com for more on the Wednesday luncheon and Friday visit to St. Raymond's School by Yankee closer Rafael Soriano, and of course lots of photos.

What with primary day over the Bronx Democratic County Committee held their semi annual County Committee Call last Thursday to select officers and the Bronx County Leader. After a rather calm meeting (unlike in the past) the only real change was that Riverdalian Andrew Cohen was elected as one of the Vice-Chairs of the party to County Committee Chair Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (of Riverdale). By the way Assemblyman Carl Heastie was re-elected Democratic County Leader. You can go to my blog to see photos of this event.

The Castle Hill Community Fair took place this past Saturday, with help from State Senators Ruben Diaz Sr. and Jeff Klein along with soon to be Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda. Hundreds of people were in attendance, and while Senator Diaz was still recovering from knee surgery District Leader Julia Rodriguez stood in for Diaz Sr. During redistricting Senator Klein picked up a portion of the area and was out to meet some of his new constituents. Again you can go to my blog to see photos of this event, just check the archive section on the left.

Thursday October 11th will be the 5th Annual Liberty Democratic Association Awards Dinner to be held at Maestro's Caterers. Cocktails start at 6 p.m., with the dinner and reception starting at 7 p.m. For more information including the list of honorees you check my blog, or contact Mr. Joe McManus at 718-644-1841, or at Mcmanus638@aol.com to purchase tickets or a journal ad.

Looking back at our primary day predictions it appears that I may have missed on only one race that being the 78th A.D. where the turnout was the lowest of any Bronx A.D. I called it 81 – 19 for Luis Sepulveda in the 87th A.D. where the result was 77 – 23. In the 33rd State Senate race I called it 66 – 34 for Gustavo Rivera when the result was 70 – 30. In the Civil Court race I said that Eddie McShan would win 75 – 25 when the result was 60 – 40. Counting all the predictions I guess 9 out of 10 isn't bad, with the 87th A.D. and 33rd State Senate races within a 4 point margin of error. Now on to the Mayor's race, and City Council seats that will be open here in the Bronx.

If you have any comments about this column or would like to have an event listed or covered in this column or on my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com you can e-mail us at 100percentbronxnews@gmail.com or call718-644-4199 Mr. Robert Press.

Burglars Repeat Offenders at Storage Unit
(Surveillace video shows one of the burglars turning a camera to the side as to hide their faces. Unfortunately for him another camera captured his image.)

By Dan Gesslein

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 27- Cops are asking for the public’s help in trying to catch a group of burglars who struck the same Zerega storage facility twice in one month. The criminal masterminds are seen on surveillance video turning one of the cameras around as to not record them. However, the suspect failed to notice a second camera that was taping his exposed face as he disabled the other camera.

Police believe the same group struck the Public Storage Facility at 875 Brush Avenue twice in the same month. The first time was at around 10 p.m. on September 1 when two men wearing baseball caps burglarized the facility.

The crooks struck again at around 10 p.m. on September 22. They struck the same facility but this time they brought along another accomplice who was seen wearing a ski mask and a pony tail. Apparently this is the only member of the burglary ring who bothered to cover his face because police released surveillance video of the two men.

Anyone with information is urged to call CRIMESTOPPERS at (800) 577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

All calls are kept strictly confidential.

Little Leaguers Win Boro President’s Cup

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 26- Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the New York Yankees co-hosted the second annual “Borough President’s Cup” Little League Championship. The game featured a match-up between the Little League Raiders and the Bronx Bombers Little League, who competed for the title in a game at Yankee Stadium. The Little League Raiders won the game, for the second time, defeating the Bronx Bombers Little League 6-1.

To compete for the “Borough President’s Cup,” players for each Little League had to meet a set of requirements unrelated to their performance on the field. Those included a B-average in school, 90 percent or greater school attendance and a demonstrated commitment to community service.

Councilman Koppell's Replacement

Riverdale Report
By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 26- Before we get into the race in the 11th council district, we must say that last Saturday's “Movie Night” was canceled due to what was forecast as bad weather. While it rained at Yankee Stadium Saturday night no rain came further north. The next event by the planners will be the “Riverdale Festival of the Arts” to be held on October 14th at the Riverdale Neighborhood House located at West 256th Street And Mosholu Avenue with no time listed as of yet.

There will be a Town Hall Meeting to discuss “Quality of Life Improvements in Marble Hill”, hosted by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez on October 24th starting at 7 PM in St. Stephens United Methodist Church located at 146 West 228th Street in Marble Hill. Topics of discussion will include Neighborhood Security, NYCHA repairs, fire prevention, family activities, safe streets, and traffic safety, movement, and improvements.

Invited guests include State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Council members Fernando Cabrera and G. Oliver Koppell, New York City agencies that include the NYPD, NYFD, NYCHA, Department of Buildings, Sanitation, Transportation, Parks, HPD, and Community Board #8.

On to the City Council race to replace term limited Councilman G. Oliver Koppell in 2013. The race seems to be getting more defined as right now there is only one official defined candidate Mr. Cliff Stanton. I suspect that Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz who has been hemming and hawing about running will not be in the race, but will support the new Vice-Chair of the Bronx Democratic County Committee (of which Dinowitz is the Chairman) Mr. Andrew Cohen. Cohen is also the new Chair of the Aging Committee on Community Board #8.

Mr. Dan Padernacht also on Community Board #8 as Traffic and Transportation Chair who like Mr. Cohen is said to be also in the race for Councilman Koppell's seat should Assemblyman Dinowitz decide not to run. Padernacht was in the race to unseat 33rd State Senator Pedro Espada, and was convinced to withdraw from the race by state Democratic party leader Charlie King (and others) to support Gustavo Rivera who prevailed over Espada. Padernacht may have been promised favors for withdrawing, and when he tries to call them in may be told to go see Charlie King who no longer is state Democratic party leader. Then there are the one or two people who may become “Dark Horse” candidates in the race, myself included.

Lastly since I am being considered a Dark Horse candidate I was not surprised to see the Riverdale Press attack me on something I found wrong with Community Board #8's By-Laws. The last sentence of the story however was the teller, as it described a privileged conversation between CB 8 Chair Bob Fanuzzi and CB 8 board member Bob Press. I wonder which Bob broke this privileged conversation to the newspaper since it was not Bob Press.

Justice denied for home owners

Wakefield Area News
By Mary V. Lauro
BRONX, NEW YORK, September 26- Her voice trembled. She was choking back tears. "Not one penny. The judge said he owed me nothing. He hasn't paid rent for five months. That's $4,500. But she said he owes me nothing. How can that be?"
“Can you get rid of him? Is he being evicted?”
“Yes, but I have to give him about two weeks to clear-out. That's another month I won't be paid. How will I pay my mortgage, the fuel bills, real estate tax and my insurance?"
She was not the landlord of an apartment building with 20 or 30 units. It was a two-family house with one tenant and his wife. Like so many seniors in the community the rent supplemented her social security check. Without that rent, she was almost penniless. Her life savings had been sunk into a down payment for the house.
Unfortunate1y, the caller was only one of a growing number of two-family home owners who are facing what a generation ago was an isolated incident: the need to evict. What else can one do? These are not usual cases where the breadwinner loses his job, or a tragedy occurs or the tenant tries to make arrangement to pay back rent. Not at all. The perpetrators have an attitude of “Who is going to make me pay the rent?" The word has spread that it is next to impossible to collect unpaid rent beginning with the judges who have lost sight of justice.
Everything seems to be geared towards the tenant. The Attorney General's office issues a booklet on Tenants Rights directed at individuals who live in rent controlled apartment houses. There is nothing similar for landlords, or for that sub species of landlord, the owner of a two family house. The Borough President recently sponsored a forum on the rights of tenants with a star studded panel of experts. Very interesting, but there was nothing on tenant’s obligations or landlord's rights or the sad plight of a two family house.
It is true that the landlord of a two or three-family house can evict a tenant for reasons other than non payment of rent if there is no lease involved and the house is not rent controlled. It is called a "Holdover Case." However the process is long and even without a lawyer becomes costly mainly because the tenant usually does not pay rent during the process. Why would a landlord want to get rid of a tenant who does pay rent? The reasons are many: loud music, too much noise, use of drugs, bad attitudes, renting out part of the apartment, paying rent in a haphazard manner, refusing to recycle garbage, keeping an unclean apartment, etc.
The first step in a holdover case is to send via a process server a form letter notifying the tenant that he has 30 days to vacate before eviction process begins. If the tenant does not vacate the apartment, then the landlord goes to housing court for a date to see a judge. By this time the tenant owes at least two months rent, but as the devastated senior cried, it could be five months.
This whole process for the two and three-family home is so obviously in need of reassessment, one wonders why our elected officials do not pay it some attention. Non-payment of rent is a form of theft. It is a crime that goes unreported and it is, for the landlord, justice denied.

Not So Savvy Tech Crooks Caught on Camera

By Dan Gesslein

BRONX, NEW YORK, September 26- A pair of electronics thieves apparently were not so tech savvy as to prevent cops from recording their faces on surveillance video. Cops are looking for the crooks who ripped off a charter school of laptops.

At around 12:28 a.m. on September 5, a man and a woman broke into the Harriet Tubman Charter School in Morrisania. The pair made off with eight laptops valued in the thousands. Cops released surveillance video of the burglars inside the school in the hope that someone might recognize them. The video shows the pair casually walking through the empty school looking for items to take. At one point the female suspect looks directly up at the camera. It is unclear if she realized she was being video taped.

It is still unclear to investigators how the pair got into the locked school.
